May 1, 2013 at 21:29 #438151The Derby is kind of a crapshoot nowadays, so I’m going with Black Onyx. Based purely on the fact that a horse named Black Quartz upset the Queen’s Cup Hurdle Stakes last Saturday, setting a track record while at it.

May 1, 2013 at 23:27 #438178Are RUK or ATR planning to show live coverage? According to the Sky planner neither have it i their schedules which will be very sad indeed – failing that does anyone know of a free online stream?
As for the race itself I am with Orb all the way.
May 2, 2013 at 00:14 #438186At the Races apparently will have it, on Saturday at least. They’ve got "Stateside" listed for 5:15pm and 9:15pm on their website.
There will be some live streaming via http://stream.nbcsports.com/liveextra/ although I have no idea if it works for non-Americans.
At least one of these two networks may have a live stream (will shut off when the main NBC broadcast comes on. Not sure if the stream will work this year since NBC Sports Network picked up the undercards).

http://www.wave3.com/category/200260/wave-3-liveIf you can’t watch, listen: http://horseracingradio.net/
This will have every race but the Turf Classic and Derby.NBC is a terrible network in all aspects, so most of the coverage won’t be worth watching anyhow.

Don’t forget the undercard races!
Wise Dan and Point of Entry, Champion Older Male and Champion Turf horse, respectively, will face off in the G1 Turf Classic.
In the G2 Churchill Downs, Champion Male Sprinter Trinniberg will face the Louisiana speed freak Delaunay, among others.
Friday’s G2-that-should-be-a-G1 La Troienne is topped by last year’s Oaks winner Believe You Can.
The G3-that-should-be-a-G1 Twin Spires Turf Sprint features the grand old man Chamberlain Bridge as he tries to win a race that he won way back in 2009 but has eluded him since. He’ll have to defeat several other turf sprint veterans to get it.
Then there’s the G1 Humana Distaff, the G2 Distaff Turf Mile, the G2 Alysheba (Friday)…it’ll be one awesome weekend of racing.Of course the only really important race on Saturday is the Virginia Gold Cup .
May 2, 2013 at 02:59 #438195Was looking for a form guide to study & thought I’d check to see if Miss Woodford had posted. Thank you so much!
May 2, 2013 at 22:37 #438320Thanks Miss Woodford for some excellent research.
Alas Attheraces, the self appointed home of US racing in the UK, only seem to be coverin the meetings at Tampa, Belmont, Woodbine, Keeneland (painfully close!), Hawthorne, Atlantic City, Turf Paradise, Indiana Downs, Penn National, Evangeline, Mountaineer and Charles Town!
One would have thought after losing Royal Ascot they would go out of their way to enhance their international coverage by securing rights to show the most historic triple crown series outside of Europe (some may argue the most important series of its kind given the continued level of competition) but it doesn’t seem to be the case.
I may be wrong here but it will be the first time since the new ATR started that the Run For The Roses hasn’t been broadcast live by either ATR or RUK.
It does feel as if ATR don’t seem to be bothered anymore
May 2, 2013 at 23:26 #438324Goldencents
for me.
I think Orb is hugely overrated and doesn’t have such strong credentials as Revoulutionary, Overanalysed and a few others. I like Goldencents as he has demonstrated very strong stamina by finishing his races with plenty left to offer. There are many hold-up horses who will need luck to come through the pack and a much more uncomplicated horse will help.
Normandy Invasion
looks very ungenuine. Could finish in the frame but wouldn’t back to win as he puts his head on one side.
Black Onyx
at a big price is another I might play for a place.

LOL, all of those tracks will have the Kentucky Derby on their Jumbotrons, and won’t be scheduling a race at the same time (Derby day is the biggest day of betting at all racetracks that have simulcasting). Even the Virginia Gold Cup has a Derby viewing party right afterwards for its 40,000-odd spectators. So it’s going to be an awkward hour for ATR.
National Weather Service is saying there’s between a 70% and 90% chance of rain on Saturday. Might play well for Revolutionary and Vyjack.
During today’s races at Churchill Funny Cide and Mine That Bird paraded for the fans. Still handsome as ever! Funny now lives at the KY Horse Park in Lexington, while MTB resides at the Kentucky Derby Museum.

Beware, Andy Beyer picked Goldencents so he’s bound to lose.
I like Black Onyx but the 1 hole is really concerning. The only horse to win from that position in a 20+ horse field was War Admiral, who had enough early speed to get ahead of the cavalry charge. Black Onyx ain’t no War Admiral.
Also re: Orb, he’s not overrated. He’s looked by far the best in works and gallops on the Churchill track this week, has caught EVERYONE’s eye from Steve Haskin to Bob Baffert to Sean Clancy (https://twitter.com/SaratogaSpecial/sta … 48/photo/1). Also his sire is Malibu Moon, whose offspring tend to be excellent mudders. Bred and owned by the legendary Phipps stable, trained by Shug McGaughey, ridden by Joel Rosario,, if there was ever a horse who had the stars aligned for a Derby win it would be Orb.
http://www.kentuckyderby.com/horses/orbMay 3, 2013 at 19:03 #438397Dubai Racing Channel is broadcasting the US feed of the Oaks/Derby races and undercard! Hooray!

May 3, 2013 at 21:59 #43842736-1 longshot Princess of Sylmar wins the Kentucky Oaks!
I hope y’all will stay up late tomorrow night and watch the Derby, if it isn’t on TV there’s that Dubai feed which seems to be really good.

http://www.nickmordin.com/usa.htm
including:
(Apr 3) >>…Orb has more than earned his place in the Kentucky Derby line up. But my feeling is that Itsmyluckyday will turn this form around in the big race….<<<
and
(Apr 16) >>…If Overanalyze does fail to stay the ten furlongs of the Kentucky Derby it’s still possible the winner of the big race may come from the Arkansas Derby. This is because the runner up FRAC DADDY (27-pace adjusted 34) is headed for Churchill Downs and he seems a more likely stayer.
I’ve mentioned Frac Daddy before, noting how he’s got worked up in the preliminaries and shown a tendency to hang towards the running rail. He showed neither of those tendencies here and has probably benefited from having had two previous runs this season.
Frac Daddy stayed on well here to take second. The winner cut across him slightly as he was trying to go for a gap. But he got rolling again soon after so I think the stewards were right to quickly dismiss the trainer’s objection. However the way Frac Daddy was starting to get away from the rest of the field in the last half furlong in a race not run to suit him was meritorious. Off a stronger early pace and over an extra furlong in the Kentucky Derby I think he has a fair chance of winning – certainly a bigger chance than the bookie’s current odds of 50-1 suggest. <<<
May 4, 2013 at 19:54 #438592Point of Entry scratched from the Turf Classic – turf looks to be yielding. Still pouring rain out there.
