Was attending my 2nd Epsom Trainers Open Day yesterday and managed to catch up with some yards I couldn’t get to last year and one was Pat Phelans Ermyn Lodge Stud.
Have to say everyone was made very welcome and the stud was absolutely gorgeous with such a picturesque background, there was plenty of facilities and the horses all very calm after such what was a hectic day.
The girl in the yard managed to bring the yearlings and their mothers over and allowed the public to feed them! It was a fantastic expierance and couldn’t of imaged being that up close and personal with some very important horses for the yard.
Pat Phelan is an improving trainer;
2007 – 1 winner
2008 – 7 winners
2009 – 14 winners
2010 – 11 winners so farI will be keeping an eye on his training as I think he’s a really decent trainer and has the facilities to be supported by much bigger owners in the future
Next year if you haven’t been I’d advise taking the trip down.
You should have come and said hello as I was standing with Ermyn Lodge most of the morning. We also had a winner that afternoon with a two year old, Cocohatchee, at Folkestone.
Just dug out my last weatherbys statement, novembers. I had two rides netting £282.42 in riding fees after deductions for agent (10% of gross earnings rides and percentages) compulsory insurance contributions, valet fees, bank charges, racecourse physio and jock assoc (PJA) subs I banked £149.57.
I have tried without sucess to resign from the PJA, unless your in the top few your opinion is irrelavent and you are forced to toe the line. Weatherbys is without a doubt one of the most expensive banks, our yard apprentice was charged a fiver to have a cheque issued for £44!, and you have to have it.
If I had my time again I would more than likly go for no agent and no valet, the ammount of equipment, washing and drying gear you can buy with what you shell out I dread to think. Luckily for me I have a full time job so now any rides I get are a bonus.
Any pay rise is obviously welcome its just a case of not living beyond your means and been sensible with what you get.
Just got a text this morning from the PJA from tomorrow the fee is £145.44 for a NH ride and £106.55 for a flat ride. You dont get 10% of prizemoney anymore and havnt for a while. The scale ot percentages does slightly alter with the type of race and its value.
A good night no real incidents and quality racing. Have to admit not really that interested in the flat (been a pro jump jockey) but been doing the stalls as a casual for bout 5 yrs now and tonight it was great to get close to some top performers. Hopefully i will get all 5 days at Royal Ascot so that should spark up my enthusiasm again!
Im going and getting paid for the privalidge. Working on the stalls!
The conections of the horse ie trainer, jockey and owner almost certainly have the biggest influence. Even an unfovourably bred animal would attract support with a ‘first-time outer’ and early prices for these races are guesswork and just one persons opinion.
Snobbery exsists to and cheaper horses almost certainly will start at a larger price to more expensive rival. You use to recieve the riding fee on weighing out for a ride. However i think that it has changed and that you have to come under orders at the start.
No ride = no fee, so if you are jocked off at the races by another jockey you get nothing, and if it was your only ride you would incur costs such as travel.
You could give the P2P community a try or failing that Jonjo O’Neill as he has some real pigs who could give you a safe hack around for a circuit.
am failing to detect the sarcasm from my side of the screen!
Ok sorry, Do hope it goes well for you, Last time i ever spoke to a jockey was Colman Sweeney at Aintree, having looked at The Chair with him he turned at me and said
"Do they bypass this on the last circuit"
Was slightly worried as i backed him to win on Montifault in the
FoxhuntersApology accepted.
I’ve said it before on this forum but when a trainer i.e your boss says you cant ride a horse in a certain race "because the owner wants a irish jockey (he came with fewer rides and winners)" or "if you ride it people will know it is sh1t and im trying to sell it" (and i have had numerous other spurrious excuses when a simple "your not good enough" would at least stop trying to shove the blame elsewhere and be more to the point in the trainers eye) it gets disheartening especially when obtaining outside rides and winners was going along well.
I do not in any way think that im owed rides by anyone in racing or that racing owes me a living but im prepared to work my guts out to get some rides again on the track.
Its worth pointing out to many people that a race is only the final 10mins of maybe 10wks work but it is the bit people outside looking in see and nearly all the time the best horse wins regardless of whose on it.

Give it a couple of days and i bet that there could be an annoucement a maybe a bit of a surprise.
PS im ruling myself out, because im no longer ‘a young lad’
Take it Hi Ken (equals Slack) but guess again, Am pretty clued up about how the betting industry works but also about how the product is delivered. Its just one of the many area of our sport that needs looking at.
The problem is about when there is not the maximum field and connections of horses that hav just missed out are up in arms that they are been deprived of a run when there is plenty of time for a reserve system to be implemented
Thats the problem your only looking from the punting point of view and not considering the sporting one at all. Im pretty sure you will get fustrated when your bet comes 4th in a 15 runner handicap and there were 1 or 2 non runners the day before!
If we can have reserves for the national and other ‘big’ races why cant we go the whole hog and have reserves for every race. Working in a yard and seeing horses that constantly get balloted out for a race only when it is run to be chocced full of non runners is fustrating and disheartning especially to the connections of smaller stables and lower grade horses.
Im pretty sure tony forbes claimed him as the joke was Nicky could have had him that day for bout £7K but had to pay bout £55K to get him eventually. I can still rember Nifty and me running out at the first, but it didnt seem to have done him any harm in hindsight. wouldn’t say no to a ride on either at the moment
Surprised everyone at Greystoke I think because he had schooled so well at home. Rose will have lots of ammuniton this year from this place and I would assume ‘Sam’ will be out early on trying to catch the best of the ground. Would hazzard a guess that the greystoke factor in some way influenced his handicap mark up to.
You should have seen him when i first saw him at Ken Hogg’s. Paul Robson certainly picked the right one that day at Uttox. Thought that was more a betfair forum question and i dont want the guvenor accusing me of been a tipster. He is a lovely ride at home and should give Rose a few good days when the goings good!
