Aiden O’Brien could do with a boost after some moderate efforts by some of his stable stars in recent weeks. In the opener at the Curragh this afternoon he saddles a colt who must have a chance of being special, being by Gallileo out of Ouija Board. Already in the betting for next years Derby, he will surely be sliced to prohibitive odds if he impresses over the 7F trip today.
This colt goes by the simple name Australia and many will be hoping he has got what it takes "Down Under"
Is it an omen that the same race was won last year by The United States?
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Ouija Board has three other offspring all in training with Ed Dunlop.
Voodoo Prince born 2008
Gelding
came 5th in a Windsor handicap yesterday.
Aegaeus born 2009
Gelding
came 6th in a Yarmouth Handicap on Friday.
Filia Regina born 2010 3 yr old Filly came 7th in a Doncaster class 5 maiden on Friday.
"Down Under" oh dear …
.June 30, 2013 at 13:31 #444464Well what can you say? He reared when the stalls opened and lost a good five lengths on the field. He joined in at the back, started to make some headway and ran on really well in the last furlong to be beaten only a neck in second. Time will tell what the form is worth but he was reasonably easy to back today, drifting out to evens and if he had started level with the field must surely have won. He’ll improve for time and the step up to a mile and is well worth keeping an eye on.
ps By "Down Under" I was referring to his
legs

June 30, 2013 at 13:36 #444465The jockey is so weak he couldn’t even get him out the stalls……

Encouraging debut and with his breeding you would expect more to come when stepping up in trip. Price for the Derby shorten after that, thought they would have kept it the same to be honest.
For Australia to win the Derby
He’ll have to run much faster
Joey in the plate it will be hard
But he has the trainer masterGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026

That is the racing public well up to speed then.

July 2, 2013 at 10:58 #444639There is a new colt called Down Under,
Talked up as the next great wonder,
But he stayed late in the stalls,
Better look out for his balls,
If he reproduces that blunder.
July 2, 2013 at 11:12 #444641Shame, you guys are too late for TRF poem competition.

Only just a little better out the stalls than last time but still dozy in them, Joey managed to recover very quickly and pushed him up with the pace. A cosy enough victory for a 3/10 shot, nothing spectacular in the performance. Aiden said afterwards he is very babyish but very talented and they will take their time with him.

Is that Australia or Joseph he was talking about?
I think Australia has a fair way to go to reach the top of the tree. 20/1 for The Derby is not tempting for me at all. I prefer the look of stable companion Indian Maharaja who hosed up on his debut before chucking Joseph off. He’s by Galileo out of Irish 1000 Guineas winner Again and having started out at a mile you would think he’s shaping like a stayer for next year. You couldn’t really say that was the case with Coventry winner War Command who is currently favourite for Epsom glory.

I’m guessing that he was talking about the horse Australia as I’ve never heard anyone say Joey is talented…..

September 9, 2013 at 15:55 #450703Aiden’s been at it again. This is what he has said about Australia today:
"Everyone probably knows we always thought he was the best horse we’ve ever had," O’Brien said.
"He lost three or four lengths in the stalls the first day and the next day he was very green.
"I don’t want to be blowing up the horse but he was always doing things no two-year-old has ever done before."
Yeah don’t go blowing him up now Aiden.
My God – how many "best horse I have ever trained" has he had?
"this perfect mix of poetry and destruction, this glory of rhythm, power and majesty: the undisputed champion of the world!!!"

If they really thought that, how did ‘the lads’ allow him to go off at 5/2 2nd favourite in a 4 horse race

he must havetorrets
September 9, 2013 at 20:51 #450733Aiden’s had more best horse’s trained than Joey’s had hot dinners.

September 9, 2013 at 21:08 #450737Surely they must realise that not every horse can be the best they’ve ever had?

Any horse breeder worth his salt will judge a stallion on what they did on the track, temperament, physical attributes etc. not what somebody said about them. Why the need for the Ballydoyle Bull?
Unless of course every year Ballydoyle actually do come up with a new and improved speedier, pacier animal
September 10, 2013 at 04:28 #450759And it comes on the back of DOW being proclaimed the toughest horse he has ever trained which he said a couple of days before withdrawing said horse because of the unsuitable Good ground.
"this perfect mix of poetry and destruction, this glory of rhythm, power and majesty: the undisputed champion of the world!!!"
