The fence at which Denman made his mistake is catching a lot of horses out. It seems to be suckering horses into taking off too early, which is precisely what Denman did and what Master Minded did last year.
I don’t know how many winners Ruby Walsh has ridden in his career
According to the stats in the Racing Post, 1,599 in Ireland and the UK. There are 1 or 2 more in France, I believe …
February 24, 2009 at 23:29 in reply to: When was the last time a jockey was killed in a uk race #212163Not to forget, too, Sean Cleary, who died in Ireland in November 2003 after a fall in a flat race at Galway.
Istabraq, Sea Pigeon, Arkle, Dessie, Mill Reef, Brigadier Gerard (can’t have one without the other!), Nijinsky, Lester Piggott, Steve Cauthen, Fred Winter (trainer or jockey? Hmm ..), AP McCoy, Vincent O’Brien, Peter O’Sullevan ..
A few to be going on with!!
Well, he’s down to ride three of PFN’s at Wincanton tomorrow – I think that’s probably the first time ina while that he has been on all the stable’s horses at a particular meeting. For the last few weeks the rides not taken by Ruby seem to have been divided out.
Just found this:
Hi Gerald, I believe the photo of Pendil was taken by Ed Byrne. Only problem is that I don’t know where you could get a copy!
Mr Wilson, some of the professional racing photographers have their own websites and there are also agency sites you could try. These are a few examples:
http://www.racingfotos.com/ This is an agency site that also provides prints to the public
Don’t forget your camera, GD!
And here is another refugee from our aborted syndicate visit who’s planning to go this weekend ..
Might see you there HJ ….

.. thread of the year so far
.. in which case, Andrew Hughes’ post has to be far and away post of the year so far ..

Kauto wasn’t, in my view, running to a good deal of his previous form – I don’t know whether that is due to some temporary affliction or what. I do think, though, that the mistake at the third last was a significant one and I do think that it was avoidable.
Should I be setting up Cheltenham ’09 area? You jumps boys are keen.
The membership pack popped through the door weeks ago, so I reckon you’re a bit slow off the mark, Corm ..

Ah, the beloved but reviled mobile ‘phone. It is both a blessing and a curse in my view – on the one hand you can stay in touch, wherever you are (almost), on the other you are expected to be constantly available.
Of course, we did manage perfectly well without the damned things.
I find the UK-based NH trainers, in particular, extraordinarily unadventurous in campaigning their horses – they can’t even get them over to Ireland on a regular basis to compete for the excellent prize money on offer there, let alone over to France!
Paul Nicholls generally has a clearout at this time of year – and I think he alluded to it in his Racing Post column on Saturday.
I don’t recall him running so many in claiming races before, though – the ones who are going usually end up at the Sales. Maybe in the current economic climate they think it’s a more efficient way of doing it, I dunno! I was surprised to see Cerium running in a claiming chase.
I believe Denman is parading at Taunton today (along with Comply Or Die) – that may be why PFN is there
