I was delighted this morning to receive a letter from a lovely young chap called Simon Bazalgette (presumably aged about six) who wished to remind me that this year has been a marvellous one for horse racing, and in particular for his company (must be his daddy’s company) called Racing UK. The exact copy of his prose follows (all spelling and grammar are as it appears in the letter, but have been highlighed in order to cause Master Bazalgette maximum embarrassment), apart from the last couple of paragraphs, which I have condensed into a few easy to read words.
Dear Mr *******
Welcome to the October to December edition of the Racing UK Club Pack
So far 2007 has been an exceptional year for racing. The year started with the shocking news of George Washington’s fertility problems, resulting in the premature retirement of the previous year’s star two year old, Holy Roman Emperor, going to stud to take his place. In April, the world’s most famous steeplechase, The Grand National, was won by the 33-1 outsider, Silver Birch. Jim Bolger had the two [b:2q2p2gti][i:2q2p2gti]antipost[/b:2q2p2gti][/i:2q2p2gti] favourites over the winter for both Guineas, in [b:2q2p2gti]Teofilio[/b:2q2p2gti] and Finsceal Beo. He was dealt a cruel blow with an injury preventing Teofilio seeing a racecourse ever again. The 2000 Guineas saw Cockney Rebel show an impressive turn of foot to take the spoils. [b:2q2p2gti]Fisical[/b:2q2p2gti] Beo justified favouritism by taking a scorching victory in a course record breaking time. The high point this year has to be the long awaited Derby win for Frankie, with a stunning [b:2q2p2gti]5th[/b:2q2p2gti] length victory on Authorized. The most emotional memory was the return to classic winning form for 9 time champion trainer Henry Cecil. The Warren Place Master’s 2nd string Light Shift repelled a strong challenge from [b:2q2p2gti]Adien O’Brian’s[/b:2q2p2gti] Peeping [b:2q2p2gti]Form[/b:2q2p2gti]. There was hardly a dry eye in the house when Cecil received a heart felt reception in the [b:2q2p2gti][i:2q2p2gti]parade ring[/b:2q2p2gti][/i:2q2p2gti] after the Oaks. [b:2q2p2gti]Other mentions should also be[/b:2q2p2gti] Notnowcato, Manduro and [b:2q2p2gti]Sahkee’s[/b:2q2p2gti] Secret.
What’s in store for the remainder of 2007 on Racing UK?
The flat season comes to an end at Newmarket with the Autumn double in October of Cambridgeshire and Champions meeting. We can then look forward to the return of familiar faces of the Jump Season. All eyes will be on Kato Star to see if he can repeat his stunning victories of the previous season, in the face of stiff competition from [b:2q2p2gti]horses with the ilk[/b:2q2p2gti] of the highly impressive Denman. Races not to be missed on Racing UK are The Hennessy Gold Cup, The Tingle Creek and the King George at Kempton.
Blah, blah, blah……isn’t Setanta great…….keep sending us lots of money etc, etc…
Yours Sincerely,
Simon Bazalgette

Was this a typed missive, HJ, or was there a generous application of green crayon?
At least we now know who occupies the adjacent padded cell to Jay Hoewood, no?

September 17, 2007 at 21:25 #115393Brilliant Happy Jack – I’d have sworn you were making it up if I hadn’t checked my own copy. I can only imagine how embarrasing it will be for them when it is picked up in the press. Hopefully Eddie the Shoe will go to town on them in his Tattenham Corner piece in the Observer.
September 17, 2007 at 21:29 #115397I am going to CC this post to the Racing Post’s letters department in the morning, David.
Given that Eddie Fremantle is occasionally employed by Racing UK as a guest I wouldn’t have thought that he would be overly rude about them. I hope he is, though, and that every other literate racing scribe will be as well.
September 17, 2007 at 21:37 #115398every other literate racing scribe
That rules me out, then.

September 17, 2007 at 21:42 #115401Don’t put yourself down – you’ve made plenty of improvement recently and I’d even go to say that you’d now almost be in the Mottershead league.
September 17, 2007 at 21:46 #115403Based on that elegant piece of prose I would offer long odds that he actually managed to spell his own last name correctly…
September 17, 2007 at 21:50 #115406PMSL at that. thats quiet unbalivible.
September 17, 2007 at 21:52 #115407I new someone wuold reply liek that Dandan…

Pick a window, son.

September 17, 2007 at 23:45 #115417That is absolutely amazing. Surely a company like Racing UK would have at least 3 or 4 stages of proof reading before something like this was sent to thousands of homes.
Some of the mistakes are even highlighted on a ‘spell check’ in both Microsoft Word and Microsoft Works, so to miss them is bordering on criminal

Brilliant Happy Jack
– I had a lovely giggle over my weetbix this morning.

Well thanks Racing Uk for pointing out the flat season ends at Newmarket?!
I work for a govt department and they had roughly the same number of spelling mistakes with a job advert and when I told them them that the mistakes were few and that they don’t have time to proof read everything.
Part of the course in the modern text speak world obviously the old Setanta typist is not a shall we say a horse racing fan.

Steve,
I’ve heard the Setanta typist is a golf fan, as I recently read that only on Setanta can you see the "US AGP Tour"

September 18, 2007 at 12:07 #115454I guess he must be related to Peter Bazalgette who gave us such TV shows as Bog Brither and Ready Steady Cock.
And probably a descendent of Sir Joseph Bazalgette who designed London’s sewer network. That’s where Simon’s letter needs to go.
