The Labour Left views Venezuela as a model country and beyond criticism

That was certainly the case when Hugo Chavez was president but I find it hard to believe that even the most blinkered members of the Far Left remain in thrall to, or are apologists for, the Maduro regime. Just an embarrassed silence more like.

A dictator is a dictator whether ostensibly left wing or right wing, and the societies they preside over suffer in much the same manner.

Our generally hot-headed and piss-poor news media have been banging-on about Maduro’s removal being ‘unprecedented’: hardly, 36 years ago (to the day) Manuel Noriega, president of Panama, was captured and removed to the US, and charged with – amongst others – drug trafficking

That’s a production id like to have seen on stage , Frost was very influential on 70s/early 80s tv”.

It was great. In fact, I saw it twice. Once in the Donmar and again when it transferred out into the official West End.

I was lucky to get a ticket at the Donmar. It is only a small theatre and the play was the hottest ticket in town. I went along when the afternoon matinee was due and asked if there had been any returns. I was advised one had just come in but for a restricted view seat. I figured that was better than nothing, so I bought it. As it happened, it wasn’t a particularly restricted view. At least 90% of the stage could be seen, so I wasn’t disappointed.

It was a first class production. Michael Sheen and Frank Langella were both superb. The film version was good but I think it worked better in the theatre.

Drone removing a corrupt dictator is never a bad thing however the US under Trump are doing this without involving or advising there allies , we are now in a situation where Trump says the US will now govern Venezuela …. how long before the oil starts flowing

Sheen is a very talented man , to play Clough Frost and Williams , 3 completely different characters so well is a testament to that

I only remembered recently that I saw Sheen play Mozart in production of “Amadeus” at the Old Vic in the late 1990s. David Suchet played Salieri.

Sky Atlantic’s current reboot of “Amadeus” prompted me to dig out the programme. Sheen must have been very young.

It was a good production but the story is a load of tosh. There is no evidence Salieri killed Mozart or that he even disliked him.

Aside from being somewhat prickly about her status, Beth Rigby is also a huge hypocrite. She was at the forefront of Sky News’s hysterical broadcasts about Covid and demanding that everyone follow the cobbled together guidance – but she obviously thought it didn’t apply to herself.

She was caught out openly breaking the guidelines and was suspended for six months. Something she ought to be reminded about.

Not much sign of social distancing going on here, which shows the political and media classes knew the rules they were demanding everyone else should follow were unscientific nonsense. Would Rigby and Burley really have behaved in this manner and put themselves and their families at risk if they seriously believed the propaganda they were pumping out every day?

I’d forgotten that she was suspended as well.

    Or that they were hypocrites.

Some of their social media accounts suggest otherwise. They support any dictatorship, as long as it is anti-American.

They don’t seem to have much to say about current events in Iran either.

Further evidence, if it were needed, that wholly ignoring antisocial media is one of the better choices I’ve made.

There might be a statement in the Commons today regarding Venezuela and it will be interesting to see if the likes of Burgon, Lewis and Corbyn will mouth-off.

It would also be good to see a statement on Iran as events there are potentially monumental, but have been -if not ignored – then rather downplayed by the media and politicians thus far. Better revolution from within than forced regime change from without, surely.

Once again the economic illiterate left need reminding that the stock market is not the same as the economy. The FT 100 is simply the 100 largest capitalised companies registered on the exchange. Their involvement and the amount of business they do here is dwarfed by their international business interests.
Isn’t BOOASTING about the stock market something Trump would be likely to do?
Earlier one poster asked for more interaction between government and the media ie questions and answers. This is unlikely to happen if Starmer’s aide carry’s out the threatened reduction in daily briefings making them sound and be even more aloof from the public.
Someone else asked why people don’t trust Starmer?
Try the simple fact they can’t trust a single word he says (even cabinet ministers have said this) or policy announced will be carried through, just look at the ‘briefings’ in the run up to the budget. There was so much ‘kite flying’ not even her own cabinet colleagues knew what was going on.
Things are announced then back tracked on resulting in confusion and distrust.
Air strikes on Syria ……. last year Starmer was gushing over the new regime.
    Finally a comment on Venezuela.
Has this been thought through by ANYBODY in the US administration as to what happens next?
How will the people react to being ‘run’ by US interests?
It has all the hallmarks of the Bush/Blair invasion of Iraq and we have all seen where that’s led …. ISIS etc.
    good luck to all

Economically illiterate , a strong stock market in the UK helps the UK kid …no ?…. it’s helped me make money , money I can spend or invest again , if your right wing should you not understand that , I never send it was THE economy , the economy was what Truss destroyed in a few weeks a couple of years ago , same economy Labour are fixing….

Nobody said the economy and the stock market are the same thing but you can bet we’d have heard all about it from the right wing press if the same thing happened under the Tories. It must be exhausting to see a negative in everything.

Mea culpa Corbyn was on Newsnight and refused to admit that the last election in Venezuela was rigged. There really are none so blind as those who cannot see

HDLG … your posting implied a strong economy because of the stock market.
I too invest in the stock market have done for nearly forty years now.
Ask Reeves about being negative after all she INVENTED not one but two ‘black holes’ before each of her budgets.
The OBR couldn’t find the first and explicitly told her the second didn’t exist, but did that stop her?
She lied to to the public about the reasons for tax rises and turned it into a benefits street giveaway.
Read the other day a article about her curtailing the OBR in future to stop it passing comment.
    good luck to all
