I hope Mick Channon gives Bass a good kick up the backside for that ride on Whistle down

He was sitting on a double handful but left it way too long to get off the bridle and got beat

    Terrible judgement

I don’t usually like threads like this as it’s easy to fall into the pocket-talking trap in this game, but I really do think you’re entitled to feel hard done by there.

He simply doesn’t give his mount enough time to pick up and go and win the race.

If they met again at the same weights, trip, distance etc – the runner up has to be favourite.

Was it worse than Dobbs on Classic at Goodwood?

I wondered if Whistledown’s jockey was unsighted and did not see Blue Collar Lad until it was too late.

Looked pretty awful watching the replay

All I would say is that this horse has now finished 2nd or 3rd 9 times in 21 races and must be a bit of a dodgepot that needs to be dropped on the line

If you watch her last win she travelled like a rolls Royce into the race kicked a length clear at the furlong pole then pulled herself up and almost got beat

But as a punter you’d much rather the jockey went earlier and got beaten into 2nd when the horse pulls itself up having hit the front too soon than what he actually did as you then just feel robbed

One of several reasons I avoid low grade races like the plague

I’m sure being unsighted was not the problem, he definitely could see what was ahead

Really don’t know why he didn’t push the button a furlong out, it wasn’t until the final half furlong when he let the horse go

Sorry if you think I’m going on about this but it let me down for a very nice lucky 15

    Ah well

The question is: would you put the combo in such a bet again?

We can’t change the incompetence and ungenuine nature of certain jockeys and horses but we can look at our own betting strategy and avoid them in future.

I always blame myself for betting on something unreliable rather than blaming what I bet on for being unreliable.

Blaming someone else is futile – they won’t change – but if I blame myself I can learn lessons, adapt and become a better punter.

Sorry it let down your Lucky 15.

Just watched the race and agree with FF. She looks like a classic dodgepot.

Maybe I might have a different view if I’d had a bet but it looked to me like she had plenty of time to get her head in front but she did not want to. In the last few yards, she is not really making much more progress and it did not look like she was in front just after the line either.

I would not be surprised to see some headgear on her next time.

Think it’s the jockey who needs headgear CAS, it was a poor ride on a horse that should have won.
He never give the horse a chance of winning the race because he left it too late. That was the consensus on Racing TV and the stewards did have a enquiry regarding it. He made a right pigs ear of it, probably due to overconfidence.

Did Bass receive any sort of penalty from the stewards?

Brave of Racing TV’s pundits to call out what they think is a poor ride by an apprentice.

It would be good to hear them call out poor rides by more experienced jockeys but they seldom if ever do.

I’m not terribly interested in what anyone on RacingTV – or any other area of the media – thinks, but as previously stated I don’t think the jockey gave his mount enough time to respond.

Maybe she wouldn’t have responded anyway, but she needed to be given the chance.

Be interested to see her next run – and how many on TRF are having a bet!

    And on what!

I understand that it looked poor. But I believe far more horses get beaten by jockeys going too soon. They get away without much scrutiny because it is less obvious.

Still haven’t seen the race but if its a dodge pot the trainer may have instructed the jockey to play his hand late

Runner up strike rate exceeds winning strike rate, but regularly on the premises.

But take the rough with the smooth in racing or don’t bother.

    Just watched it. Looks bad
however I’d say the horse is a dodge pot. Even a few yards after the line the horse is in 3rd place. It was keen enough throughout the race despite the experience of races and possibly wouldn’t have gone a lot faster if pushed out. If Whistledown travels that strong in other races yet does not win many you’d think he doesn’t like putting his head in front and it may have been by design to attack late pre race.

“Even a few yards after the line the horse is in 3rd place.”

That is the key point. If the horse had just failed to get up by a nose and was ahead a stride after the line, I would have agreed she was an unlucky loser courtesy of a poor ride.

Maybe Bass should have got after her a bit earlier to make it look better but I am not convinced she would have found much. Her form figures are hardly inspiring. She has also been tried in a hood, to no great effect.
