Often a good gold cup trial, will be fascinating to see how Weekender fares over the 2m round this track, looked a tad short of a gear last season against raheen house over 1m6f but this horse could have bundles of improvement left in it. Magic Circle is one that is on the upgrade as well after his 6length Chester cup win and could give this lot a very good run for their money. Another that takes the eye is the Balding trained Montaly – this horse at 8/1 could have a massive run in him having course form and has proven that 2m on good ground is just what he wants – if he is at peak fitness then he will certainly make the others have to prove their worth to beat him and is looking like the shrewd bet to my eyes.
May 24, 2018 at 01:56 #1354817Weekender for me.
Fancied Magic Circle at Chester (as I mentioned at the time) but that was a handicap and he was well drawn that day.
Played the favourite for this as it’s often won by an improving type and weekender fits that bill perfectly.
May 24, 2018 at 19:27 #1354886I like mount moriah for this, 6/1 is a good price and he i think he will like the trip.
May 24, 2018 at 19:31 #1354888I agree Ham, I’ve also done Mount Moriah @ 6/1, also done 9/4 Weekender.
Hopefully Weekender will get the lead and MM will follow him.Value Is EverythingMay 24, 2018 at 19:35 #1354889Red Verdon could outrun his odds, obviously has to prove he stays this far but 20s maybe to big
May 24, 2018 at 19:42 #1354892Talk about improving a horse…
May 24, 2018 at 20:18 #1354901At 20/1 I’m happy to take the risk they’ll supplement Magic Circle for the Gold Cup. Have backed him too at 20/1 for Melbourne.
May 24, 2018 at 20:48 #1354903Who’s that with, Joe?
I agree 20/1 looks far too big. But don’t want to risk ruining my ante-post Stradivarius value.
MS’s owner is a law unto himself when it comes to placing horses. However, after the Chester Vase and today’s race can’t be any more than 7 lbs behind the favourites and is still improving. Has the form that suggests should definitely run. However, wonder if the hesitating is more to do with connections believing the horse best with give underfoot?Value Is EverythingMay 24, 2018 at 21:02 #1354907Betvictor, Mark and the 20s for Melbourne seems quite generally available.
Trainer seemed a touch surprised saying they’d come here with hopes of being in the first three and saying the Gold Cup, effectively had never been in their thoughts, mentioning Melbourne much more positively.
But tonight’s race landed them the first leg in what looks a tough £1m bonus collection (Ascot Gold Cup next; Goodwood Cup: Lonsdale Stakes) I believe supp fee is £45k. If they’re worried about an Ascot Gold Cup blowing the mark for Melbourbe, well, I think tonight pretty much did that anyway.
May 24, 2018 at 21:08 #1354908This from Racing Post Race report
QUOTES: The plan was to come here and hope to be placed so we could look at going to Melbourne with Magic Circle. That remains the number one target but what we do between now and then has probably changed a little based on today. We’ll have a chat with the doctor and see what he thinks. I don’t know about Ascot – all those things we’ll have to discuss. Melbourne was the priority but on tonight’s performance he looks a far better stayer than we could have imagined he was, so we need to sit back and take stock – Ian Williams, trainer.
May 24, 2018 at 22:33 #1354914Was a good race but don’t think he’ll be suited to the Melbourne Cup myself. Seems to run flat mid-race, be left behind in it if he does that.
May 24, 2018 at 23:03 #1354916Connections are probably deliberately rubbishing Magic Circle’s ability in order to con the Australian handicapper… ie If successful in downplaying the performance and then disappoints at Ascot – his handicap mark (and therefore Malbourne Cup chance) will not be harmed. If Going on to win the Ascot Gold Cup then they won’t care about Australia.
If talking up his Gold Cup chance and then he disappoints there, then they’d have scuppered their chance in both races.
He is a gelding after all, so no need for talking up his ability (a la O’Brien/Coolmore) in order to increase stud value.

Might as well be 200/1 then.
Value Is EverythingMay 25, 2018 at 13:01 #1354932GT I know you’ve had a good bet on Stradivarius at 7/1 – is he still good value at 3/1 in your opinion or is there anything else worth backing in the race?
