6.00 Curragh, Mdn, €20,000, 2yo
MAN OF IRON (Giant’s Causeway) debuts for owners Derrick Smith,
Susan Magnier and Michael Tabor, and represents trainer Aidan
O’Brien, who turned out Brian Boru (GB), Horatio Nelson (Ire) and Duke
of Marmalade (Ire) to win this contest in recent years. The half-brother to
GI Belmont S. winners Jazil and Rags to Riches faces an intriguing cast which includes Popspeed (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}), who is a halfbrother to GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff victress Escena.

9.00 Curragh, Mdn, €16,000, 3yo/up
SLANEY WAVE (IRE) (Galileo {Ire) makes a belated debut in this lowkeyaffair. He is a full-brother to Europe’s 2006 champion juvenile,
Teofilo (Ire), and, like that sibling, represents the Co. Carlow team of
Jackie and Jim Bolger.

AOBs first string RIP VAN WINKLE certainly interests me as it looks like O’brien is having a crack with a speedier son of Galileo (out of a stravinsky mare), usually a lot of his galileos are from more staying mares.

Another who I find interesting at a much better price is IRON DUKE 33-1, have been waiting on Refuse to bend’s first crop and think he could do well at stud, he’s had a few decent enough ones so far but now the 7f races are more where I expect him to have a few winners. Hard to know how well he has been covered though. 2004 (the year he retired to stud) was a good year for godolphin.

Definitely a very interesting maiden. AOB always runs something he regards highly.

Last year’s winner Lisvale has only had a Listed win since, but both Alessandro Volta and Curtain Call made their debuts in this race.

Be interesting to see what more AOB can shake out of Rip Van Winkle this season, perhaps he is taking a leaf out of jim bolgers book and is trying to train one for speed.
