If Thistlecrack isn’t in the line up then Cue Card will only have Tea For Two & Josses Hill to beat. A far cry from the Long Run/Kauto Star years…
December 18, 2016 at 15:47 #1277800I had a dirty £10 EW on Silviniaco Conti at 50s 1/4 1-2-3 after Coneygree news came out.
December 18, 2016 at 15:50 #1277801Hard lines for Coneygree backers and the race in general.
December 18, 2016 at 16:13 #1277805Josses Hill might be in….
December 18, 2016 at 17:51 #1277820Blaklion has been of each way interest to me since the Hennessy (40/1 until today).
I saw some race readers report he was beaten before the straight but I didn’t see it quite like that.
He looked like the winner turning in or perhaps in acknowledgement of Native River’s battling qualities it would be more accurate to say he was travelling best.
He then went into a sort of limbo till the second last and slowly faded from contention from there. I read the jockey say he thought something might have temporarily affected his wind. So a possible non-runner next week but given his excellent, progressive, novice profile and how he went for 90% of the Newbury showpiece I thought he was worth an each way interest at those odds.
If Thistlecrack runs he would be my idea of the best of the fancied horses.December 18, 2016 at 18:03 #1277822Coneygree not turning up looks like resulting in a bigger field, not smaller!

This news about Coneygree could properly screw me.
Only because I’ve been on Valseur Lido antepost for the Lexus for a while. And then when they confirmed Lexus was the target I topped up. And then again. And then again. And then again.
If they divert him I’ll be devastated.
As for the king George, if Thistlecrack runs I’ll stick that in a multi over Christmas.
December 19, 2016 at 11:08 #1277851Thistlecrack will run…..
December 19, 2016 at 11:13 #1277852Very exciting news.
December 19, 2016 at 12:35 #1277856I hope this doesn’t end in tears. Listening to Tizzard I get the impression this plan is very much down to the owner.
Personally, I would have preferred Thistlecrack to have missed Kempton altogether. I don’t think Kempton will suit and his lack of experience will make the challenge even more difficult. Although he just about got away with it last year I don’t think the track is ideal for Cue Card either. Only a small number of horses have doubled at Kempton and Cheltenham and that must be in no small way due to the chalk and cheese nature of the two courses.
I think the Gold Cup trial and then the Gold Cup itself would have been a much better idea. If all went well would it have been such a negative to be going to Kempton as a nine-year-old Gold Cup winner rather than an relatively untested eight-year-old novice?
As regards betting the people happiest about this decision will probably be those who have supported Thistlecrack for the World Hurdle.
December 19, 2016 at 13:40 #1277862Thank goodness for that, it was beginning to look like a 1 horse race, with a cast
of extras. Both are wonderful horses, but I think Thistlecrack’s engine is so
powerful that he’s going to be hard to beat. There are still some rumblings in
some quarters that he’s never been taken on, and that may show any flaws in his
jumping. There’s no chance Cue Card will take him on, and I think if anything
else does their chance of finishing anywhere in the money will disappear. I
think he’ll get his way up front.6/4 and 7/w for either doesn’t float my boat anyway, I’d be tempted to have an
e/w on Bristol De Mai at 50/1, who I’ve always thought would win a big one, he’s
not been out of the 1st 2 in the last 10 races, but I think he’ll probably head
for the Rowland Meyrick. I think this is just a watch and enjoy race for me.December 19, 2016 at 18:06 #1277887Has anyone considered that Thistlecrack might and I am only saying might end up like Long Run and be the horse with a hellofa engine but unable to jump fences at pace.
I hope I am wrong about this but my suspicion is that the pace of top class chases will make Thistlecrack make errors and that is not something I want to see.
What is wrong with him going the novice route and learning his trade before being put to the sword against Grade 1 horses
I get the feeling I will be watching the KG from behind the settee!!
December 19, 2016 at 20:14 #1277896I think the king george is exactly the race that thistlecrack needs. He doesn’t want too much time to think about his fences. It’s also good to watch a prime time race with prime time participation. Need these races before March. It’s also a positive that we don’t have to wait to see what Mullins is sending over.

Why won’t Kempton suit ? He’s won at Aintree, Wincanton, Cheltenham, Chepstow….courses seem immaterial. The second down the back might be a problem but i can’t see a reason why Kempton off all places would suddenly catch him out.
December 20, 2016 at 13:52 #1277915Thistlecrack’s running isn’t a surprise after Coneygree came out. Far more likely to get his own way in front. Josses Hill could take Thistlecrack on, but Henderson’s horse is not in the same league as the Bradstock’s when it comes to bold and accurate jumping…. And Joss won’t want to encourage a fast pace, because the slower they go the more his speed is an advantage in a finish.
Silviniaco Conti and Road To Ritches are others who can lead. I’d particulrly like the former to try it, becuse I believe he’s best attacking and his jumping is sound. But neither is an out-and-out front-runner.
Thistlecrack’s supporters hve got lucky with Coneygree’s absence.
Value Is EverythingDecember 20, 2016 at 14:00 #1277916I’m trying not to get too excited prematurely but I’ve got 8/1 thistlecrack for KG and 13/2 Yanworth for Chistmas hurdle!
December 20, 2016 at 15:56 #1277928Having once again looked at the World Hurdle form from this year, I have to say that I think Thistlecrack is a freak of the highest order and will win this pretty comfortably. Take him out of the World Hurdle + Alpha Des Obeaux’s won it by 22L to an ex-Gold Cup winner, followed by the previous World Hurdle winner, the previous year’s Coral Cup winner, the 2015 World Hurdle 2nd, the 2015 Albert Bartlett winner + the 2015 Aintree Hurdle winner.
This form is just ridiculous.
