I’ve refrained from betting 2 year olds for the classics for a while now, but I was hoping for a big run today from City of Troy and I wasn’t disappointed.

I’ve bet him for The Derby, but im thinking that it might be worth a cover bet at 20-1 here too, although I haven’t yet

Any chance you could edit the title of the thread to make it “2,000 Guineas 2024” so people like me don’t get confused, please?

I think City Of Troy looks a nice prospect with a fabulous trans-Atlantic middle-distance pedigree.

But I couldn’t possibly back a Maiden winner for a Classic unless it absolutely broke the clock and the fact is he didn’t.

Looks sure to go on to better things, though.

City Of Troy looks the one to beat today so took some 10s for this for now as will shorten if he obliges. He may be a 8f and 10f horse next year, dunno about a Justify out of a pacey sort winning a Derby. There may be better bred ones for that to still come out, we’ll see.

The way I read the pedigree it’s got every chance of wanting 1m4f next year.

But don’t blame you, Mike, for betting it for this as it will only get shorter if it wins today.

One word of warning before everyone starts getting carried away: Pinatubo.

He’s showed today that speed I thought he had from his breeding. When AOB was asked if he’s more of a Derby horse than a Guineas horse he said he has a lot of speed. Ryan Moore also just said he has plenty of speed.

Gladders isn’t wrong, but both physique and pedigree suggest to me City Of Troy’s prospects of not being a Pintabubo are decent.

They say all their potential stallions have “plenty of speed” so I’d take that with the usual pinch…

    Impressive though.

Breathtaking. Hard to know what he beat but won on ground he wasn’t in love with. On good ground it will take something special to beat him. Will need to train on but what a prospect. I’d say he’d get 10f so ideal for coolmore as that’s what they are really looking for. A miler /10f champion. It’s early days yet but that was seriously impressive. Only warning is he might be much more forward than others but I’m sure the lads are dreaming about the guineas/st james place and all the 10f group ones next season.

“One word of warning before everyone starts getting carried away: Pinatubo.”

    And

    Too darn hot
    Native trail
    Little Big Bear

    Etc

Horses that are forward enough to be winning so easily at this time of year at 2 often don’t go on to hit the heights expected at 3

It’s the back end 2yo races that are key for the guineas

I’ve a feeling this one will train on. Time will tell but he’s a beautiful mover which I hope becomes a top 3 year old.

The trouble with all these past ‘failures’ is that the bookies don’t factor them into the Guineas price. Nor do they take account much of the 9 months in between, and there’s so little evidence of how the horse’s siblings/half siblings mature … still, hard to blame the bookies when I wouldn’t lay much above 5/2 myself, and well done you guys who backed him before today. Bearing in mind past disappointments, I must say that to this old jumping man’s eye, City Of Troy looked very special in his action and attitude. His next appearance will be in the ‘do not miss’ category.

I believe City Of Troy’s performance today was better than anything the other 2yo’s mentioned above achieved at the equivalent stage of their careers. He was seriously impressive.

Glad is right to sound a warning note but Pinatubo always had the look of a 2yo. I have not seen City Of Troy in the flesh but he looks like he has more scope.

I hope he trains on and wins the Guineas.

His pedigree tells me he will soon want further than a mile at three, but I got sucked in and took 12/1 for the 2,000 Guineas before today’s race and am very happy with that.

Yes, some don’t train on, but a Justify colt out of a Galileo mare must have brighter prospects than most of being just as good, if not better, at three as he already is as a juvenile.

I highlighted him in the Tipping forum after his very taking debut. I had a token bet at 16/1 for the Guineas. I only wish I had properly backed my judgement now!

Unfortunately I did not back him for the Derby. There is not much point getting involved at 4/1 now.

I think he is the most exciting 2yo prospect for a long time. Pinatubo and Little Big Bear had the look of 2yo’s. This horse looks like he will be even better with more time. Justify was not exactly precocious.
