Well done msercs on tipping CT who finally looks like fulfilling his potential
April 12, 2012 at 19:34 #400197Well I have Cape Tribulation and Dennis O’Reagan to thank for turning around fortunes on the first day. He can be frustrating but he is the equal of anyone on this type of ride. Had he pushed too much too early all chance would have gone.
The ground was much quicker than envisaged – will the rain arrive tomorrow?
You would think Aintree will suit Darlan. AP was very effective keeping things simple on a few of JP’s hurdlers at Fairyhouse and hopefully more of the same tomorrow.
The second race looks a leave alone with horses returning from poor runs and Champion Court running over further than ideal. If the rain stays away he may still be good enough – the second to Sir Des Champs is easily the best form on offer albeit at the wrong trip.
Finian’s Rainbow surprised me at Cheltenham but I thought Sizing Europe folded pretty tamely. Again if the rain stays away he might find it more difficult reeling in Albertas Run.
The Topham is just a bookmaker’s race.
Fingal Bay has the best form on offer but that was a long time ago and he has been less than impressive since and is returning from injury. He is being backed but I would be reluctant to take a short price. Cotton Mill looks the obvious alternative and both Harry Topper and Knock A Hand are worth considering if the rain arrives.
It’s A Gimme is being backed but he now looks plenty short enough for a horse who fell over the line last time. Hopefully Atttaglance will improve again under Harry Haynes.
Call Me A Star should go close in a relatively weak finale. This doesn’t look much stronger than the Sandown race.
Best of the day – pretty obvious but it is Darlan.
April 12, 2012 at 20:22 #400201I thought it was going to be a tough call deciding between Finian’s Rainbow and Albertas Run but when studying the form of the latter on the RP website you take a look at every race in the past 4-5 years that he has ran in that has soft anywhere in the description and then compare to those without and – given the recent watering announcement and current state – it was a no brainer.

April 12, 2012 at 20:42 #400205Day 2 Selections:
Un original but cant see Darlan being beaten in the first.
I am hoping to get back my losses from Cheltenham on Cotton Mill. Will teach me to count my each way winnings before the end of the race! O’Regan starting to get some rides from Ferguson now, could be a good combo.
The other horse to catch my eye is Saphir River in the 16.50. The booking of Paul Carberry very interesting.
Good luck all!
April 12, 2012 at 20:44 #400206Didn’t realise they were watering. I wouldn’t be too happy if I had a horse like Albertas Run and now faced the reality of watering and the possibilty of rain as well.
April 12, 2012 at 21:12 #400213Having won the big staying novice hurdle at Cheltenham, Lucinda Russell wheels out another decent performer in TAP NIGHT. This one won the Grade 2 Kelso Premier Hurdle in decent style from Captain Conan and should not be inconvenienced by the longer trip for the Sefton Hurdle here. There’s not much to split these on Official Ratings but this double US flat winner has come on in leaps and bounds recently.
Arlary houses another decent staying novice in Nuts N Bolts who suffered a minor setback after winning his first two novice hurdles. Another one worth keeping an eye out for when he appears again.
April 13, 2012 at 07:48 #400265Malcolm Jefferson you absolute star

Did the deed at Cheltenham and then again yesterday with the superb Cape Tribulation. Today I am chancing
April 13, 2012 at 11:43 #400306Nothing original in these selections but you can look too hard sometimes;
Darlan
Silviniaco Conti
Finian’s Rainbow
Fingal BayApril 13, 2012 at 16:45 #400365Malcolm Jefferson you absolute star

Absolute magic mate..great stuff!!!!!
April 13, 2012 at 20:00 #400387HGM: Cheers mate, the yard are a great bunch and Mr Jefferson deserves this luck. Fingers crossed for a good run from ATP tomorrow.
April 13, 2012 at 20:23 #21515Big thanks to the Jefferson team for ensuring that Aintree 2012 will end in profit whatever happens tomorrow.
If you don’t have the inclination to wade in at very short prices then the first two races don’t have much betting appeal. Perhaps Baby Shine might be good enough to chase home the favourite in the opener.
Marginal preference for Rock On Ruby in the Aintree Hurdle but at vitually 5/2 each of three quite happy to leave this one alone as well
I don’t know what happened to Brackloon High at Cheltenham. Strange doesn’t begin to sum up the performance. I think he looks well enough handicapped to put that behind him tomorrow.
Ballabriggs was the first National I can remember backing so no great confidence in following up. My four are Synchronised, Ballabriggs, Sunnyhillboy and Seabass. I don’t rate Katie Walsh at all but the other three still have chances and preference would be for Sunnyhillboy.
I think Kazlian should have won the Fred Winter and I would have fancied him for Thursday’s juvenile. Ridden with a little more restraint it will be disappointing if he can’t go close in this. Bit surprised to see the money for Constant Contact as I suspect he will struggle on softer ground.
Bumper looks much stronger than the mare’s equivalent. Minella Forfitness could easily be the best long-term prospect but pereference tomorrow is for Devon Drum who travelled very well on his debut at Newbury. Hopefully he can handle the softer ground.
Best of the day – Brackloon High
April 13, 2012 at 20:32 #400395I’m a bit disappointed in tomorrow’s Aintree card to be honest.
It’s only the National that really interests me from a betting perspective.
The other races have got quality but few runners and at short prices, so not my forte to be honest.
I was looking forward to a decent day’s betting – but it’s all on the National for me.
April 13, 2012 at 21:01 #400402Well done GDC on Attaglance today, kicking myself after backing Cape Tribulation yesterday, unfortunately I was sure Saphir River was the one. Still got each way so never mind.
Day three next and the big one – cant wait!
April 13, 2012 at 21:31 #400407Day Three Selections:
13.45 – Go All The Way good each way.
14.50 – Thousand Stars to go well again.
15.25 – Tullamore Dew (NAP) Cheekpieces first time and O’Regan to make the differance.
17.35 – Population to romp home with Mccoy up.Good luck all, enjoy the national, and best of luck to all runners and riders. My money is split between Killyglen, Giles Cross & Black Apalachi.
April 13, 2012 at 22:34 #400417Outside of the national Aintree is definitely a day for watching and bets are thin on the ground. John Ferguson’s Population with AP on board looks the only decent bet on the card and although he’s a very good horse so many of those involved could be anything. Chapoturgeon was an expensive loser for me at Cheltenham so I might have a look and the Hollinwell is a horse who I like to back to lay in running.
Simonsig look a good thing but at 1/2 and having been trained to the minute for Cheltenham I wouldn’t risk it at such skimpy odds.
Sprinter Sacre continues to scare everything off and if he’s not the new Arkle he’s doing a very good impression.
With Finian’s Rainbow looking even better over 2m4f than he is over 2 miles Sprinter Sacre looks more certain than ever to stay at 2 miles for the time being and the way things are going we could see the smallest field in the races history when he goes for the QMCC in March.
Hope he puts in an nice exhibition round and comes home safe then it’s all eyes on the National.
The ground looked like playing a big part in the National earlier in the week but according to the clerk of the course the ground is now Good.
Watching yesterdays Topham the one thing I thought was noticeable is horses weren’t getting much height at their fences, probably because the ground was a bit tacky and spruce was flying everywhere. Considering the state each fence was left in it’s amazing only 2 horses fell.
These fences may take a bit more humping but horses can get away with going through the top of them and that could be very important to Synchronised. All I have heard all week is IF HE JUMPS. His worst round of jumping came in the Gold Cup but he still won and as I said earlier that was down to the fast pace.
Watching Little Josh yesterday who simply couldn’t get going and get as far in front as he would have wanted to leads me to believe that this National may not be as fast as it can sometimes be and if that is the case Synchronised should have little trouble keeping tabs on them.
As long as AP gets him over the first few fences National or no National this is Synchronised race to lose. He is in a different class to any of these and the 9/1 is going to look very big come 4.30 this afternoon.
There;s been a lot of history been made recently and I am convinced Synchronised although he’s no Golden Miller can emulate the great horse and win the National in the same year as he won the Gold Cup.
April 13, 2012 at 23:08 #400427The ones I like tomorrow are Marufo and Battle Group, Oscar Whisky, Neptune Collonges (nap) and Dee Ee Williams.
I’ve done several for the National, so will be brassed off if none of them wins.
Also saved by the bell, thanks to Jefferson, Hurdy. I thought it incredible that Attaglance had broken a track record on good to soft, under 11.9 at MR. By 9 lengths. He must be some handicapper.
April 14, 2012 at 06:55 #400447Did you see Malcolm’s face after the race? he was totally shell shocked… couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy.
Would love to see him win the National and the way things are going who knows?
