is whats said by vdw in some of his books i,v asked this question on here how do you rate the competitivenece or class of a race ,not the ability,vdw looks to rate everthing he must have rated races [as a whole]or he could,nt say[against not much] .would he add up the ability ratings and divide by horses ran or my hunch add up the consistancy ratings of the individual horses then divide by horses ran lowest best

VDW addresses exactly the issue you raise in the early part of chapter 5 of his booklet "Systematic Betting". There, he said that "most satisfactory [method] is to use the value of the prize to the winner (penalty value)."
