Backed
On His Own
in last years race, made eyecatching progress and looked like he’d be involved in finish when falling at Bechers 2nd time.
I’ll be on him again, my one minor worry would be he hasnt been seen since?
January 19, 2013 at 12:31 #426868I wouldn’t be too concerned at the moment Danny, I’m presuming they’re just keeping him fresh/protecting his mark. Probably best to keep checking the entries for him, I’d be surprised if he’s not entered for a hurdle race, or any race after the weights are published. I’ve just checked, and no entries for him at the moment.
The fact he’s favourite on Betfair at the moment at 15.5s, is probably a good sign of his wellbeing.

I backed him as well and reckon he was coasting when he fell. I would have thought this years race will be very much his only real target. I think he could be a similar story to Hedgehunter, taking the race after being a bit unlucky the year before. Hopefully he will be coming to the elbow "on his own"
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
January 30, 2013 at 13:32 #427982Looks like 84 entries, and 4 of mine have made it, for the timebeing, unusual for me
Chuffed to see Call The Police get an entry, really hope they aim him towards it, entered over 2m on Sunday though
Lambro could be an interesting contender too.

January 30, 2013 at 20:09 #428005If you think Katenko will have a chance off a revised mark that will see him near the head of the weights, then you have to consider the horse that beat him at Ascot; Wyck Hill.
Following Saturday’s run Katenko will be giving nearly a stone to Wyck Hill (there was only 1lb difference at Ascot) in their next intended outing at Haydock and given that the National weights will be set before then it should be a similar situation if they both line up at Aintree.
The argument that Katenko is improving is valid but that could equally be said about Wyck Hill.
Out of a dam by Roselier he’s related to previous winners of the race and as they are both currently quoted at 25/1 for Aintree I know where I’d prefer my ante post cash to be, considering that one would race off high 11st and the other off an ideal high 10st.
Small matter of the two Mullins & Wylie horses however – not to mention Join Together.

January 30, 2013 at 20:48 #428009Imperial Commander for the National? Could be interesting, jumps and stays well that’s for sure…
Albertas Run could be another intriguing one, I know Hemmings loves a National winner…
Swing Bill and Calgary Bay would be my others for the shortlist at this stage.
January 30, 2013 at 21:57 #428018From 84 entered I agree with 2 of yours rich.
Albertas Run
50/1,Top weight if he runs!
Calgary Bay
,66/1 would get in with around 10-10
Sunnyhill Boy
,25/1 should have been another 40/1 winner for me!
Beshabar
,33/1 big strong National type!
Alfie Sherrin
33/1 if he gets in!
Tidal Bay
,25/1 He’d love it!
Thats my 6 against the field, all good e/w prices!
Its a one off the Grand National and the feeling of having a couple still standing after Bechers 2nd time round is unique!January 31, 2013 at 09:38 #428037Albertas Run
50/1,Top weight if he runs!
Not sure where you get that from TAPK as Nicholls has already stated that Tidal Bay definitely heads there and he’s rated 3lb superior to Albertas Run – with not much set to change between now and the weights being published.
Tidal Bay could conceivably win a Gold Cup between now and April and if he did would he be allowed to go off at 25/1 ?
Considering he’s an intended runner the best price 25/1 on offer is fantastic value IMO.
Just look how he destroyed the Whitbread field off top weight (admittedly from a considerably lower mark).
Top novice, loses way, then regains form and wins National. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time.
Andrea & Graham Wylie are 6/1 with Betfred to win the race and while that’s only a fair reflection of their combined current best odds on offer they do hold an extremely strong hand;
Prince De Beauchene

Lee I put him at the bottom of my 6 as I’m not so confident he’ll actually run, particularly if the ground was on the faster side of good.I’d love to see there though.A bigger concern is if he did win the Gold Cup it would be another ‘Synchronised’ all over again as he’s a quirky character and more than capable of throwing himself at the fences. If he won the Gold Cup I would retire him on the spot myself!A legend of a horse and one we still haven’t got to the bottom of at the tender age of 12yo……Not many you can say that about!
January 31, 2013 at 16:26 #428058Normally, I leave selecting my four against the field until the weights have come out, but this year I thought I’d get in early and take some tastyish prices. As a result, the shortlist has now been completed – but I reserve the right to change it after the inevitable withdrawals.
Lion Na Bearnai – Did me a favour in the Irish National at a big price and is somewhat overlooked for this. Looks like he should get the trip and is probably only as big as he is because he’s got a small-time trainer.
Always Waining – the best Aintree specialist since Red Rum. Discuss.
Prince De Beauchene – looks like a National horse, always has done. Only reason Ruby was booked to be on On His Own was because this fella got crocked. Worth another go.
Tidal Bay – will no doubt head the weights BUT! Top Weighted horses have been knocking on the door over the last few years, and sooner or later it will open up. This guy has the stamina and the class and – crucially – will come off better for the inevitable weight compression. Oh, and he should force a large chunk of the field into running from out of the handicap if he goes. Get on now if you want to back him.
