Well done Churchill fans, particularly the ones who were on ante-post last year early doors. That was a nice bit of foresight
Andre Fabre said before the race that the quick ground was the main concern today and it played out like that. The horse was close enough to strike and he came with a good run but was never quite picking them up. It was a good effort and it would be interesting to see how he goes on less slick going.
I got the 1-2-3 but in reverse order of 3-2-1.
Lancaster Bomber ran really well, he loved the ground but I felt he was that bit more exposed compared to some. Eminent was never really allowed to run his own race today. Martyn Meade said he had a plan but I think they foolishly tried to be aggressive on a horse who probably needs further and good ground at best. I think the tactics were a balls up and naive.
Aidan hinted at the Derby and it was no surprise to see Churchill cut for the race. 2/1 seems ridiculous though. I would also say Barney Roy at 7/1 is ridiculous as well. That’s way too short in my opinion.
Dream Castle was silly odds I thought. He ran too free again and could just be an awkward sort. I would have said the Jersey Stakes would be the ideal race for him next, to see if they can find where he should go trip wise.
Pretty pleased with Al Wukair’s effort at 16/1 but no cigar this time.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 6, 2017 at 16:21 #1299695A little bit underwhelming. After all the hype it was something of a bunched finish. Disappointing that Lancaster Bomber didn’t quite make the three. Perhaps if they had been a little less intent on setting the race up for Churchill? Certainly that rail could easily have been worth more than the small margin he was beaten.

May 6, 2017 at 16:30 #1299697Frustrating race – no pace and Lancaster Bomber played the role of spoiler. I suspect there would have been a different winner if someone had supplied a pacemaker.
Churchill was perfectly placed and had the benefit of running in a straight line while others were forced to circumnavigate the Bomber and come from behind off a slow gallop. The way Ballydoyle set today’s race up suggests they’re very nervous about Churchill’s stamina even at a mile, so it seems doubtful he’ll be lining up at Epsom. O’Brien has a handful of other good contenders for that race anyway.
Al Wukair and Barney Roy come out with their reputations enhanced and I’m sure both will fancy their chances of reversing the result in the St James’ Palace. Certainly didn’t look like Al Wukair needed the visor the trainer was threatening.
As for Lancaster Bomber, it speaks volumes for his inferiority that he was a well held fourth despite having all the tactical advantages. He’ll have little business in this company going forward.
May 6, 2017 at 16:57 #1299703I will be most surprised if the Coolmore boys decide against The Derby route for Churchill .
The horse has a good temperament and has the required high cruising speed . He seems very straight forward and always seems to find more when asked .
I think he will line-up for The Derby and what’s more , I think he’ll win .

May 6, 2017 at 17:12 #1299704Churchill was there to be shot at. The pace of the race wasn’t strong enough for some but now Churchill has a run under his belt this season will improve for a faster pace himself, would easily get 10f. Not sure about the Derby myself.

People making excuses for others in the race and saying that they’ll beat him next time would do well to remember that. Part of the reason he was able to win was because he was able to maintain a position closer to the pace than some of his main rivals. If they don’t have the same cruising speed that’s not his fault lol.
May 6, 2017 at 17:39 #1299711Agree Judge, Barney Roy wanted to go where Churchill sat but Churchill’s speed nabbed the plum position and Doyle had to take a pull

May 6, 2017 at 18:34 #1299717I can’t see Churchill going for the Derby. He is so similar in profile to Gleneagles, and his performance today didn’t really suggest he wants much further, although both horses in 2nd and 3rd were well held. AOB is right to point out that not many Galileo’s don’t stay, but Churchill’s dam side is all about speed.
I think his next port of call will be the Irish 2000 Guineas, and then the St. James’ Palace. And maybe he might be stepped up to 10F for the Irish Champion stakes later in the year, as he promises to only improve for the run which many people on here seem to forget.
I think we have a very special horse on our hands.
May 6, 2017 at 18:41 #1299722Well said lost sol 3, churchill doesn`t get true run mile from todays tactics.
and those behind not up to much. not a big fan of doyles, look at first race went too soon on next step.
will be backing that horse next time out.
big race classic assessor at racing post writes connections should have a crack at derby,
mr or mrs assessor stick to writing about shire horses.May 6, 2017 at 18:54 #1299724I am of the opinion that the Derby talk is more as a result of them not actually having a proper Derby horse back home – they should remember back to Dawn Approach who was also a thoroughly professional laid back type who went into meltdown during the race
May 6, 2017 at 19:04 #1299725Thank you Botcy for those words and agree you guys on Churchill i don’t think he go derby and way market going sounds like stick to 1m races.

May 6, 2017 at 19:13 #1299729Well done Darren, a great bit of foresight. Landing a 16/1 winner who went off 11/8 on the day is exceptional punting.
May 6, 2017 at 19:17 #1299730Well done Darren excellent long range pick
May 6, 2017 at 19:22 #1299732Yes well done Darren. I seem to remember the dearly departed Goreisking tipping this up as well
Btw comments that Churchill doesn’t get a strongly run mile are surely ludicrous. However the derby distance still remains debatable of course; although the bookies not taking any chances with their tight 2-1 odds.
