Just Frankie making excuses for his own poor performance.
Having just watched the replay again, it seems to me that Ivan Denisovitch didn’t do anything wrong. Why should Frankie have a right to go where he wants?
Just looked on the Godolphin site. Afrashad has recently had two allowance races in USA the latest in July, both of which he had won, so he was 3 from 3 coming into this race.
There was no kids play in this I’m afraid.
Have just watched it again on video.
The horse was fractious and he’d already given it one or two good slaps with the whip which didn’t look very good in itself. It then shied at a stationary car near the start and O’Neill jumped off and landed on his feet which is when he headbutted the horse.
Believe me, the headbutt was with intent. He was obviously p****d off with the horse. It wasn’t pleasant to watch, the young man obviously needs to curb his temper.
He was cautioned for his use of the whip in the race and the headbutting incident is apparently going to be reviewed later!
I bet the horse was really pleased with the choice of jockey!!
Quote: from ninahagen4 on 8:45 pm on April 14, 2006[br]In the same race as Soeur Fontenail.Let’s hope they both come home safely.
The Castilian isn’t running but Soeur Fontenail is. I’ll be shouting for it!!!
If they both jump the last hurdle together Nina, my lad will happily wave your favourite on, he’s very charitable!!!!
What about Walter’s Destiny at Wincanton yesterday.
!4 years of age, hardly ever misses a Wincanton meeting ( having run there over 30 times ), and runs a storming race to finish third. I wish I had his courage!
The Castilian is engaged at Plumpton on Monday. Would make my day if he ran.
Palacegate Touch, another grey. What is it about grey horses? I remember White Wonder who won races between 1975 – 79. The only racehorse I know that was listed as white not grey.
Burroughhill, I remember seeing Ekbalco killed. such a beautiful horse, full of guts.
Going back to my original thread, Burroughhill has mentioned two of her present favourites, Coolfore Jade and Ateen. I follow racing avidly, yet I struggle to place these horses in my mind, probably like The Castilian for many people. Racing is so much more than just the superstars. I have enjoyed reading every contribution to this thread and many of the horses that have been mentioned have evoked my own personal memories.
I could be dreaming well tonight!
Yes Rory, I do remember Vorvados. There’s a beautiful photo of him in Timeform’s Racehorses of 1984 aged 7.
He was a sprinter who got better and better with age.
He was still running as an entire horse aged 9. You don’t see that very often these days. Another horse that came from out of the clouds.
The Derring Rose race you’re probably referring to was the Colt Car Corinium Hurdle in 1981 at Cheltenham ( maybe the Bula now ), when he did exactly as you described. One of the most astonishing performances I’ve ever seen. I’ve got it on video and even when I watch it now I still can’t believe it’s going to win.
By the way, the sire of Vorvados was The Go – Between, another favourite of mine.
This doesn’t half get you thinking.
Talking of coming from behind, some of the older forumites might remember Knockroe, a grey gelding trained by Peter Nelson in the seventies.
He was often ridden by Lester Piggott and had a fantastic turn of foot when he wanted to use it!
He used to drop himself out and would make up enormous amounts of ground.
A dodgepot hurdler that John Francome used to ride called Derring Rose also sticks in my mind. He couldn’t half run when he wanted to.
In the seventies i went to my home track at Nottingham to see the great Comedy of Errors run and one of the other runners was a horse called Brantridge Farmer who I took a real liking to. I seem to recall that he managed to get Comedy off the bit that day and I always followed him after that.
He wasn’t a very good jumper and he broke blood vessels fairly often but he won lots of races as well.
This thread has made me quite nostalgic and it’s great to see that I’m not the only one who can get quite attached to the horses. I,ve been thumbing through my Timeforms and it has given me a couple of hours of fun.
We own a little pony that my son rides. He’s given good service to my other two kids and there is no way anyone in the family would ever let him be sold. It would cost me a fortune to own racehorses because there is no way I would be able to sell them on even if they were useless!

Thanks for some very interesting replies.
I’ve been following racing ever since the days of Raffingora ( 1969 / 70 ) and there’s usually been a horse most seasons that I’ve taken a shine to. It’s generally a jumper or a flat handicapper because they’re around for longer.
Saratoga Skiddy, Celcius, Pridwell, Vodkatini, Harwell Lad etc might not mean alot to some of you but they’ve given me lots of pleasure!
