Everybody from D Jacob to Fitzy seem dead keen to get Rocky Creek into the GN, yet in the only two races I’ve watched him properly in, he’s faded noticeably toward the finish.
January 28, 2014 at 18:05 #466357I think Colbert Station is worth another chance, was in the hunt when unseating and will have less weight this year. AP will have a raft of decent McManus horses to choose from but it would speak volumes if he opts for CS again. 20/1 isn’t a wonderful price at this early stage but is my number one at the moment.
Colbert Station went out like a light at the weekend, Rich. I’d be surprised if it was just down to a lack of fitness.
I agree he didn’t see out the race very well at Leopardstown after travelling reasonably well, but I’m willing to give him another shot over further. Whether he’ll have another prep run before April I’m not sure, or indeed he’ll go for the race again, so probably not wise to have a bet just yet.
I don’t think Rocky Creek is mature enough to be a contender this year personally, I’d be looking at a battle hardened 10 year old proven over 3 miles plus which the recent trends back up. Who fits that bill I’ll have to look at!
January 28, 2014 at 19:03 #466361I’ve noticed that Aurora’s Encore has run with unusual enthusiasm this season, despite finishing unplaced. The National can break many horses – AE isn’t one of them by the look of things and might well be worth a bet come April.

yes he certainly has been running well this season, I thought the same to
I do love Balthazar king but last year he just went to fast and ran out of steam, I think his main aim is Cheltenham before they think about Aintree, though he will be entered

January 28, 2014 at 20:08 #466373I used to think that Aurora’s was a terrible jumper [for good reason] but I reckon now that he’s just incredibly brave and probably attacks his fences. He must be a tough cookie to come back from some of the horrendous falls he’s had. I think the Smiths just make sure their horses enjoy whatever they do.
January 29, 2014 at 00:26 #466400Been announced tonight that Auroras Encore has been retired after suffering an injury in The Skybet.
Apparently got an injury to the off fore, and has had an operation to put screws in his leg.
January 29, 2014 at 00:58 #466404Just heard this.Thank goodness he’s [hopefully] going to be ok.

January 29, 2014 at 12:44 #466424Well, that’s got me flumoxed. Bog Warrior is interesting has he still got a Gold Cup entry? Supposedly recovered from his injury of last year. And Massini’s Maguire. Also Dr Newland and Fergal have horses entered. Question is, if Long Run does run which horses will be in the handicap?? I thought Swing Bill had been retired, so was surprised to see him running still this year. Will no doubt run another decent race.
January 29, 2014 at 12:50 #466427Nice to see a few older ones are still around thought both The Package (Remember him just failing to get to Cheif Dan George at Cheltenham under one of them hold up Murphy rides!) and Pandorama (The horse who was once tipped to topple Kauto and Denman) had been retired, notice neither of them have run in a while but would be nice to see them pop round safely.
Another that caught my eye was Quito De La Roque, I remember him notching a couple of wins in row at the time I thought he could be something special, notice hes been struggling a bit albeit in a high grade and I wouldnt be surprised if this trip brought a bit out of him.
Notice Hunt Ball is entered to, what a story that would be ……

January 29, 2014 at 19:37 #466465Looks like I jinxed poor old Auroras
January 29, 2014 at 20:39 #466471Well, at least we know who Ryan will be riding now. Has there ever [recently] been a year where we lost the National winner after he’d won? I think if AE had been pts I would have struggled with the rest of the season
January 29, 2014 at 21:41 #466475just glad auroras encore is ok, hope that he continues to recover well from the operation, it goes to show how well he was going to even finish the race on Saturday while sustaining a fracture

January 29, 2014 at 21:45 #466476Sire Collognes and Rocky Creek suddenly become very interesting with Nicholls able to manipulate the weights with Tidal Bay.
January 29, 2014 at 22:49 #466485Tidal Bay is on a mark of 168, though what Grand National mark he’ll get is uncertain. Last year given a mark 9 lbs lower than his then "current" mark. 159 this time?
Long Run has now been dropped to 163! From 182 just 6 runs ago. He’ll probably be dropped some more for his National mark, 156?
There will be plenty of room for the man in charge to "get plenty of horses in the handicap".
