Lion Na Bearnai 200/1Bookmakers are fighting amongst themselves who’s going to have the biggest priced favourite, with those at the head of the market imo representing value. Chance Du Roy, Mendip Express and Ballybriggan. I’ve backed 4 (so far) against the field.
Chance Du Roy won this last year and has naturally been upped for that. But he’s the sort who only just does enough and loves it around here. Stable still in cracking form. Although a few might be more progressive, course form counts for something.
Mendip Express did well early season last year before seemingly going amiss. Had a pipe opener winning a novice over hurdles in good fashion to suggest whatever ailed him has been put right. Fav for the 4 miler at the Festival when things went wrong. Can resume progress. Prolific Point to Point winner from a stable in cracking form.
Ballybriggan looks to have turned over a new leaf for his excellent new Irish stable. Although jumping is a worry, is one who could progress further.
Master Neo just should not be 50+/1. 4th to Sam Winner and Druids Nephew at Cheltenham. Weakened late and arguably paid for doing too much too soon. That coming less than a week after a win at Market Rasen. Worth a good bet even if stable form is a worry.
Value Is EverythingDecember 6, 2014 at 13:09 #497644It would be nice to see Burton Port put in a good round.

Peter, I hope you had a few quid on Oscar Time.
I doubt he is, but I just hope Balbriggan is ok, 2 weeks ago he was doing me proud, then that today, so hard
December 6, 2014 at 14:06 #497660It didn’t look very good VTC…….

December 6, 2014 at 14:09 #497663Nope, he’s gone

I would have really enjoyed watching Oscar Time defy his age but incidents like that just take out any possible thrill.
That’s four now over these new fences. Would bigger fences have made any difference?
December 6, 2014 at 23:25 #497746As an Our Father fan, have watched the race three times and I’m still mystified how he doesn’t at least place!

You might have thought that he blew up but with the weight of money on him it would suggest that he was spot on for the race. I don’t subscribe to the theory that Connor went too early on him as he was travelling beautifully turning into the straight and I’m not sure the jockey could have done anything else.
I thought it was one of the rides of the season by SWC as he could have got stuck into Oscar Time when Our Father went on but he bided his time and pounced at the right time. I was willing Cedre Bleu home to give him a famous double but what a record he has over the National fences.
December 7, 2014 at 12:13 #497772Steve, Great run from Mendip Express, that was much more like it.
Shame about Balbriggan and with Oscar Whisky suffering the same fate later it was a day’s racing I didn’t get much joy out of watching.
It was sort of fitting that Mendip Express got chinned by a 25/1 horse aged 13, to compound the misery but he ran an excellent race and will surely be thereabouts in similar company this season.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
December 7, 2014 at 16:29 #497799They did say they tried Mendip in the Scottish and he didn’t stay so not sure if they will target the National. Do Kings Theatres stay that sort of trip?
December 7, 2014 at 19:16 #497814Peter, I hope you had a few quid on Oscar Time.
Sure did!
Chuffed to bits with that one.Real shame about Balbriggan though. Was it really fence related?
December 7, 2014 at 21:32 #497831Ch 4 said it was an injury more often seen in flat racing. Which doesn’t, of course, make it less tragic.
