There doesn’t seem much point discussing Tiger Roll at length here. I’ve done that often enough in the past. A fantastic horse, who looks to have as big a chance as winning this as he did last year. I’d love for them to consider one of the hurdles for him, winning four different races at The Festival would be some feat, and on hos hurdles mark, it would be achievable. The same applied to Cause of Causes though, but Elliot didn’t entertain it, so I doubt he will with Tiger, and who could blame him. He wouldn’t be out of place in The Gold Cup. Very difficult to beat here, though obviously short enough, and I’d be happy just having him in the perms at current prices, but have him in a fair few at 5’s.
I don’t think Auvergnat is a total lost cause for this. Loads to find with Tiger Roll on last years run, but his win in The Paddy Power made me sit up and take notice. He looked a different horse, and if he could continue that progression, he should make a better fight of it.
Ballycasey is an interesting one, and although you have to go back a bit, the class which is increasingly required to win this, is certainly there, and crucially, he now has experience of the course. Due to run over The Cross Country Course at Punchestown on Sunday, and a good run there will surely see the 14’s evaporate.
Tea For Two has been good enough to run in The Gold Cup, and has acquitted himself very well in other G1’s, and from a yard with plenty of experience in this sphere, he merits plenty of respect as well.
Another horse who’s ran in The Gold Cup is the one that really interests me though, and it’s Edwulf. I think it’s curious that he was due to defend his crown in The Irish Gold Cup until the eleventh hour, and that he didn’t run that badly in last years Blue Riband, yet he didn’t get an entry for this years Gold Cup. He’s got a Grand National entry, but he’s high enough in the weights for that. His run behind Tiger Roll in The National Hunt Chase two years back, is strong form, and though he ended up suffering that horrific seizure, he was in the process of running a sound race. Tiger Roll is a solid, and obvious, yardstick then, and with Edwulf having made the last two festivals, I don’t see any reason why he should’t make a third. It might just be that they’ll save him for Aintree, but I just can’t see him not travelling, and with no Gold Cup entry, what else is there for him?
I’ve not heard any whispers for him here, and I had to add him to the market myself, and the fact that he hasn’t been added to the exchange market is a bit of a negative.
The other (significant) negative is his lack of experience in this discipline, but he has the class required nowadays for this, he’ll have a much better chance off of levels than in a handicap, he’s from a yard bang in form, and he’s owned by JP, who takes this race a lot more seriously than others, and though he has plenty of ammo elsehwere, Edwulf looks just the type to win it back for him.
With the obvious concern that he might not even get an entry, than I can’t go mad, but I just have to take an early chance, and if he gets an entry, I’ll have a proper bet on him. A small play for now.
I wouldn’t put anyone off of Ballycasey at the price, and Tea For Two is an equally interesting contender, but for now…….
Tiger Roll 5’s (Perms)
Edwulf 14’sFebruary 8, 2019 at 13:37 #1396872Auvergnat or Ballycasey for me here, but it’s one I’ll wait for until I see the entries for having a decent bet, but I’ve had a small bet on Ballycasey at 14/1
February 8, 2019 at 14:09 #1396878Can anyone see Don Poli heading here as I see he has an entry?
Could it be a similar path to what Tiger Roll took before taking the Grand National last year?
Might be one of those excuses that the change in discipline brought him back to life considering he’s been pulled up both runs since returning from injury. Convinced he’s still a long term plot waiting to happen…
Don’t know if it’s for this or the national, or both….February 9, 2019 at 20:34 #1397046I think it looks unlikely Jamie, as he got a chance to run the banks course at Punchestown tomorrow, but instead takes in the National Trial. Good luck though if you’re betting him for this, as I know you’re keen on him for Aintree. I was a wee bit concerned with his run at Gowran, but you just never know.
Another interesting contender at Punchestown tomorrow is Hurricane Darwin. Eyecatching in this last term, and it’s good to see him back out in this discipline again.
February 9, 2019 at 22:00 #1397056Don Poli will be run to drop his mark tomorrow, then it’s job done. Can’t see them bothering with this when they have Tiger Roll who’d benefit from the run more so than his Gigginstown counterpart. The latter will be primed for this as well as the team are probably of the opinion he has his work cut out in this year’s National and have sufficient plot jobs laid out in Don Poli and General Principal.
I’m struggling to see past Auvergnat for this. Looked great last time out and looks rock solid.
Edwulf is a really intriguing entry, but I’m usually quite sceptical about horses tackling the banks for the first time. Might be one to watch with a view to future attempts.
February 9, 2019 at 22:09 #1397058Peter, entries not out yet, so it’s very much a speculative stab with me for Edwulf.
The fact that no other firms have added him since my early requests does not bode well lol
February 9, 2019 at 23:05 #1397061Aaaah i see, i didn’t think to check.
February 12, 2019 at 18:03 #1397273Imagine Wounded Warrior is being aimed at this. Connections said as much when they picked him up in the sales and he had a pipe-opener on the track back in December. Questionable whether he’s good enough these days although worth pointing out he did win a handicap at the Punchestown festival pretty easily last year. He’s best price 20/1 which doesn’t particularly appeal. Runs tomorrow in a limited handicap at Fairyhouse.
February 13, 2019 at 23:53 #1397356As mentioned, only a speculative stab on Edwulf so far, it just made sense with no sign, other than my hunch, that he might even be heading here.
NRNB available now though, which changes things just a bit, and I’ve had a decent top up now with that safety net.
February 14, 2019 at 09:41 #1397373Krypton, he was quite eye-catching yesterday. Didn’t realise he was being targeted at this!
Tiger roll will be tough to beat again i think. As much as the National will be his end target, he’ll try for this as well, and ran very well before Xmas. Showing very little signs of the GN havign taken it’s toll.
Clarcam would be interesting if he turned up!

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!February 14, 2019 at 12:52 #1397386No AP bet for me here as I think they’re racing for second place. Of course the GN last year was a hard race but Tiger Roll is a tough little cookie. And as this is a non handicap and Elliot is realistic about his chances at Aintree under a big weight, I expect him to be fully primed to put everything into the XC race at Cheltenham, more so than last year.
February 16, 2019 at 00:33 #1397571Can’t disagree with that Grass. Easy to get distracted looking for prices, but the truth of the matter is that Tiger Roll is absolutely rock solid for this, and I have him in perms all over the place over the last year.
He really should be in The Gold Cup, but the fact that he’s coming here says it all, they want a winner, and I can’t argue with the logic of him going for a repeat here at all.
February 20, 2019 at 16:45 #1398396Been up the course this afternoon, they were watering the cross country course in three places.
February 27, 2019 at 11:58 #1399185No Edwulf, which isn’t really a massive shock……all about Tiger Roll now for me.
I do think Tea For Two could be a danger though.
February 27, 2019 at 15:42 #1399194Auvergnat needs to find a bit on the favourite, but 11/2 looks a generous price to me.
Ultragold is obviously an interesting runner to me, but this is obviously more of a blow out before the National.
Hurricane Darwin ran on well last time out and looks like a good each way shout. Urgent De Gregaine is also of interest.
March 7, 2019 at 22:56 #1400140Ultragold apparently flying at home, not one for me but interesting none the less.
