I’m not a Grisham fan, but I love a good mystery thriller and one that I found completely unputdownable recently was Just One Look by Harlan Coben. The man is a genius!
Are you a big Dean Koontz fan – I quite enjoyed The Taking, but I have to admit my favourite Koontz book is Odd Thomas, I’ll even admit to crying at the end of that one.
For good thrillers, try Greg Iles, Harlan Coben or Jeffrey Deaver. Mark Billingham is another worth reading. I won’t recommend individual titles as it is very rare for any of these to write a disappointing book (in my opinion!)
Greg Iles also wrote an excellent book called Black Cross, set in the Second World War and revolving around an operation to prevent the use of chemical weapons which are being tested in a concentration camp.
I read like a maniac and am currently at a loose end, the book I bought cheaply in Asda (some trash called Best Man by someone Dunn) now languishing in the bin after a mere four chapters… So I will be looking out for tips myself from this post!
Having spent V-Day last year lying on the floor getting drunk, crying and throwing up having been dumped by someone I mistakenly thought was special the night before, I am trying to avoid all couple-y things this year. But have a nice day to all those happy people
I don’t know – I was once mad about a Belgian man and his personal hygiene (not to mention written/spoken English) was better than most British men I have met.
And saying humbug to Valentines day can only be a good thing.
Anyway, I will send as many congratulations and good wishes as an embittered cynic can send…

Oh, I’d forgotten about that Busted song. That one IS bad.
Des’ree is responsible for many more lyric crimes, too. It’s the terrible "forced rhymes" – the reason I hate The Streets with a passion.
How about this Des’ree number, called "It’s Okay":
"Sun is up should be feeling great,
you’re feeling rough got too much on your plate,
a busy day got a lot to do,
a heavy head you think you’ve caught the flu.
Another day you’re late for work,
the shower’s cold you ain’t got no clean shirt.
A cup of tea just might do the trick,
the milk’s gone off by now feeling sick."
Quality.
I’d say pretty much anything by The Streets.
Old Applejack got round twice in the National. Sadly he was later put down after breaking a leg in what was intended to be his last race before retirement, at 13 years old.
I don’t approve of shooting or fishing but would not want to see either banned.
So you hunt with hounds but don’t approve of shooting or fishing? Sorry, but I find that very odd.

This is an interesting subject to debate, and I had many conversations about it with my ex, who was a typical hunting, shooting country boy. Personally I think it’s cruel to chase the creatures until they drop of exhaustion, but I do see the need to control the fox population as their natural predators have waned. I think there must be some other way, though I find it difficult to argue what that way is, as I have no direct expertise. So while I am for a ban, I also have other concerns.
1. What’s going to happen with the fox population – how will it be controlled?
2. What’s going to happen to ex-racehorses, who may well go point-to-pointing or hunting after their career is over? Responsibility for these animals must be taken.
I guess those are the main concerns I think should be addressed before the legislation is formed.
Also don’t like the attitude of some of the yah-boos who get off on the kill, and love the blood lust of the hunt, something very sick about smearing blood on people!
Awaiting the increase in lamping too…
Oh, and I agree, I don’t think jockeys should protest on the course. It would be like me protesting at my workplace – people outside are likely to think it could be the view of the industry in general. They have every right to their opinions, but should protest elsewhere.
