Seems a long way off, but always interested to hear peoples long term fancies.
One of my 2 main fancies, Golden Wonder, is entered up for The Munster National at the weekend, and I hope it’s the start of a big season for him. He came along nicely last term, and he topped it off with a great performance to finish second in The Irish National. He followed it up with a creditable sixth in The Galway Plate, a race that would be short enough for him now. No shame in a sixth place finish, as it’s always a competitive affair. I’ll keep everything crossed he makes a winning start, with all roads then leading to Aintree. I’ve had a few quid on him at decent prices on Betfair, but the 33’s available with the books at the moment, still looks very fair.
My other main fancy is Trustan Times. Last seen when making the frame in The Scottish National, I’ve taken a chance at 66’s. Could see him having a fairly low key season mixing fences and hurdles, before being let loose at Aintree. Still available at 50’s, and I’ve had a few more quid on at that price on Betfair.
Obviously with a race of this nature, and with the season just getting going, there’s plenty of others who appeal as well, I could literally make a case for a couple of dozen
Life will be tougher this time around, but my big hope from last year, Double Seven is sure to have a careful campaign with this race in mind, and he’ll hopefully do himself proud again. Eastlake, another owned by JP could also be a very interesting contender, and I’ll keep an eye on him. He took to the place last year, and I reckon he needs a trip. Can see him developing into a very serious contender. I’m hoping Cause of Causes can atone for a poor show at Fairyhouse, and he’s another to keep in mind, though he may have other prizes on the agenda.
Cheltenham winner, Midnight Prayer, is another who might fit the bill, along with another fresh out his novice season, Ely Brown.
Early doors I know, but looking forward to hearing others thoughts and fancies as the season kicks on.
October 11, 2014 at 16:06 #492104Less than 6 months away! I’m already getting giddy!
Right now i’m still very sweet on
Long Rung
. His mark is slowly decreasing, which only encourages me.
I
think he can complete.
Others of interest to me are
Harry Topper
who just screams Grand National to me.
Duke of Lucca
sprung to form at Aintree (characteristically when i wasn’t on him!) and is given serious consideration if he can truly stay.
Monbeg Dude
continues to be of interest and i’m slowly coming onto
Twirling Magnet
. His jumping needs retuning, but his run in the Summer National at Uttoxeter suggests to me he will stay and does have a little something about him. How he and Monbeg Dude run later today will dictate how seriously i take them… for now!
And, of course being a sucker for sentiment; i’m staying loyal to
Dunowen Point
. Had a shocking season last year, but seems to be slowly returning to a competitive state of mind, albeit over shorter. Need to see him over further to know for sure whether or not the last three years have been a waste of breath!
October 12, 2014 at 12:15 #492143Good luck with Dunowen Point Peter, hopefully he’ll repay the faith like Auroras Encore did.
October 12, 2014 at 15:46 #492164Haha well i knew Auroras Encore would stay! This one is giving me absolutely no clue!
October 12, 2014 at 15:55 #492165Good thread Bob,I’m of the opinion
Shutthefrontdoor
is a Gold cup horse but early clues to his long term plans for this season will be wether he goes hurdling during the campaign,if so it would seem pretty obvious to me that he’s beeing targeted for a tilt at the Grand National and at 25/1 now I’m happy taking it.A mark of 150 certainly isn’t doing him any favours as he’s up in the 11-5 range now.
October 12, 2014 at 19:53 #492176At this very early stage I like 2 and have backed them EW already:
First one up is a long shot but there is something I like about Triolo Dalene. My 2nd selection is Twirling Magnet who I followed last season
October 12, 2014 at 22:38 #492183I thought
Rocky Creek
ran really well this year (5th) and he had some health problems coming into the race. He seemed to run out of petrol but with another year on his back and a touch of class I’ll give him a shot at 33/1 as he’s lightly raced and in top class hands, he’s never fallen either (kiss of death).
When
Night In Milan
won well at Doncaster in March over 3 miles 2 furlongs I was interested to see if he’d make a National horse one day. 17 places from 28 starts and 7 wins amongst that, he has time on his side. I am not sure soft going is his best surface despite having won on heavy back in the day. Good ground and a decent mark would be interesting if he gets in. He’s 50/1 currently.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
October 12, 2014 at 23:15 #492189Cheers Gord, I’ve chucked a few quid at him myself for The Gold Cup, but don’t think both races will be out of the question. I think you’re right, in that a few spins over hurdles await, and I think publicly, Jonjo will target Aintree, with a "last minute" decision to also take in The Gold Cup en route……I reckon he’s a serious player in both.
October 12, 2014 at 23:21 #492190He’s struggled in his last few races Gdc, but he’s one I’m keeping any eye on myself, he’s due to get dropped a good few pounds soon, and there’s got to be a chance, he has a sudden return to form……hopefully when the price is right
October 12, 2014 at 23:30 #492191Steve, I sh1t you not, I was looking over some targets earlier tonight, and I realised I hadn’t put up Night In Milan for The National, can’t believe I left him out. He’s been on the radar for this since his surprising withdrawal from "The Whitbread" in April, which I thought was a really strange decision, thought he looked a strong contender for that. I thought connections just might have swerved that race, so not to blow his mark for Aintree……just a thought, and the 50’s is extremely fair.
October 13, 2014 at 18:33 #492252VTC: yes but you just have to ensure you back him at the tracks that Jonjo aims his horses at
October 14, 2014 at 16:25 #492328Absolutely Gdc
October 14, 2014 at 19:40 #492349It’s a long shot but I just had a feeling he’d make up into a National horse one day. I remember the trainer’s family had Seven Towers who beat my Ante Post horse Lord Gyllene at Uttoxeter, causing serious palpitations, before my selection bounced back in tremendous style to run out probably the easiest winner I have ever seen in a Grand National when slamming Suny Bay 25 lengths.
That race was memorable for other reasons, after being abandoned till the Monday following security alerts and chaos on the Saturday, and also for the incredible SP for the winner of 14/1, when the last show before the off had been 11/1.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

Any relation to 1973 runner up

October 14, 2014 at 22:55 #492379No, but he cost me a packet on Sunday
October 15, 2014 at 08:36 #492385Lord Guyllene. That was a great era for staying chasers and a time when I used to love going to Uttoxeter. Looking at the names that ran at that time; remember the ill fated Samlee who, I believe was owned by a group of people at a pub somewhere? And Earth Summit was knocking around. I’ve got a 1999 racing calendar next to me with Earth Summit on the cover. As part of my spring cleaning things like that should be thrown out but I can’t bring myself to do it
October 15, 2014 at 18:09 #492407Owned by The White Lion Partnership moe, so I think it’s safe to say that’ll involve a pub.
