Remember it so well as a teenager. Crazy drought was still on, the dubious Lasse Viren returned to form of four years previous by winning both the 5,000m and 10,000m at the Olympics, Mr Bigmore won the Goodwood Cup, Wollow the Sussex, Sea Anchor the Stayer’s handicap in the Hollingsworth colours, and Noel Murless’s last top class animal, J O Tobin won the Richmond. Fast forward to today, joke Olympics, Goodwood decimated by non runners, and some daft, hyped up team nonsense starting up tonight. May look in on the first race then put one of my box sets on, something like The Protectors, The Persuaders, The Champions or The Saint. Even they somehow seem more credible.
