Very weak bunch.
March 13, 2018 at 15:40 #1346221Dare i say that the new one might have relished this stamina test?
March 13, 2018 at 15:44 #1346222No you daren’t!
March 13, 2018 at 15:45 #1346223Stamina won the day, would be interesting to see a rematch on better ground with Melon being by Medicean – just a shame that winning connections had to run Charli Parcs as a spoiler.
March 13, 2018 at 15:46 #1346224I think BD will improve for that performance. Wasn’t as slick at his hurdles and seemed to win that through guts alone.
March 13, 2018 at 15:48 #1346226A bit like Altior last season Im not sure the winner ran up to his best today. The time was identical to the Supreme Novices.
March 13, 2018 at 15:50 #1346227Yeah, exact same according to RP. However, Geraghty is saying that the ground has opened up and is harder work than it would have been earlier in the day.
March 13, 2018 at 15:51 #1346228Not a vintage renewal, doubt if BVD ran to his best, but wasn’t that far off.
Melon improved with a truly run race (has pulled in the past).BVD 5/1 ante-post.
Melon 6/1 “betting without”.
Two winners in one race.
tbh Melon looked asthough he was going better around the turn, but knowing Melon isn’t one to find a great deal – always thought BVD would get there.
Value Is EverythingMarch 13, 2018 at 15:58 #1346229Twice a Champion Hurdler. What else does he have to do ?
March 13, 2018 at 16:01 #1346230The time was identical to the Supreme Novices.
Interesting observation Mike. This was a bit more tactical. I’d like to see Melon another year stronger, on better ground with Ruby up.
Not vintage times for 2m hurdles but it made a good finish.March 13, 2018 at 16:06 #1346232You can only beat what is put in front of you to be fair, one could argue that his timing is excellent having missed clashing with a peak form Faugheen & Annie Power – to me he could end up being like Istabraq, a triple champion that didn’t have any standout rivals.
March 13, 2018 at 16:27 #1346238A gritty performance, which showed he can battle; also first horse to win the Fighting Fifth, Christmas & Champion in the same season since Kribensis in 1989/90.
One has to say, with nothing seemingly else out there; none of the novices/ juveniles look threatening, he’ll be taking on the same horses again. A real dearth of top class 2m hurdlers.
March 13, 2018 at 16:28 #1346240Depends what they do with Melon. If he reopposes next year I could see him going close.
March 13, 2018 at 16:33 #1346241I felt Buveur D’air would go five lengths clear up the hill but I had to sweat for my ante-post bets on him.
I hope that wasn’t Buveur D’air’s best form because it leaves a very mediocre look to the division if he is best by such a small margin.
At least a horse who is a previous Champion and is on a winning run has won it today.
I didn’t think Faugheen was anything like his best in defeat last time. No offence to Supasundae but Faugheen would have spat him out when at his prime.
I got plenty pelters for decrying Yorkhill earlier this season, so what’s the excuse this time? The horse ended up here as the target of last resort after desperate rehashes in trip and discipline. Surely if he was Champion Hurdle quality, it would have been his target all along. It was very odd to see a JLT winner end up in this race after a pop at 3 mile chasing. Sometimes horses just don’t live up to trainer and jockey comments.
Elgin was not disgraced but was never really involved while Ch’Tibello just isn’t that good.
It’s just as well I had the ante-post bets or I would have been feeling rather flat about this year’s race.
Maybe Apples Jade should haveoops scrap that one
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
March 13, 2018 at 16:43 #1346244Poor renewwal. Melon, Mick Jazz and Identity thief ran to their marks relative to each other and its very difficult to believe the three of them improved by any more than 2/3 pounds, making the winning performance somewhere around 164, which is 5 pounds below buveur dair rating. I think that’s about fair.
March 13, 2018 at 17:40 #1346263BDA guttsy there…Melon is an out and out 2miler
BDA might not have run 100% to form after an easy season….time will tell at Aintree etc.
Melon may well go to Punchestown in a small field Irish Champion at a short price and get turned over iMO, he relishes a fast pace like today.

Hindsight is 20/20 so make the most of it!March 13, 2018 at 23:06 #1346330Some scary moments there. I think Buveur d’Air jumped quite poorly at some hurdles, at least for his standards.
