What on earth was he doing? Strange Ride!
i didn’t have any money on the race
February 9, 2013 at 16:05 #428988not all the blame should be on lynch with this one. if that was another horse like bobs worth or something, it would have gone past SDC at the finish. flemenstar lacks a burst of speed in his races. he is a good cruiser and jumper, but is one paced when push comes to shove.
February 9, 2013 at 16:22 #428994Suggestion was that he was riding to orders to cover up the horse until the last minute. I don’t think he did anything wrong the horse doesn’t appear to stay 3 miles and would love to see him take on Sprinter Sacre in the Queen Mother
February 9, 2013 at 16:40 #428995Didn’t think there was anything wrong with his ride, horse doesn’t quite get 3m and Sir Des Champs ran better than in the Lexus. Think they should change their mind about the Ryanair and send him there.
February 9, 2013 at 16:55 #428998Flemenstar looks a bit ‘soft’ to me. Might be something physical, maybe breathing given his head carriage, though I’m told that’s sometimes a genetic trait from his sire. I’m always reluctant to question a horse’s character or resolve, but, whatever the reason, he didn’t look, to me, to put it all in. Reviewing the Lexus he didn’t battle very hard there either, albeit that too was over 3 miles.
February 9, 2013 at 17:04 #429002Obviously doesn’t quite get 3 miles in top company. Ryanair seems the obvious call, allow him to stride out. AL riding to orders and seemed to do a good job, settled the horse very well. 2-mile champion a possible, can’t see him beating the might SS, but that would be a spectacle.
February 9, 2013 at 17:15 #429006The jockey isn’t good enough to carry out the orders to best effect, should have put Paul Carberry on him.
February 9, 2013 at 17:35 #429009Flemenstar, as I suggested a few weeks ago, doesn’t stay a strongly run 3 miles.
Had Sir Des Champs jumped more fluently in the Lexus, then he would have finished in front of the Casey horse that day also.

February 9, 2013 at 17:59 #429014The jockey isn’t good enough to carry out the orders to best effect, should have put Paul Carberry on him.
Imagine the abuse flying around if Carberry had been on it
‘The posing ******’ and the like surely would have been uttered. In fairness i think Lynch did all he could,if he had gone on earlier(like in the lexus)and stopped he would’ve got slated,he tried keep a bit of horse up his sleeve but it just wasn’t there or perhaps Flem wasn’t willing to give it as others have mentioned.
February 9, 2013 at 18:53 #429020Just watched the race again, I saw nothing wrong with the Lynch ride (assuming he was riding to orders). After the 3rd last he moved alongside the winner, jumped the 2nd last well but slightly lost his backend on landing, unbalancing him (Lynch, not unlike AP on Binocular used his left rein to help get the horse back on an even keel: some say he took a pull, he didn’t) and he was racing from that point on, being pushed along to stay with the winner. Either he simply wasn’t good enough today, or he doesn’t care for pressure.
I very much doubt it was lack of stamina that failed him – the race was run comparatively slowly for a Grade 1. The Hunters Chase winner carried 1lb more than SDC and ran within 5 seconds of his time.
February 9, 2013 at 19:19 #429023He doesn’t stay 3 miles, and definitely wouldn’t stay 3+ miles round Cheltenham in the Gold Cup.
Today they tried different tactics, to try and get him round, but still didn’t last home. Sir Des Champs is a very tough horse though and will surely be in the mix up at the finish come March.
Nothing wrong with the ride on Flemenstar at all.
Flemenstar should be in the CC or the Ryanair.
February 9, 2013 at 20:43 #429025think its a bit harsh to say he dosnt stay 3 miles when he was only just beaten in 2 grade 1s over the distance it would be fair to say that he is probably better over shorter where he can take it up futher from home and gallop them into submission but i dont think he didnt stay today he ran all the way to the line its not like he was going up and down on the spot or wandering all over the place sir des champs is a top class horse and he jumped alot better today and he will be bang there come the gold cup
February 9, 2013 at 22:05 #429028I don’t this non-staying stuff either.
Sir Des Champs is very well thought of and he’s beat Flemenstar 1.75 lengths all out.
To me, a non-stayer stops like he’s hit a brick wall and ends up tailed off.
February 9, 2013 at 23:44 #429031Non-stayer is a relative term; at the top level he doesn’t quite get home. Maybe next year, if he settles better in front, but I doubt it.
February 10, 2013 at 00:46 #429036I think his chief weapon, as has often been said, and was mentioned again today on ATR, is jumping. He has the ability to gain lengths at fences and coupled with his high cruising speed probably deserves one last chance with a positive ride from the front to see if he can put the race to bed before the home turn.
I remember Florida Pearl, a suspect stayer himself at Cheltenham, when given a very positive ride by Adrian Maguire had his finest hour in the King George.
As Peter Casey has already suggested on Twitter that the QM is now the target, one would hope that a decent ground King George may one day become a realistic mid-season target.
I would very much doubt he would get hope in a Gold cup however, whatever the ground. He just about stays 3m.
February 10, 2013 at 00:50 #429037In my opinion , absolutely nothing wrong with the ride. He was trying to make sure that he stayed.
There is no chance of him staying the trip in a truly run Gold Cup.
Examine other options and move on re Cheltenaham.February 10, 2013 at 00:55 #429038It always seems odd to me that when a horse has an asset, he is not given the opportunity to take advantage of it. Having seen the waiting tactics employed, I actually expected Sir Des Champs to win more readily than he did. I still do not think he looks as good as he did last season and I don’t fancy him for The Gold Cup, where he will face better stayers than Flemenstar.
Flemenstar was able to take close enough order to pick the winner up but the necessary acceleration was not forthcoming. I would be very wary about him and the form of this race in general, particulary after seeing them both passed on the run-in last time out by Tidal Bay, who looked well out of it before coming with a withering run to overtake tired rivals.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
