I’m just about getting over the 2015 renewal of this race, when I had Belgian Bill at 25’s. He finished 2nd on the day, which I was happy with for the each way money, but when he was awarded the race a few months later, following the disqualification of So Beloved, I was gutted. Definitely one that got away, and I went for some compensation again last year, and he just came up short, but, again, rewarded me with a decent each way return.
He could be back for more this year, and following a decent winter in Meydan, his last run, in The Hunt Cup, was very encouraging. The draw was against him that day, and things went further against him when he was practically left on his own on the far side, with only 2 others for company. He ran very well though, and I seen enough to suggest he’s worth another bash here. He’ll come here 3 lbs lower than last term, and I can’t possibly ignore the 50’s with Sportsbook, that’s just massive for this horse.
In front of him in both this race last year, and in this years Hunt Cup, was Master The World. At 33’s, I’m very much hoping that the nature of this race, like Bill, can again bring out the best in him, and at that price, I’m willing to take a chance. Very encouraging run at Ascot, doing plenty at the end, and not that far away at all, I think he’s a big price with Paddy Power.
Early doors, but had to have a go the pair of them, as the prices just look wrong.
August 4, 2017 at 08:44 #1312732Took a chance on First Selection E/W @ 33’s 5 places.
Crisford seems to be having a few winners lately and hoping this one can come back to form. Second to The Gurkha in the French Guineas last year on soft.
GL all
August 4, 2017 at 08:49 #1312733I haven’t had a great season in this kind of big-field handicap so far. One of my mistakes has been expecting a strong pace as a given and watching them crawl for the first half mile.
Anyway, I still can’t resist having a small go on Tony Curtis. He really caught my eye last time, travelling like a monster before getting a little tight for room, dropping back and keeping on again near the finish. It’s only his second handicap, he’ll go on the ground and I think his strong-travelling style is a good fit for the track.
August 4, 2017 at 08:53 #1312736Hannon is very sweet on him LS
If they go quick from the get go he’ll be thereabouts at the business endGaelic Warrior Gold Cup Winner 2026
August 4, 2017 at 09:03 #1312740GL with Tony Curtis think there is a race in him,but really think the ground (as for many) as gone against him,dam was never tried on going like this and was more of a AW performer, but at double fig odds hope he wins for you
August 4, 2017 at 12:11 #1312758I fancy One Word More to run well.It has been windy in Sussex for the last day so the ground will have dried a fair bit.
If you go to back a certainty always buy a return ticket.
August 4, 2017 at 12:54 #1312769A really difficult one for me this so I’ve backed 3. The first horse I backed was Zhui Feng at 14/1. Given a mark of 106 for winning the Hunt Cup but when you consider he went close in a Cambridgeshire off 103 this probably isn’t an impossible mark. He may not have run on soft before but has decent form on good to soft in the past. He’s been drawn in 4 and there’s every chance he could steal this as well. My main bet is Master The World at 7/1. He’s in form and finished an unlucky 2nd in this last year off a higher mark. With Moore on board I can see him going very close at least. I put him up on the ante-post comp at 16/1 but alas failed to follow my instincts and didn’t have a penny on myself. 7/1 is still fair enough in my book though. I’ve also backed Withernsea at 14/1 as he most definitely has his conditions and is obviously still thriving after a close 3rd in the Bunbury Cup. He did me a favour at Newbury in May and is only 4 pounds higher in the weights and is reunited with Hanagan for the big day. Had a saver on Hors De Combat at 40/1 just in case he wins but I have to admit I’d be surprised given his dependency for fast ground.
Best of luck everyone.
August 4, 2017 at 14:58 #1312797Tony Curtis looking good according to KP, so I’ve had to add that one to Birchwood, Masham and Withernsea.

August 4, 2017 at 15:14 #1312801My main bet is Master The World at 7/1.
After months of backing loser after loser after loser it’s looking like I’m finally emerging from the dark times.
Well done VTC for not making the same mistake as me and snapping up the early doors price.
There’s no stopping Moore today, I can’t believe the gap opened for him.
