*or theatre, gig, comedy show etc.
In an idea shamelessly plagiarised from Ian’s ‘Day at the Races’ thread (cheque is in the post, honest), I thought we could have one for any live events we may be attending in the same vein as the above. Opera being far too highbrow for an oik like me, it was simply a convenient title.
If you so wish, let us know what you’re doing and report back on how it went, would you recommend and of course the all important burning question facing mankind: how much was a pint of beer?
I will set the ball rolling with Frankie Boyle this evening. I believe there is a support act but I have no idea who. Not been out to anything like this in ages so looking forward to it.
March 25, 2023 at 09:33 #1641293What an absolutely splendid idea – two threads named after Marx Brothers movies from which of course Queen took the names for two of their albums.
While I still go racing, I haven’t actually attended a gig since Killing Joke at Shepherd’s Bush Empire in 1995 (Skunk Anansie supporting btw) unless the 80s gig after racing at Ascot’s Shergar Cup Day about ten years ago counts?
It featured my one-time future wife Clare Grogan of Altered Images, still exceedingly cute, the now sadly late Steve Strange of Visage, the somewhat disappointing Toyah Wilcox and the unbelievably brilliant Jimmy Somerville of Bronski Beat/The Communards, who frankly was in a league of his own and stole the Show by a distance.
But I’m looking forward to reading the reports – starting with tonight – and if I ever go out again I’ll be sure to let everyone know!

I only know Clare Grogan from early Red Dwarf. She was replaced as Kochanski in later episodes.
March 26, 2023 at 02:19 #1641488I’ve just had a night out with one Elaine Page at the Nine Elms Bingo club. I entered by the stairs on the left and came down those stairs deftly legs perfectly balanced, my Fedora slightly tipped forward at the right angle to look like Mr Mint, and a cheroot for company hanging rather delicately in the lip department… erm cool or not ?
“Hallo Elaine”
“Who are you ?”
“I might offend “
March 26, 2023 at 09:15 #1641505Well I enjoyed it. His act obviously isn’t for everyone but the vast majority seemed to be enjoying it too. I had heard a handful of the gags from his TV appearances but that’s to be expected. The warm up act was quite good, I wasn’t really clockwatching but he did about 15 minutes and Boyle himself about 70/75 so an hour and half for your £28.
They were very clear beforehand that there was no late admittance, no readmittance and no phones. Frankly I’d enshrine that in law, the way it should be. I hope it’s commonplace but I don’t go to enough of these things to know. It was nice to simply be able to concentrate on what was going on with only the sound of laughter and the occasional sense of people thinking to themselves ‘am I going to hell for laughing at that?’
Obviously the ‘no readmittance’ puts a lid on the drinkers which is presumably the main purpose, it was enough of a pain getting up to let people out during the interval (not that I was desperate enough to pay £4 for a 330ml bottle of Carlsberg
). Did have a nice pint of pale ale from Sweden of all places in the main theatre bar beforehand though at £6. Probably cheaper than in Sweden itself!March 26, 2023 at 09:24 #1641506Not my sort of thing, but really glad you had a good night, Richard.
“no late admittance, no readmittance and no phones.”
My favourite bit of the whole report.
In other words, “show consideration for those who have paid to see the act in peace and quiet.”
I can see this thread being another Lounge winner.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 26, 2023 at 12:53 #1641527It has its possibilities I suppose – someone buys a ticket for something top notch and they go there with fervour and high expectations and it turns out to be a complete and utter disaster and to add to their woe there’s a bus strike with limited travel and they miss the last bus home. There is no way of getting their ticket or travel money back. They are trying to heal their wounds and report back on here to sort of clear it from their system. What they won’t know is as we read their report a hopefully small proportion of us will laughing like drainpipes – or if we are more respectful of them – muffling it with a handkerchief – or running to a soundproofed music room at the back of the house and really letting rip in ‘relative’ secrecy. Our id will know of course. We are an odd bunch.

It really is that simple and I am pleased to say the vast majority behaved impeccably. There were one or two causing a bit of fuss but they were soon dealt with by a combination of security and a Scottish bloke with a microphone, which earned him a bit of applause. He took the time to thank the warm up act and venue staff at the end too, as anyone should.
July 16, 2023 at 21:49 #1655654It’s a sad commentary on the cultural state of the Lounge that this thread has gone untouched for so long.
I’ve yet to set foot inside my two nearest theatres and I’ve lived in the area for over 20 years.

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"July 17, 2023 at 08:32 #1655674Speaking for myself, I’m more likely to spend my time and money on attending sport to be honest. May well be that others are the same? Wouldn’t be a surprise given where we are.
If there’s a ‘Theatre Forum’ out there, they may have been nowhere near their local racecourse for 20 years. As I understand it, they would probably have a similar conversation bemoaning the fact that weekend shows at big theatres are being taken over by drunks and the organisers don’t care.
I have recently started going to the cinema on a semi-regular basis and I do wonder how the place survives. It’s a nice place with a reasonably good cafe/bar but the screenings rarely have more than a couple of dozen people in, and I go at evenings and weekends. From a personal point of view that’s great, plenty of room and little to no noise but it cannot be sustainable.
If, and it may not be, that’s an indicator for things like theatres and gigs (at the smaller end) then many of them must be in trouble. As with most other things I think those at the top end are fine and attendance remains healthy.

Another nail hit on the head with trademark unerring accuracy by Richard.
I only go out about once a month or two, if that, and it’s invariably to the races.
I did briefly consider the one-day Berkshire v Middlesex Sunday cricket match as its near me in Newbury – and FREE – but do I really want to sit through seven hours of that?
I think not.

Not much to report, but I did come out of my house and wondered why
there was a cue like an execution from the swimming pool/sports centre
right up the street and well round the corner. Turned out that The
Proclaimers were doing a stint at the Queens Hall in Dunoon. I wasn’t
about to join the end of the cue, I’d imagine by the time they got
round the tickets would be well gone. I like the Proclaimers, but
I wasn’t going to cue for 500 miles. ChortleDoes nearly getting out count.

Plenty of good golf but the undoubted highlight was saying hello to Rishi Persad and getting an hello back. I felt honoured.
