I know this is a bit off the beaten track for here, but I’m just back from
the cinema with Mrs BigG having been to see THE LADY IN THE VAN. Driving home,
and singing the praises of Maggie Smith who is a revelation in this excellent
thoughtful humorous film, I just wondered what price she would be for best actress
at the Oscars. She is simply peerless when it comes to portraying eccentric
elderly ladies with a healthy dollop of feistiness thrown in.Ok, I’m biased because I love Maggie Smith, she can do very little wrong in my
eyes, but this was more than a typically clever, relatively low budget, British film
(which Americans love). There is great depth in her moving portrayal of this character,
based incredibly on the true story of this fascinating old lady.Anyway, the point I’m getting to is that she is best priced 25/1 (33/1 with Betfair)
in the running for BEST ACTRESS. I haven’t seen the performances of Brie Larson or
Kate Blanchett, who are favourites, but they are going to have to be bloody good to top
Maggie. It’s a good way off, with the OSCARS being next February, but watch for any
significant drop in her price, as the OSCARS PANEL are about as leaky as Julian Assange. If you haven’t seen it yet, go treat yourself
November 26, 2015 at 12:50 #1223398I agree; I came away thinking it was an ‘acting masterclass’; my one concern being that it was Maggie Smith acting as Maggie Smith because it’s so seamless that one forgets she’s actually ‘acting’. Maybe more chance of winning a BAFTA perhaps? Mark Kermode said that Inside Out should be nominated for best film, not just best animation.

BAFTA’s, although there are no prices available for that at the moment.
It is a bit of a long shot, but at 33/1 it’s a bit of a fun bet without
having to risk a lot.Again, I couldn’t agree more with you Moe, it was an “acting masterclass” but
as you say, it was what Maggie Smith does so well. She can do the cantankerous
eccentric old lady without batting an eye, but there was light and shade in
this performance. There were very touching moments too, I’m sure I must have
gotten some grit in my eye
