My own take on the race is that Ruby Walsh’s vast experience and considerable ability was the crucial and deciding factor as he and young Sam Twiston-Davies went head to head to the line.
Zarkander won’t get near The New One next season.
What if its the same jockeys?
I’m not convinced either way. Battlers beat travellers at good odds consistently.
April 4, 2013 at 21:06 #435127For years, we’ve been mired in a trough of decidedly moderate hurdlers who take turns beating each other much like sprint handicappers, and it doesn’t look like changing any time soon.
Darlan, you are sorely missed
April 4, 2013 at 23:10 #435158TNO looks like being another horse who’ll need to work awful hard to get credit from some people.
Zarkandar probably ran to 170 or more today. TNO’s rated 155 – he made 2 mistakes and, arguably, he might have done better being held up a bit longer. Had he won a neck, I’d have thought he’d be fav with a few bookies for next year. 9s is a daft price, especially NR free bet.
I was the crazy man who said some months back he would win a Gold Cup or two and I stand by that. He didn’t fail for stamina today imo, and his chasing career could be 3 years away. As to his size, I’ve seen neither horse in the flesh, but I’d be surprised if he was much smaller than Bobs Worth.
Our Conor looks a great prospect, but there can be no doubt whatever now as to which has the best form between him and TNO.
Roll on next year
April 5, 2013 at 00:33 #435168Well done to Zarkandar – he showed how tough he is.
I think the two protagonists in the race will be going in different directions next season. TNO will have a live chance in the Champion Hurdle – maybe we should take his price now!
Zark must surely go for the World Hurdle as a previous poster mentioned – Nicholls said he wanted a trip.
Good race to watch.

April 5, 2013 at 08:49 #435191With so much depending on what the horses show next season, I think it would be insane to get involved in the ante-post market at this point.
Ante-post always carries dangers but looking at next year’s race, you have to think Old Father Time will have caught up with Hurricane Fly by then. My Tent Or Yours is a horse who has still to prove to me that he’s the real deal and if I owned Zarkandar I would be thinking about aiming him at the World Hurdle with the possibility that Big Bucks doesn’t come back or is not the horse he was (which has to happen one day) therefore leaving a prize, which, with all due respect to Solwhit, looks ripe for picking up. That leaves the young pretender Our Conor, who was as impressive as anything at Cheltenham, having a near bullet-proof look about him but what he beat remains to be seen and Rolling Star didn’t do much for the form in the opener today. The New One has had a good season despite two reversals that we could have done without and if he comes back in the winter, with some maturing behind him and a sharper attitude to his jumping, he should be nigh on certain to be a contender if the Champion Hurdle is the route they choose. He runs as if he will be as effective at the shorter trip, if not improving for it and he has come up the hill in front already, so has no concern there. At 9/1 with Bet Victor he seems to stand out as worth a go because I don’t think his odds will get any better unless a leg falls off during the summer.
Difficult to know what to do with Zarkandar. Probably lacks the tactical pace for the champion but im not so sure about him for th world hurdle either. I wouldnt fancy him to beat Solwhit (who for me has come back a very relaxed horse who now only does what he has to) Atfishers Cross or any of the other more specialist stayers. I think Zarkandar will be another Oscar Whisky

Really? I would suggest it is impossible to tell for sure and it just comes down to personal opinion. I would take the Triumph hurdle performance over The New One’s last two performances in falsely run races that should have suited him ideally. Without the change of jockey I would have fancied Our Conor to run all over The New One but with the woeful Danny Mullins on board it is now a totally different ball game.
I would agree that The New One shouldn’t have been beaten for lack of stamina yesterday so why was he beaten by a horse likely to step up in trip in a race that was set up beautifully for him?
If you seriously believe that The New One is going to win multiple Gold Cups then I suspect you will never be happy with other people’s assessment of the horse. Chances are he will never run in a Gold Cup let alone win one.

The New One was beaten by a better horse on the day. No excuses. He’s a better proposition than the winner for the Champion Hurdle, and cannot be ruled out of contention, but he does require some improvement.
The New One won’t be coming anywhere near to winning a Gold Cup.
Bob’s worth won the Albert Bartlett, then the RSA. It was never even thought to try him out in a Champion hurdle. Outside of size, Bob’s worth and The New One have nothing in common.
The form of this race is good, but not outstanding. Oscar Whisky/Grandoeut have patently run well below form.

Nigel Twiston-Davies said this after the race:-
"The horse has run a superb race. He’d won everywhere except the last 100 yards and dropping back to two miles will probably help him. The champion hurdlers ought to be worried next year."
That hardly sounds like he is talking about a horse with Gold Cup aspirations. I’d be surprised if he runs in the race and shocked if he wins it.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

I’ll stake 50p that his previous conqueror and effortless winner today At Fishers Cross is a better candidate for the race.

And I’ll stake £1 that neither will ever finish in the first three in a Gold Cup.
