Mr Wood states that it was depressing to watch someone ‘mindlessly throw chips onto a roulette table’. Why would it be any less depressing to watch someone mindlessly filling in random numbers on a Scoop 6 slip? Or backing every favourite or every McCoy horse or indeed any of the dozens of methods that the uninformed punter goes through in the belief that betting on racing is a short cut to a fortune.

Unless of course, his point is that we want as many of these people as possible swelling racing’s coffers in pursuit of easy money. A logical point, but rather a cynical one that undercuts his apparent concern for slot machine addicts.
Aranalde,

There’s no money for racing from the Scoop6 anyway. Out of the £2 stake from Agnes and others, £1.42 goes into the various prize pools and 40p goes to the bookmaker who takes the bet on his Tote terminal.

Hard to believe there’s much left of the remaining 18p after the Tote pay admin and marketing costs, including their contribution to the annual C4 bribe.

Thank you for that correction AP, and a fair point. In which case the cynical argument becomes that put forward earlier in this thread, that the more ‘mug’ money there is in the pool, the better it is for the informed professional.

I still don’t see that there is a great deal of difference in kind between putting money into a slot machine and marking random numbers on a Scoop 6 entry.

Never mind, Steve. Console yourself with the fact that your comments appear in Greg Wood’s article in today’s Guardian (together with a namecheck for this Forum).
Woo, hoo! I’m in the Guardian.

This actually counts as an "achievement" in my sad and pathetic life.

    (I’m not joking)

Who said you get nowhere in life by moaning?
