Hello,
Anyone care to share their thoughts on how Lerida won this race with the claimer dropping his whip also?
I think anyone who managed to confidently pick this out and have a bet on at 20’s + has the form book sussed and could potentialy make millions.

I’ve seen most of these trundling/bumbling/ambling/stumbling(deleate as applicable) round in races in Scotland and the North and could have done a hatchet job on all of them!
The five that ran against each other over C+D a couple of weeks back could have finished in any order. That being said Royal Glen and Bog Oak ran more or less to their relative form from that meeting …… for what that’s worth.
There was just a teensy-weensy bit of form in Lerida’s record, not that I paid any attention pre-race!
I do enjoy watching these chases, graysonscolumn would understand if nobody else does, but you won’t often find me putting money down at this level.
I’ve promised to try and cover all chases in Scotland and the North this season, so there will be an account of this particular donkey derby on North’s Notes later!

October 23, 2008 at 20:07 #186042Bad race on heavy going
Unexposed (untried) on soft/heavy going
Form – albeit dubious – when second at Perth over a year ago that would have made him 20lb top-rated
OR in freefall and lowest ever mark despite being 4lbs out the handicap
Second run back after 10 months off
Only a 6yo
Booked jock Cullinane didn’t ride, good claimer R Mania didReasons that may have led to improvement and/or the field underperforming
Stuff happens, formbook will not be thrown out
October 23, 2008 at 20:08 #186043Lerida is a so and so. Used to ride it. If anyone could predict that horse then they would have to be psychic.

I am lumping on Tot O’Whiskey in the 4.15. I had him backed last time and Kinsella gave him a considerate introduction once he over jumped the first ditch. With a more positive ride today he should have no trouble collecting with his main danger None De Sivola withdrawn due to the ground. Of the fancied horses in the race I would say Tot is the most likely to cope with today’s deep ground.
Fingers crossed.
Apparently this wasn’t fancied to get the trip today [INFO]
well done anyway

He does, he does, and he approves!

As Drone suggested, the enlisting of a halfway promising young rider in Ryan Mania may have had a lot to do with the improvement on this occasion.
Lerida had been partnered by Kyle James, Declan McGann and Craig Thompson on his three other runs since being acquired by Muriel Naughton about a year ago, and whilst none of these are complete buffoons in the saddle, I’d certainly rate Mania some way in advance of them already. After Rhys Flint, he’d be my young rider to follow this term.
And for anyone who hasn’t seen the meeting reports as yet and may still be clearing their throats to cry foul, intended rider David Cullinane had a sizeable argument with a tree on the way up to Carlisle this afternoon (thankfully unharmed beyond shock). It was a like-for-better swap rather than a like-for-like one, but entirely above board for all that.

October 23, 2008 at 23:23 #186086Agree about that.
Carlisle should drop the flat and become a full time National Hunt course as the quality has improved so much over the years.

Jeremy’s not the only one Rob. As you have gathered by now Kelso and Carlisle are my racing spiritual homes. Give me a good three mile chase round one of the country tracks to the Breeders Cup any day. Come to thnk ofit give me a good days point to pointing as well. Jeremy will understand that one too.
October 24, 2008 at 14:05 #186152What a shame Carlisle and Kelso are so far away from Enfield, eh, Bob – ah well, at least you’ve got Northaw!

I can only agree with the points made about Carlisle’s growing stock as a chasing venue. You don’t tend to hear of too many trainers or jockeys complaining about the ground there being false, plain horrible or different to the advertised, and pulling their horses out of races en masse as a result; and the bolstering of their November / December programme with intermediate and graduation chases has helped raise the profile yet further.
I’m off up there for the first time in five years a week on Sunday for what will be a fascinating day, whether or not it will ultimately have to be another all-chase fixture. The Coors Cumberland Chase is a staying handicap chase increasing in stature with every renewal, and the intermediate chase will attract a few good second season chasers, I’d have thought;
1:00 Edinburgh Woollen Mill Novices’ Hurdle 4,500.00
1:35 Colin Parker Memorial Intermediate Chase 20,000.00
2:10 Happy Birthday Geoffrey And Graham McLean Handicap Hurdle 5,000.00
2:40 Coors Cumberland Handicap Chase 40,000.00
3:10 Lloyd Volvo XC60 Amateur Riders’ Novices’ Handicap Hurdle 4,000.00
3:45 Azure Catering Novices’ Handicap Chase 6,000.00
4:15 EBF “Junior” Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race 3,500.00Looking forward to it already! (Note to self: may be time to start doing a “number of gratuitous Carlisle references” count as well…

October 24, 2008 at 19:49 #186208Apparently the next three meetings are to continue being Chase only, as the drainage work on the Flat/Hurdle course has yet to be completed.
So you can look forward to an even more fascinating day GC
October 24, 2008 at 21:01 #186226Interesting!
Shame it’s not February already, really – they could have lobbed in a hunters’ chase or two and really made me happy…
