It looks like they may well be a u turn at some point on winter fuel allowance , if the higher than expected growth has meant an increase in tax brought in then surely they’ll take the opportunity , Starmer has had worse weeks
Pick 3 on Saturday champion 2025/2026
May 19, 2025 at 10:43 #1730870So sell out Starmer has caved in once again,I shall return to this later.
Yes the ONS announced the economy had grown in the first quarter of this year,,however much Starmer & Reeves may like to crow over it ask yourself why the wider question of rising unemployment, the dwindling number of job vacancies, rising prices and inflation dominated the talk surrounding the announcement. It’s always been said that decisions such as the inflation busting pay rises handed out last summer besides the huge budget tax increases takes 12-18 months to show through and this is before we consider the implications of Rayners rights bill.Having been handed above inflation pay rises, without agreeing any increased productivity, just last year the unions are already back demanding more and who wants to guess what they will be handed this time to placate them?
This of course all comes at the expense of the private sector who are expected to fund it.
I assume everybody has either seen or read of the chaos around Kim Leadbetter’s suicide pact of a bill very conveniently arranged to be debated when Starmer was out of the country. This flawed bill was ‘shut down’ after just a few hours by supporters with most of the amendments not voted on or the MP’s proposing them not allowed to speak.Surely this legislation must be properly scrutinised but it’s supporters only seem to be interested in rushing it through Parliament as quickly as possible.Another botched Starmer job who continues to hide behind others.
Then there’s the vexed question of illegal immigration about which this government continues to be totally ‘all at sea’.While in opposition Labour blamed the previous administration for people crossing the channel. Now with crossings at record numbers Labour home secretary Yvette Cooper blames the French shifting the responsibility once they are in office.
Finally I would like to address Starmer waving the white flag and surrendering to Brussels. For a man and a party unable to accept a democratic decision I suppose shouldn’t be surprised they are willing to sell out this country for their own selfish beliefs to a insidious self serving edifice such as the EU.Brussels is low growth, high unemployment & protectionist and in decline!
Why we should want to be following this rotting corpse into oblivion is beyond my understanding, why not go for free trade with the rest of the world making our own deals and rules instead of sucking up to this corrupt declining (OECD says the EU’s share of trade is going down and will continue to do so) monstrosity.
good luck to allMay 19, 2025 at 11:00 #1730871Notice how the msm are very quiet, as if protecting the PM and Labour, like they protect particular groups, the many layers of left working together hand in hand.
I’m sure if this was the other way round, msm would have ousted people by now.
The silence from them is quite deafening. And reading the other day the Royal Navy have developed a missile which can down supersonic missiles. The innovation in this country is astounding, and helped contribute to winning world wars.
But even with 26 miles of water to play with, successive governments can’t apparently stop the boats?
My feeling is if they really really wanted to stop the boats, they would.May 19, 2025 at 11:11 #1730873It seems that after next week’s “Match Of The Day”, the crisps salesman (to borrow a football analogy) will be leaving the BBC by mutual consent.
There was a growing sense of inevitability about it. After last week’s controversy, it was noticeable how no one in the BBC rushed to his defence. He was on his way out anyway, a rapidly diminishing asset who had exhausted any goodwill he had left in the corporation.
It was obvious his social media activity was damaging to the BBC but he didn’t seem to care. An arrogant narcissist who thought he was untouchable but has found out even the BBC has had enough of him.
The BBC is supposed to be impartial. It hands its critics a lot of ammunition when its highest paid employee doesn’t even make an attempt to be so and seems not to care about repeatedly causing damage.
If I was a journalist working for the BBC, I would be furious at Lineker’s conduct. He ought to have shown more responsibility and awareness but it was all about stoking his own ego instead. Eventually he pushed it too far and found out he didn’t have many friends in the corporation after all, especially after he criticised the incoming Head of Sport. A particularly stupid thing to do.
The BBC should be glad to see the back of him. It will save them paying a ridiculously large salary but it is a sign of seriously weak management when one employee thinks he is bigger than the business.

The silence from them is quite deafening. What on earth are you on about? There has been a barrage of negative coverage of Labour almost from the moment they were elected. No idea what news sources you’re looking at but the idea that ‘MSM’ is protecting Labour is complete drivel.

Grooming gangs. Probably one of the biggest scandals this country has ever seen and you’d think journalists would be investigating this one to the hilt, but only GB News is ‘on the case’. Why?
Complete drivel, tell that to the thousands of girls who have been raped. Shame on you!
May 19, 2025 at 12:41 #1730882GB ‘News’ is MSM, it’s been covered in many other MSM outlets as well. Take your ‘shame on you’ smears stick them somewhere dark and don’t make comments like that to me again.
May 19, 2025 at 12:55 #1730883It really takes a ‘superhuman’ effect to be crowned as chief nutter in this government. ….
and the prize goes to eco zealot Ed Miliband!
Perhaps no surprise but in his quest to ‘save us from tyrants’ he seems to handed China the power to switch off all those lovely green solar panels he so loves boasting about.
good luck to allMay 19, 2025 at 14:08 #1730889Don’t quite understand why Brexit was all about the fishermen. Then Brexit was achieved and no one seemed to mention or even think about how they were getting on. And now it’s all about our fishermen again. Can anyone remind me what percentage of our GDP is based on fishing? Is it 0.05% or something? Or possibly even less.

But why is it only GB News taking this further? The ‘left’ msm seems to have swept one of the biggest ever scandals in this country under the carpet! As journalist’s who could possibly expose and bring so many to justice, they went very cold pretty quickly on this one.
What do they know they don’t want to expose perhaps?May 19, 2025 at 17:35 #1730896Can anyone remind me what percentage of our GDP is based on fishing? Is it 0.05% or something? Or possibly even less.
It’s around 0.03%, with gross revenue of around £860 Million, which is around just 6% of the total generated by the whole of the Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing sector
So pretty small beer, which certainly doesn’t justify the acres of coverage it receives. It’s a ‘visible’ industry and therefore easy to home in on, unlike the myriad ‘invisible’ small/medium businesses which combined generate far more GDP
Furthermore, like the farmers, the comfortable majority of those involved in fishing were keen brexiteers so I for one won’t be losing any sleep if this latest agreement with the EU has ‘sold them down the river’, which is debatable anyway
May 19, 2025 at 18:46 #1730897So is all this forget about the farmers and fisherman (wreck their families and their living) a revenge mission for the people voting for Brexit?
As I have said politics not my bag but it all smells a bit fishy
May 19, 2025 at 18:58 #1730898The people who voted for Brexit are no better off for it. And the people who didn’t vote for it are no better off. I resent the fact that those who did vote for it are now complaining about a trade deal that might just make us all better off. I think they’re the ones being spiteful if that is the case.
May 19, 2025 at 19:26 #1730901Will it make the farmers, fishermen construction workers (who get undercut by migrant influx ) better off?
Only asking as i live in a rural community and one of my son’s who work in construction dont feel better off.
Maybe its just me thinking the worse as i see what my Father (and his mates in RAF)fought for going down the drain. Or am I plain wrong that we are much better off with all this diversity. I mean look where i came from (Canning Town) how much it has done for us cockney’s
Now thats genocide
May 19, 2025 at 19:29 #1730902nwalton, what did your grandfather think of diversity in the armed forces? Was he against all the Gurkhas and other soldiers from across the empire who fought alongside us?
May 19, 2025 at 19:48 #1730903My father loved them mate they did not try to change cour culture or the way we live .iIf my if my dad came back now doubt he would reconise the place
Try (maybe you do) living in Canning Town area and see what it has become to what it was. Why do you think the cockney is no more and many moved out. But each to their own way of thinking/livingMay 19, 2025 at 20:07 #1730904Only just heard about this….
The UK government is investing £360 million in a new Fishing and Coastal Growth Fund to support the UK fishing industry. This investment will focus on modernizing the fishing fleet, improving workforce skills, and revitalizing coastal communities to boost tourism, according to the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. The fund is part of a wider agreement with the EU that grants the UK access to more fishing opportunities and allows European trawlers to fish in UK waters for a further 12 years.
