Mike’s post was very good, but it wasn’t all-encompassing.
Well he said everything I wanted to say and more, an in a more eloquent fashion than I’m capable of

Yes, he’s a very good and wise poster.
November 8, 2013 at 00:57 #457615BTW, where are all the guys on here who said that RW was a much better jockey than AP?
Do they still think so? I know that numbers don’t mean everything.
November 8, 2013 at 08:47 #457622Had to be like that, didn’t it ?
Towcester. 5 lengths down going to the last. Gets up on the line.
Nobody like him
Hopefully someone will upload a more compete video of the aftermatch because i’ve only seen the replay and it cuts off shortly after he’s won. Sounded like thousands there at the course.
There certainly were thousands there and the roar when he got up was Cheltenham like. You couldn’t get near the winners enclosure post race however it was nice that he came down to the winning post past the stands after winning, obviously to much appreciation from the crowd. Also a very nice gesture from JP McManus to stand the whole course a celebratory drink afterwards.

Numbers don’t mean everything but in 100 years time they will be saying Ruby Who? In the year 2113 the legends of the game will still be Richards, Piggott, McCoy and oh yeah and R Hughes.

November 8, 2013 at 10:23 #457629I think the only UK-based jockeys to exceed McCoy’s 4000 are Richards 4870, Eddery 4632 and Piggott 4493; all of whom were of course Flat jockeys and continued to ride until 50ish
I’m not entirely clear if any or all of the above figures (including McCoy’s) are solely British wins or total Career wins; but, whatever, Piggott’s total may be exceeded
Shall we grant AP a generous three years in which to do it?
November 8, 2013 at 11:25 #457632Had AP been enigmatic, and silent and secretive, a hermit bachelor in his big house on the hill in Lambourn, we’d be calling him the greatest genius who ever sat on a horse.
Only his ‘normality’ dignity and empathy make him seem a mere human being.
They broke the mould, right enough, when the unbreakable McCoy emerged from it.
November 8, 2013 at 16:23 #457660If only Mike had posted a pictorial guide with his post it would have top marks But with no pictures of his GN win or SPOTY etc. I’m afraid it’s marked down to 9/10 could do better
November 8, 2013 at 16:52 #457663Imagine the dedication one must have to have millions in the bank yet starve yourself every day to go to your work in a job where you risk life and limb on a daily basis. Plus he’s mostly out of the house before his young children are up and back when they’ve been tucked-up for the night quite a lot of the time as well. The guy doesn’t even feel the need to have a drink to unwind.
He’s some fella.
November 13, 2013 at 19:00 #458200What I love best about AP, apart from being a great guy, is that he’s not only a jockey, he’s a horseman. A brilliant one.
He doesn’t have to beat the c**p out of horses to get his winners. He just seems to know if there’s something left in the tank at the finish, and if it’s there he’s somehow able to bring it out. Horses just seem to want to do it for him.
And if it’s not there he doesn’t give it a hard time just to get in the frame. His will to win doesn’t override his horsemanship (unlike a certain very famous ex-flat jockey I could mention if I had an L and a P).
And he rides his share of the dodgy ones, due to owners/trainers thinking he’s a miracle worker. If the water’s no good you can’t turn it into wine! He chews his fair share of the turf! (Is that where the term "Come a cropper" comes from?
