I thought this report from Fakenham deserved a wider audience, for it’s entertainment value as well as the level of detail. What a contrast to a few years back when it would simply have said ‘good to firm’.
Fakenham (Updated: 15:27, 16th Oct) Good to Firm
(GoingStick: 9.1 on Friday at 15:00)
Have been watering for last five weeks (30mm each week on both
courses). Will continue to water as necessary to maintain ground
as good to firm.
There has been very little rain all summer and autumn. 4mm of
rain this week. Dry weekend, perhaps 7 mm rain on Tuesday then
possible showers for remainder of week. Rain dances most welcome!
Fresh ground on both courses the whole way round. The last race
meeting at Fakenham was in May this year.
The ground is quicker than would expect for this time of year as
Norfolk has had very little rain – almost drought conditions –
consequently the grass cover is not as thick as normal. However,
by sufficient irrigation nature has been manipulated and a safe
racing surface has been achieved, albeit quicker than one would
want.October 18, 2009 at 18:46 #254104
At this time of year with the majority of NH courses resuming after a summer’s lay off reports on grass/soil condition, seasonal rainfall, weather forecasts for the week ahead and watering plans are valuableWe can all make guesses on the likely state of the tracks using our memories of the weather during the preceding months but some places have distinct micro-climates. Central Norfolk being a good example, it having the lowest average annual rainfall in the country.
Other courses take note
October 18, 2009 at 18:53 #254105A good, informative report. He’s owes it to us, the track has issued its fair share of fantasy going reports imo. One place where it regularly rides slower than it walks.
October 18, 2009 at 19:35 #254114David Hunter, the Fakenham C-o-C, might be described as a trifle eccentric, albeit very competent. This flowery going report has DH written all over it.
