Ol’ Man River’s style so far has been to sit in behind and take it up on the run in, so I see no problem with doing that again in the Guineas.

I agree with that but what I can’t fathom was he never even got to mid division he was held up at the back, if he had been midfield he may have stood a small chance f a run as per his previous 2 races but to be at the rear of the field there was almost no chance to get through the field. Its not like he even made a move to get to mid division unless I am wrong he was never in the race. It was likely an education prep for the horse.

I really hope that Found and Together Forever lines up for the Oaks but after missing the 1000 Guineas it doesn’t fill me with confidence and I am more hopeful with Star Of Seville and Beautiful Romance.

Good call Sea Bird I agree I think Christopher Marlow was laid out for the Derby. I am inclined to think that Giovani Canaletto will be there along with Sir Isaac Newton then one another from Highland Reel, Ol Man River, Jamaica, John F Kennedy. Ballydoyle have so many options now I just don’t see them risking their stud fees on Glen Eagles when they don’t have to.

I really hope Tiggy Wiggy does the business but the jury is out as to how she will be on the climb up the hill with her stamina in doubt. I guess the horses I got on at 33’s and 50’s Osaila, Fadhayyil, Qualify and the Queen Nefertiti will all be close at the end. But if I have to pick 1-2-3 Osaila, Fadhayyil, Qualify. On breeding alone the Queen Nefertiti could be anything but not convinced the jockey is up to this. Lucida is the big danger and her jockey K.Manning is a great jockey to have on board her as well as J Bolger trained but only managed 16’s on her as her price had gone and not a lover of Godolphin.

I am happy with Glen Eagles win and was on at 25/1 with William Hill back in August last year and the valued lesson I learnt is if you leave it to the new season the prices on the likely players will plummet if they are any good, so for a few quid you get on at good prices but you feel a right mug when they get pulled as well as I did with Highland Reel whom I was convinced was the better of the pair and I took at 10;s in August with the same bookmaker. The key is to put yourself in the owner and trainers shoes as to the likelihood of matching the horse with the race then watching their prep races. This is I am sure why Steve does so well and congratulations in identifying the 1-2

O’Brien, whose other runner Ol’ Man River never looked comfortable and finished last of the 18 runners,O’Brien, whose other runner Ol’ Man River never looked comfortable and finished last of the 18 runners,

For a horse that raced its first 2 races division to be held up at the back doesn’t make any sense until you understand the Ballydoyle set up. The fact that Glen Eagles gives the breeding line a massive boost for the miler generation as they already have for the mile and half. The money Glen eagles will make for stud duties alone is phenomenal when he retires. If Ol’ Man River had won it wouldn’t have been as lucrative so for Ballydoyle it was important to get Glen Eagles past the post first. Forget prize money its pin money to these guys unlike to some other owners. This is a stud racing business pure and simple. Onto Ol’ Man River he was given a hold up lesson to see if they could teach him to settle in race conditions. Horses in the wild run in packs and it is in the genes that the horse running at the back are the first likely prey for the wild cats & hyhenas. When a horse is galloping it is thinking don’t let me get eaten first so they bunch together, same as a lot of other animals in the wild. So Ol’ Man River was clearly not ridden to his strengths which begs the question why not unless this was not his intended race to win, he raced over good firm ground before and also in an 18 horse race before so this was not his undoing and he wasn’t reported as being unwell afterwards that I know of. Unless someone else have any ideas this was Ol Man River’s prep race for something else.

Happy enough to see Glen Eagles win the race as he figures in a good number of my accumulator bets and I was on at double figures but what happened with Ol’ Man River. Do you think it was the ground that was his undoing or the way he was ridden and therefore given an easy ride without taking to much out of him, perhaps saving him for another day.

I am pleased to have got a 33’s about Fadhayyil and Osaila and 40’s with Irish Rookie and 50’s on Queen Nefertiti but as it has been said it don’t matter what price you get if they don’t line up an the then they have to do the business but if Legatissimo has recovered from her last race and along with the Queen and Fadhayyil
she has good breeding lines but I think my money will be on Osaila ( with Frankie on board and the right breeding/class ) its hard to see her not getting a good ride and being ex RN I hate to say it but I succumbed to the name as well.

I am struggling to see past Glen Eagles with Moheet and Estidhkaar but if Elm Park handles the ground if indeed he lines up then I think he could be in the mix as well. In truth I don’t know and have a few quid on a number of the runners so its a question of sitting back and seeing who comes out top. I am pleased with most of the odds I got on at early on so with exception of the bottom 5 in the betting I have a saver running on it with the best outcome being Estidhkaar and Glen Eagles, Old Man River and Elm Park. But that’s the racing game you pays the money and takes your choice.

Another one gone – Beautiful Romance is to miss Sunday’s Qipco 1000 Guineas at Newmarket following a slight setback.

I also note that Queen Nefertiti is currently with W/Hill at 50’s whilst everyone else is sitting mostly 25’s on breeding alone she has a great chance and surely is worth a nibble at.

It doesn’t makes sense to me the comments in the Racing Post from the O’Brien camp “We’ll decide about Together Forever when we’re deciding about Found, while the plan is for Qualify to run if the ground is no slower than good,” If Found is under the weather and is pulled then they will surely need Together Forever at Newmarket as the weather forecast I hear is rain for this coming week so there is likely to be cut which will not suit Qualify. Together Forever is a proven course and distance winner and has the stamina to last as well as class in her breeding. Likewise for Highland Reel I hope he gets a run but they obviously like Glen Eagles work.

This is what I wrote 18 days back, for me this horse was laid out for this race and has stamina to burn, whether he is good enough to win depends on the run of the race but pleased especially if he gets Frankie on board as well.

Steve how do you rate Christopher Marlow as he has interesting owners Michael Tabor and Rachel Hood, trained by John Gosden and an interesting pedigree. I had 33’s about this horse the other day and was on line betting when a message appeared saying the book price had changed to 25’s which would indicate that either the bookies had a major change of heart or a lot of money had been laid which I suspect may be the latter especially with Michael Tabor’s background. he would be in the know as to how good the O’Brien horses are. The horse has a Galieo line on the dam side and the sires line shows A.P Indy and Seattle Slew so looks like he has stamina as well.

I would agree Steve he looks like he was laid out for the race and has good pedigree breeding as well as interesting owners and having had the experience of Epsom already gives him the edge. I already have had a punt and got the 33’s on him as part of a few doubles and trebles.

I wonder if Richard Hughes is saying that about Kool Kompany after tomorrow after the other Hannon horses go through their trials.
Hughes said: “He’s so tough and he always runs a good solid race. I knew I was getting it easy enough, but when you get rolling here and get running down into that Dip its hard to peg you back.

“Whether he’s a Guineas horse I don’t know. Preferably I’d go to France or Germany or somewhere like that.”

I like Highland Heel especially if R Moore is the jockey but something tells me that Full Mast and the Wow Signal look very interesting at good odds and the dark horse for me would be Hootenanny if he comes over. I will be interested to see how Belardo fares later in the week as on paper it looks very good and has Godolphin and Prince Faisal so has Royal ownership. I have a small bite as the odds were very tempting. For me I like to small bet small-win big which is a formula that has proved successful before, the key for me is getting all the ducks in a row early enough to get a decent price, then crossing fingers they get to the off in good health fit and raring to perform on the day.

Had a nibble early on with Fadhayyil, Fontanelice and Osaila with 33’s on the lot based around the breeding lines but also the likely jocks and owners as this can often be the difference between the cream and the milk as they say the cream always rises to the top. I like Sunset Glow if she comes over and she could be the dark horse in the line up. If Found is ridden by R Moore then she obviously is the one they have to beat with Lucida not far behind but stablemate Together Forever looks to have stamina to burn and has to be the better fancy in the Oaks if she has a top jockey on board.
