The shortest priced fav yesterday (or at least he was until the psychic layers pushed him out and the tramps clipped Tiddliwinks in) in the classiest race, broadcast on terrestrial TV, carried two pounds overweight.
Some might consider this pertinent, as much for the fact that David Evans had chosen to put up a jockey that couldn’t do the correct weight for a horse set to carry nine stone as anything else. Just about the only such jockey at Lingfield yesterday!
Was this communicated to stay at home punters? I could only find mention of it on racingpost’s live reporter feature. Maybe I missed it, but I didn’t hear anything on C4. The ATR website made no mention of it in it’s racecard (which usually include overweights) or subsequent results. When I checked last night the Press Association didn’t even have the overweight down in its results!
Surely the time for info on overweights, jockey changes etc to be put on one definitive website is long overdue. Punters were quite literally robbed yesterday.
January 10, 2010 at 14:08 #269121Didn’t hear anything about it and I’m a keen followed of Aeroplane.
That aside, even within the weight limit Aeroplane wouldn’t have won yesterday. It sadly wasn’t his day
January 10, 2010 at 14:11 #269122The overweight suggested it wasn’t going to be his day.
January 10, 2010 at 14:34 #269124To what extent or not does this overweight influence the Handicapper’s assessment of yesterday’s performance or will he not take that into consideration, please?

In hindsight maybe David Evans’ comments in the Post on Saturday stating that he was raring to go for Wolverhampton on Friday should’ve been taken into account?
The race he was entered for on Friday was a 5f race.
Not sure how the overweight suggested it wasn’t going to be his day though, Glenn? His form leading up to the race suggested he would be well up for the task but he ran nothing like his past form. I doubt 2lbs had anything to do with how poorly he ran.
January 10, 2010 at 18:05 #269160I remember having a letter published in The Sporting Life in 1985 asking that overweight be listed at declaration stage and that a horse be prevented from racing if a jockey could not be found to do the revised weight. Something like this existed in other countries then: I do not know if that is still the case.
In Aeroplane’s case, this might have necessitated a declaration of 9-03 just to be safe. Exceptions could be made when circumstances conspired against connections (e.g. only fully fledged lightweight jockey at track ends up in hospital).
Not much has changed in 25 years, other than that The Sporting Life has closed.
January 10, 2010 at 19:39 #269171Richard Evans (trainer’s son I presume) is due to ride Climate tomorrow and Aeroplane again on Friday; both for David Evans off 8 stone 12. Will be interesting to see if he makes the weight.

He’s done it before on horses such as I Confess.
I agree though, it’ll be interesting.
January 11, 2010 at 17:53 #269315It’s all in the BHA rules. Was it published on course or not noted by media?

Ten seconds before they jumped Aeroplane was 4.9. Five seconds before they jumped the right hand side of the screen had been punched through to make him 5.8.
