I might be thinking of the wrong horse but didn’t they try to save Mrs Muck. I’m sure I remember something on the beeb about her and how it required a certain amount of time and box rest with no movement, but in the end it didn’t work out.
Personally the saddest for me was hearing on RTE radio news that Triptych had been killed after running into a truck at stud in Kentucky. That she was in foal made it even worse.
Other deaths that affected me were Dark Ivy, Marty’s Step, One Man and Mr Brooks. But I guess any death of a racehorse is sad. I remember Shiloh breaking his leg on the bend in Roscommon last year. Noel Meade had lost a horse in the exact same way the day before and obviously the lad who led him out had been there too because he was asking people how could the same thing happen again and was very upset. Shiloh was a huge horse, in the old NH mould and looked so majestic in the paddock. On the way back to the carpark you could see him standing down the course behind the screens, his leg dangling and looking so forlorn. If I could have one wish it would be that someone could come up with a way to save horses who break their legs. It’s such a desperately sad and undeserved end.
Really sad to hear this. He reminded me so much of Triptych, the horse that got me into racing in the first place, in that he had a mind of his own and though talented would just as easily stop if he felt like it. I thought he was fine, as though pulled up, he seemed to hack back behind the other two. Devastating for a small trainer to lose two horses as good as those in the same season.
Gaspara should have kept that race. It was too confined an area with the screen up to have them jump the hurdle.
Have you watched the race??? By going around Cook came closer to the horse that was injured. There was plenty of room to jump the hurdle. If he had bothered to look why they were waving the flags he would’ve realised this. Indeed if they were going to avoid the hurdle, they would’ve sent them the other side and not where Cook went. This is his 3rd wrong course. Once can be forgiven but if a 28 day ban for the second at Cheltenham hasn’t taught him a lesson then nothing will.
I haven’t bought a racecard in Ireland since they put them up to €3. You can print timeform cards with colours for the price of the ink and paper from betfair for free.
Thanks for letting me know that Craig. I’m in Ireland so don’t get to many English courses, but loved Fontwell when I went there.
It reminds me a bit of Kilbeggan, not for the layout of the track obviously, but for the type of race and the racegoer it attracts. A nice place to spend a summer evening racing.
I’m not a fan of flat racing turf or A/W but there is a place for the A/W. Southwell and Wolves are usually pretty low class, but Lingfield, Kempton and Dundalk have some fair quality races. They are also attracting a higher standard of runner than when they first started.
For instance Gitano Hernando a Gr.1 winner in the US broke his maiden at Wolves and made his seasonal debut this year at Lingfield. Dundalk managed to attract the Gr.1 winning Mastercraftsman last year before his 4th in the BC.
The Friday nights of Dundalk and Wolves work pretty well on ATR, certainly more interesting than the American stuff.
It’s strange but years ago I woke up with the song matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs playing in my head. When I looked at the racing later that day there was a horse running at Newmarket called L S Lowry. I’m not really a believer in dreams or the stars etc but I backed it and it won. I assume I must have seen the name in the entries but I didn’t consciously remember seeing it. Even if it was coincidence I wasn’t complaining.
Sadly it hasn’t happened to me again since

I thought Darren Owen and Ian Bartlett were fine as usual, they are both very competant commentators. Jim McGrath is very poor though, he should retire before his former glories are totally forgotten. Can’t understand why John Hunt is on BBC radio when he would be perfect for the national, a race which is watched by a far larger audience than racing would normally get.
Maybe it’s because I grew up listening to them, but O’Sullevan, Hanmer and Wilson would always be my National team of choice.
The HD broadcast was stunning, I’d willingly pay for ATR HD or RUK HD. It’s so much easier to pick out the horses, their cloth numbers, the mistakes. Not too keen on some of the camera angles but maybe I’m just so used to the old ones. I still haven’t got used to the different camera angles at Fontwell or Kelso and they’ve been changed for ages.
I’m absolutely dreading it. I have a really bad feeling especially about Dream Alliance who was featured on the BBC news today. I think bank to other horses who were featured before it such as Dark Ivy or McKelvey who was followed by the One Show.
Have just seen the replay of Schindlers Hunt on RUK looks horrible on the head on, seemed to walk through the fence. Very sad for a really game little horse who always tried his best, but who didn’t look himself at Cheltenham.
Slightly off topic, but when are the BBC going to get rid of Jim McGrath? He makes more mistakes in one race than Des Scahill in a week, and that takes some doing. There are so many good commentators out there, why do they stick with him.
I love NH racing but I hate Aintree – National, Mildmay, Hurdle and bumpers. I spend the National looking at the fallers hoping that they get up ok. It was so strange watching today, as soon as they went down I knew both were gone and the high camera seemed to make it worse. Sadly over the years I’ve seen many horses, and even worse two jockeys, killed at meetings I’ve attended but that image will live with me forever. The only one I can remember as horrific was Mr Brooks in the Breeders Cup.
Does anyone know how the grey that was pulled up in the bumper was? The Post only mentions that she was pulled up but after Pagan Starprincess I wouldn’t have too much faith in their reporting. She looked to be injured but it is hard to tell as she was out the back and only in the picture for a fleeting moment.
Was at work yesterday and only plussed the BBC races as they have the better camera angles. Devastated to read this, she was one of my favourite horses and The Post website said that she fell 1st but didn’t say that she died. She fell and PU on her other two runs at that damn track. I hate Aintree, not just the national course but the mildmay and hurdle course too. They go too fast there.
