That was the aim all along. He’s prepping for the Derby at Ballydoyle and is set to arrive at Churchill on May 2 (making him the last to arrive).

It’s like they’re trying to make him lose. Given how terrible he ran on the Churchill Dirt back in November, you’d think they would want at least a few good gallops on the course. Or any dirt course, for that matter.Graham Motion, who has former Ed McMahon trainee Went the Day Well, is shipping him to Churchill on Wednesday, training Thursday and and will give him a final work on Saturday.
April 24, 2012 at 14:18 #402003I’ll be cheering home Union Rags. Michael Matz won this race with the ill fated Barbaro in 2006, so i hope he can replicate that achievement with his Derby runner if it gets there. He was possibly the top 2y/o, and has ran impressively in his 2 3y/o outings. If he gets a good draw i think he will run well. Many people say there’s no stand out this year. Given that it’s a 20 horse field, you’d think whoever the favourite may be will not be going off a short price. You could make a case for many of these.

I have spent many an hour
studying the fascinating "characters"
that can only be found at the race track.May 3, 2012 at 18:19 #402923Another open year in the Kentucky Derby without any stand out colts. America could do with a outstanding winner.

Actually I (along with many American racing pundits) think this is the best field in quite some time. Since there haven’t been many injuries this year, all of the winners of the major prep races are in (except for Hero of Order and Secret Circle, who don’t have the graded earnings). In fact, 9 of the 13 horses in last year’s Breeders Cup Juvenile are in the Derby. There’s a bunch of hype around several horses in the field. Union Rags, Bodemeister, Hansen, Creative Cause, and Gemologist all look like superstars in the making. Mine That Bird’s 1/2 brother Dullahan is intriguing, although he seems like more of a turf horse. My sentimental pick is of course the Maryland-based Done Talking.

May 3, 2012 at 21:53 #402945Looking forward to the race. A great weekend over the Atlantic for 3yo racing…
A question if I may….
What is the infactuation with 3yo racing in the US & UK for that matter. I don’t understand but would like an insight… please?

Well, with the US horse racing is basically nonexistent in the public eye except for the Kentucky Derby (and to a lesser extent the rest of the Triple Crown). All facets of US racing used to be popular, including the handicaps. The only thing keeping the Derby popular is sheer force of tradition-the race used to be SO important that even now it’s still a major sporting event. The pomp and circumstance surrounding it-mint juleps, silly hats, celebrities galore-matters more than the race itself.
When the only race in the public eye happens to be 3yo-only, it becomes the goal of every (flat) breeder, owner and trainer, to the detriment of the older horse division.
May 5, 2012 at 22:46 #403196I am not often prone to jockey bashing, but Leparoux’s ride on Union Rags just now was truly horrendous. Giving up 15 lengths is one thing but then doing sod all to make up ground until the race was gone and meeting interference as well was unforgiveable. He was 11 lengths off the eventual winner passing the post first time and 6 lengths adrift at the line. Factor in being checked approaching the end of the back straight and he would have been a lot closer if not on top of the winner. Leparoux got him beat at Gulfstream and was terrible tonight. Hopefully connections replace him at Pimlico.

Well, there’s also the fact that Rags just isn’t that good.
May 5, 2012 at 23:53 #403199Ok maybe there is that too! The RUK team mercilessly ripped into mike smith. they reckon bodemeister is the real deal and would have won given a more consistent ride. i checked the secretariat derby first 3/4mile and bodemeister was around 3sec faster by my reckoning so smith was suicidal on the front end.

Bob Baffert
told him to ride it like that
. Get on the front end, out of traffic and let the horse take it from there. Baffert said as much-he said he was very happy with the ride and that the horse ran the best he possibly could.
Bodemeister is the real deal, just not at 10 furlongs.
May 6, 2012 at 10:30 #403238Can’t blame the jockey for riding to instructions but sense seems to dictate that more even sections would’ve given the horse a better chance to win. Stumbled home in 27 seconds I read somewhere.
