Tour des Champs and Merry King – this test could suit either of them. Always thought Wyck Hill had a decent race in him.
Just a race to enjoy and watch for me as soo hard to pick.
December 28, 2013 at 14:51 #463267GET IN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a run from Tidal Bay though. I thought he was going to do me.
Mountainous victory !!!!
December 28, 2013 at 17:50 #463286Criticism would be much too harsh, but I’m sure the Tidal Bay would have won it if Daryl Jacob had aimed the old b****r in between the first two on the flat instead of round the outside! Easy to say that in hindsight though and it was still a fine effort by the old boy.
December 28, 2013 at 19:52 #463301Well done Mark, and all Mountainous backers (good result for Hills?)
Tidal Bay seems to be a different species from the rest. A few days away from being 13, and he just failed to give lumps away today.

What would that formline have looked like if they’d got him away from HoJo much sooner?
December 28, 2013 at 20:04 #463302He still did pretty well under Howard. And, who knows what might have happened if he hadn’t’ve unseated in the National when he was still with him? Or perhaps we’ll find out next year? He really deserves a race like that [especially now that PN has found the magic formula for wining it].
December 28, 2013 at 20:16 #463303Great to see a big race win for Richard Lee, although I backed the wrong one..
What a run from Tidal Bay. I hope they look after him now as he’s a real superstar. Not meant as any slight at DJ as he did nothing wrong whatsoever but I just thought Ruby, who knew him so well, might have got him there.
December 28, 2013 at 20:26 #463305Hear, hear! Fantastic horse, super talented. Another few yards and result would have been different. Such a strong finish carrying so much more weight – amazing.
December 28, 2013 at 20:34 #463307Given the highly favourable treatment top horses get from Phil Smith in The National, plus the soft fences, TB would make for a very tempting bet to finish his career on the most glorious of highs.
December 28, 2013 at 20:41 #463308Just watched the race again [for some reason I can only watch one replay on ATR these days]and I think Daryl did consider getting him to run up between the leading two horses, but there was no room.
December 28, 2013 at 20:46 #463310Ok I admit I am talking a bit through my pocket, but I watched Tidal Bay, who was traveling so well, and was praying for Daryl to press the button before he decided to. The horse simply won’t run out of steam and carrying the weight he had, he was not going to take of like a bullet either. To be fair to Dayrl he didn’t ride a bad race at all, I just think he mistimed his final push and I’m a bit gutted for Tidal Bay and his connections as I think he perhaps could or should have won.
My other interest, Vintage Star, ran a cracker and just ran out of puff in the last furlong, absolutely no complaint there, I got a good run for my money.
Congratulations to Mark and Moe for digging the winner out, I hope you guys did well out of it. I’m also glad for Richard Lee who comes across as a right gentleman, it’s nice to see a local trainer bag a big prize like this, twice in three years is some feat.
December 28, 2013 at 21:05 #463312I had Monbeg Dude in last years postponed renewal, too

Love these big field handicaps.
December 28, 2013 at 21:53 #463328Couldn’t work out why Vintage Star didn’t get home [another reason for looking at the race again]. Thought perhaps he’d clouted a few fences, but he jumped well, and he’s won on heavy before. Even so, he ran very well. I thought for a while that Knock a Hand might stay on and win [thought he ran amazingly well and worth following if he does a raid oop north again] and was getting very animated watching him. For the first time ever, I was the one NOT wanting Tidal Bay to win, much as I love him. It seems to be very much a course for specialist horses and trainers [and jockeys]. And my new’ish system of not studying the race much and limiting myself to 4 horses
seems to be paying off these days. The only way Tidal Bay could have come between horses would have been if he’d knocked them both over, I reckon. Wasn’t it more of a bunch finish in last years Lexus? It was a super race to watch, though. No fallers, to my knowledge, and superb jumping
throughout.
December 29, 2013 at 11:20 #463357Well done Mark and Moe.
Had a long look at Mountainous yesterday, but in the end went for Tidal Bay. Gutted he didn’t make it, but some performance from him. I’ve mentioned it before, but he’s got to be the most popular in training by some way, and though one part of me wants them to bow out after that, you never know with him, and he may just have one big swan song to come.
Mountainous deserved that, and be interesting to see if he can translate that way from Chepstow. Aintree in the spring is a million miles away form a slog round Chepstow in December, but I’d tend to think he’ll remain very competitive in these races. Be great for connections if he did, after the loss of Le Beau Bai. Takes a certain type to perform round Chepstow, and although an obvious shout, it would be hard to ignore him in this again next year.
Great run from Hakes Point too, I couldn’t have had him at all, and he’s another who’s bound to have Aintree on the agenda. He looks the type who may take in either The Racing Plus Chase, or the 3 Miler on the opening day of The Festival, and will definitely be giving him more consideration than I did in this.
My main bet was Tour Des Champs, having bet him Antepost, despite my reservations about him in the opening post. Sometimes these horses you follow over a cliff, repay you in the end, but patience is wearing thin. That was my final chance I’d think with him, too bad to be true. At least I haven’t bet him for Aintree………
December 29, 2013 at 12:45 #463366I was in the process of typing up that Tidal Bay was still on offer at 33/1 with WH (20/1 and 25/1 elsewhere), and before I got to the end of my post, it had gone
He is still available at 25/1 and if he gets there fit and well, that has to be very good value. I would doubt if he would be any better than half that price come the big day. He would be 13 by that time but he has most certainly not lost his love for the sport, or his ability. As the man from the magic sign would say….."GET ON!!!!!!"
December 29, 2013 at 13:17 #463372Tidal Bay reminds me of Dessie [the difference being that Des didn’t eat people for breakfast quite as muc], in that he channels all of his aggression into winning races [and he seems to be a whirling dervish of anger]. Someone on racecaller said that the majority of winners had won at Chepstow and, of those many had ran there last time; this narrowed it down to Hawkes Point and Mountainous [ didn’t read that till last night as I still can’t seem to get onto racecaller or oddschecker without my computer crashing]. This race could be a decent betting prospect in future, although the stats will probably get turned on their head completely in 12 months time.
December 29, 2013 at 13:28 #463374I’d be looking at the Midlands National for Mountainous.
If it’s soft for the festival then the William Hill could be a possibility.
Certainly should be looking at that week ( Cheltenham / Uttoxeter ) for a suitable race. Seven top three finishes in eight chase starts is excellent. The other finish being a fourth.
December 30, 2013 at 13:11 #463490Reckon One in a Milan will run a big race in the Midlands if the ground is less testing.
