Looks a solid set of entries, and it doesn’t happen too often, but I like the favourite here, Calett Mad. I knew he’d be favourite when I seen the entries, but the 8’s was a welcome surprise. Represents strong connections, and although as weak a race as you’d get, he still did everything right at Perth last time, with a nice spin over timber. Crucially, he didn’t seem to show any ill-effects from that slog in The Albert Bartlett. I’ve always liked him, and they can send him here on a very nice mark. Fairly strong fancy at that price.
I’m more than happy to have Gas Line Boy, at a mad 16’s, as backup. One of those rare types that just gets better with age, and he continued to defy the years last season. Didn’t run a bad race, and hopefully Aintree won’t have taken too much of a toll. Looks a solid each way shout to me.
The Romford Pele really benefitted from the exit of Gas Line Boy at Aintrees October meeting, and off the back of two wins, he’s hardly been hammered. Seems to have been laid out for this, and warrants serious respect. He also benefitted from the switch to Tom George, from the Rebecca Curtis yard, and who knows if he can get more improvement out of him. Has to be considered.
Rebecca Curtis lost plenty of good ones, not just Pele, and she finally got back on track in The Scottish National. Relentless Dreamer wouldn’t be a complete lost cause, but it’s her Geordie Des Champs who really appeals, as he’s a horse I’ll be keeping a very close eye on this season. I was close to going “three handed” in this, as the 10’s was fair. This is race where I could see me having a saver, and he looks a realistic choice at that price. One to watch for JP.
JP could also have a real old favourite of mine in there, in the shape of Another Hero, who, after a spell on the sidelines, won a very competitive heat at Cheltenhams April Meeting. Bit below par behind Virgilio last time, but I’d fancy him to be closer this time around, and I reckon he’s a horse who hasn’t hit his ceiling. Ground should offer no problems.
Looks like rattling fast ground at the moment, and that will suit good old Ballyalton, down to the ground. He’s another coming off the back of a solid season, where he never really got his ground, and he’s a fair old price at 11’s to make the frame. He deserves another big win after a season in the mud, a season which seen him coming off the back of a long layoff.
The ground will also be of benefit to Beeves. He’s been given every chance by the handicapper, and his last two runs offer plenty of encouragement, especially the run here. In no rush to write him off, and he looked in good nick at Perth last time.
That Perth race was won by Henllan Harri, his best run for some time, and he made the frame in this last year, off of the mark he’ll run off on Sunday, so his place prospects are obvious.
Hopefully we’ll see a competitive field, and there are plenty of others to chew over, but those were the ones who really jumped out. Ballyalton, Geordie Des Champs, Beeves, and Another Hero make loads of appeal, and all could be a saver on the day, but for now, an early play on this pair.

June 27, 2018 at 15:16 #1358708Although Jonjo is one of those trainers that I never seem to get right, if I lump on it’s
down the field and if I hang off a horse I think could do well it goes on and hoses in.
Having said that I can’t ignore the chances of Another Hero at 16/1. I thought
he would do well in the Kim Muir, but he ran into a bit of bother half way round and didn’t
recover. He won well after a year off at Cheltenham in April, and although he didn’t follow
that up last time out at Aintree (maybe the bounce?) He will have no problem if it stays g/f.
I’m in agreement with you Bobby that I think there is more to come from him. I like his chances
June 28, 2018 at 14:09 #1358771Good luck Graham, he’s done me some turns in the past, and even though Sunday will have his optimum conditions, I’ll have him in mind for a few during the softer winter ground as well. He’s a fair old price.
June 30, 2018 at 02:48 #1358934No Calett Mad, but Gas Line is still in there, so happy with that.
Tempted still by the JP pair, but now swaying towards Beeves as the back up, as he’s still a very fair price.
June 30, 2018 at 23:18 #1359113I like Drumlee Sunset. He ran really well LTO when upped to 3 miles, well on top at the line against some good rivals. Unexposed over the trip and has a fantastic record on good ground.
July 1, 2018 at 11:33 #1359145Lots to like here. I missed the 20s on Relentless Dreamer so decided to let him go and have tried Stellar Notion, whose comments LTO contained the magic words “finished strongly” which is what I had been looking for. He’s a big horse and I don’t think a few extra lbs should bother him.
Toviere might appreciate being down near the bottom of the weights as he’s not too big. Stamina possibly slight question mark for all his breeding.
The drift on both might be a bad sign but I’ll always be a sucker for a price
July 1, 2018 at 11:50 #1359149Across all of the racing today this is the only contest that looks worth a punt on.
Virgilio goes for the Skeltons and looks likely to go close if he can reproduce his Aintree form. He appreciates this sort of ground and a mark of 149 doesn’t look beyond him. He’s in form when others aren’t. Another who’s in form is Henllan Harri who arrives off the same mark as last year in which he ran 4th. He comes into this off winning Perth’s big race and seems to love every inch of these races.
Virgilio 10/1
Henllan Harri 7/1July 1, 2018 at 14:37 #1359173Topped up on Gas Line at 25’s, while Beeves is backup at 20’s.
Geordie Des Champs has to be taken as a saver, as he should have a big season ahead of him, and just a question of whether this is a realistic target for him, in view of longer term plans.
July 1, 2018 at 15:46 #1359178I stuck a win only on Relentless Dreamer just in case. Should be a good race, hope not too hot for them.
July 1, 2018 at 16:12 #1359182Nice summer race. I’ll stay loyal with Gas Line Boy at 25/1.
July 1, 2018 at 16:55 #1359186WD Charles…super tipping!!
July 1, 2018 at 18:03 #1359194First class Charles, 10/1 hits the spot

I was watching Another Hero who was traveling nicely in behind the front runners, and when coming
to the 5th last he moved up easily into about 4th when many were getting the kitchen sink thrown
at them. He jumped it well, but then Coleman pulled the horse to the side and pulled up. Don’t get
me wrong, if Coleman thought the horse had gone wrong he was obviously right to pull him up, but
having watched the replay I can’t see anything obvious. However, as long as he’s right and lives to
fight another day that’s the main concern.July 1, 2018 at 18:12 #1359198Sadly Another Hero reported fatally injured Big G
July 1, 2018 at 18:51 #1359207Tonge, I’m absolutely horrified to hear that. Do you know what happened? It wasn’t
a fall or even a bad jump, I’m assuming something like a heart problem. My
commiserations to all the connections, such a sad day.July 1, 2018 at 19:31 #1359214Racing Post race comments say “lost action”. I hate reading that. Those two words are such a heart sinker- it’s almost always horrible news.
July 1, 2018 at 19:35 #1359216Not sure Big G. Somebody said he struck into himself. The Romford Pele was lost in the same race (sounds as if that may have been a heart attack but not confirmed). Not sure what the weather was like in Uttoxeter today but if it was as hot as it was here, you’d have to question the wisdom of running a 3.2 mile handicap chase
July 1, 2018 at 19:39 #1359218hope not too hot for them
Oh. I like summer jumping but…I think I might step away for a while.
