We all have our ideas of what will win the Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle etc but the truth is we are very seldom right. Every so often we get a big outsider walking away with the Gold Medal and we stand scratching our heads wondering what went wrong.
I have one horse who I think could shock everyone and win at a big price.
Some things don’t hit you when you first see them.
I have called Afsoun all sorts of names and even said he was a proffesional loser. Most of us wouldn’t have him on our minds for the race………..but then who bcked Kirriemuit Hardy Eustace or Beech Road when they were thought to have no chance?
I think if there is to be a shock, he is the one horse, not expected to, but could win the Champion Hurdle. If you watch him in the race last year going to the last he was bang there with every chance. When he jumped it he landed very flat but going to the line he was finishing stronger than Sublimity and not beaten far at all.
Take into consideration he went into the race last year after beeing beaten by Straw Bear but this year he is going into it with a victory over Straw bear and it could be the horse is better this year than he was last year.
If Sublimity is truly a champion Hurdle horse then stritly on form and considering the aforementioned he could in fact reverse placing with him.
At 25/1 I think he’s worth a speculative EW bet and as I have already got a great price on the fav I have no problems in throwing caution to the wind and betting the horse. The final thing that swings me is Nicky Henderson is no mug and the horse was supposed to go chasing this year. He must fancy him a bit to have kept him hurdling.
Has anyone else got a horse they think could spring a surprise at the Festival?
February 13, 2008 at 11:07 #142734Elusive Dream in the Ballymore Properties Hurdle is a horse I really like a lot, and Findlay has been extremely bullish about him. Again, he could end up being another Sam Thomas mount if Ruby decides to ride Breedsbreeze or The Tother One.
I was quite suprised that they have continued with the horse over hurdles and not fences.
I saw the horse when he first when jumping over fences, at Market Rasen, and he ran out an easy winner and looked a really good jumper.
February 13, 2008 at 11:20 #142740Hi all (first time posting)
Ladbrokes World Hurdle and Special Envoy, have taken 25/1 (20’s now best i think) – finished just 4L behind ID and well clear of third, on that evidence is open to improvement, ran in a tactically inept race behind Lough Derg NTO but i think that should be forgotten, too big a price imo and one i think will shorten considerably as the race draws closer, however i am taking on trust the Bowen yard has/will recover from the coughing outbreak.
Also throw up Serabad same stable in the Triumph at 25/1, beaten both times hands down by the jolly but a place is definitly within this ones scope and a good run on Saturday will see this one a lot shorter on Sunday!

Thank you GWDS – I am here to learn!
February 13, 2008 at 12:48 #142771Sky’s The Limit interests me a lot. He was a dark horse last year. Also, Perce Rock, Kasbah Bliss, Gold Medallist (he’ll be fresh again), Lounaos and Farmer Brown. And maybe even Fred’s Benefit, if he wins today.
Carruthers dam is a half -sister to Destriero of happy memory, no less, and has obviously inherited a lot of talent.

February 13, 2008 at 14:54 #142813In the Supreme Novices really fancy Salford City i know friend of the connections and he reckons if the ground is good should be there or there abouts and at 33/1 deffo worth an e/w…….
French Accordian in the Arkle is another who needs the good ground but looked very good at start of season 20/1 another worth an e/w…..
I still think Sizing Europe will win CH but Blythe Knight if the ground again is good might be some e/w value along with Afsoun

Went around David Elsworths on one of his open days. The horse is a magnficent looking brute. However brute is the word. The stable lad told us to watch out cause he bites. I thought he meant if we put our hands up to him so I kept at what I thought was a safe distance. The horse put his head out the door, strained his neck, skewing it to one side and bit my shoulder. Painful, the bruise was there for a month.
I know there will be plenty on here that will like the horse even more now.

February 13, 2008 at 16:17 #142836How about Cedris Libani for the arkle, unbeaten over fences. Good e/w chance in a weak division.
February 13, 2008 at 16:55 #142850We’re now in a spell of dry, settled weather that, as far as Cheltenham goes, currently shows little sign of breaking down until well into next week at the earliest. Given that any deficit in rainfall may be made up somewhere down the line, what price soft ground for the Festival this year? Under the present circumstances, perhaps 1 or 2 performers with a preference for cut could provide a valuable insurance policy.
February 13, 2008 at 17:26 #142861Won In The Dark – Triumph Hurdle e/w @ 20-1
This horse has impressed me twice this season already, In his last two runs and think he looks a proper horse. The key to him is a decent clip and in races that haven’t suited, he has acquitted himself really well to suggest that he is a very nice horse and showed very good battling qualities to run personal column close today in a race that suited personal column. The more I watch the triumph market unfold the more I think the pace will be a good one and Im sure this horse will be at least placed at cheltenham.
This horse has looked to have physically improved leaps and bounds since beaten 8lengths by franchoek at start of the season, and i think it was only that defeat that puts people off him. Think this horse could be up to beating the lot and is well over priced for being one of the major contenders for the race
