Jamie Stier on ATR shortly to talk about the report.
There ya go, the slippery slope, didn’t take long.

Have you actually read through the report ? If so what are the recommendations you don’t like and why ?
The main recommendations of the Review are:
Several changes relating to the structure of and groundwork around fences in the race (which have already been communicated as part of an announcement by Aintree on 15th August 2011, and in some cases are already in progress).
Minimum age of horses eligible to be entered in the race to be increased to seven from six years, and all horses to have previously finished 4th or better in a Steeplechase under Rules of three miles or further
Various elements of pre and post-race procedures to be reviewed and enhanced, including arrangements at the pull-up area
Bypassing of fences to continue, with customised equipment
Improved processes for identifying and responding to weather related risks
More targeted suitability criteria for all the race’s participants, and increased membership for the existing Authority Panel which reviews the suitability of those horses entered in all races over the Grand National fences
Existing raceday veterinary inspections (carried out by Authority Veterinarians) of all horses running in the Grand National to be extended to all races run over the Grand National fences
They have also said that the minimum rating for entrants will be raisefrom 110 to 120.

Interesting stuff Paul. I, like you, am more a fan of the sport than a punter as such. I can see where you are comming from. However,I do feel while I’m not sure that punters should be involved in running the sport, they at least be consulted to some degree. Any sensible business consults it’s customers. Yes, you can always say they don’t have to remain customers but any business needs customers to survive and doesn’t want them just to walk away.
The problem with most punters, and here I mean the general betting shop punters, is they can only see as far as their next bet and not at the long term.
Sod the whip debate. How about getting e w 123 in seven horse races? I am [expletive] sick of getting third. Why can’t the scum bookmaker cough up? It is one of the many c rappy little ******* things that put people off about this sport.
Because the bookies would probably go bust if they did that.
The GN is being sanitized to the point that it will be unrecognisable to all bar the newest of viewers. A very sad end to a ‘national institution’

In fairness I think we should wait and see what they have to say.
Good debate right now in the US on ATR on whip issue
Yes, very interesting. Two of the three Americans on the panel including a rider came out against use of the whip and seemed in favour of the British rules.
After recent events in the poker world, notably the Full Tilt fiasco, I’m not sure too many people would risk doing that now.
Very good performance. Well done.
nobody inside the sport –
nobody
– looks upon this as a
welfare
issue. Time for you to try out the light crop used by our jockeys on your palm, like Greg Wood did.
I wonder if his next experiment will be to run round Cheltenham for three miles in heavy ground wearing a backpack, and then get himself hit to give even more when he is absolutely exhausted ?

Air Force OneAnother tweet from Paul Struthers. I think this sums up a lot of the hysteria for me.
The whip hysteria is 2 much for me tonight. It’s like we’ve killed Bambi, the whole cast of Watership Down and Gary Barlow in one go. G’nite
By sticking with the crude idea of counting strokes (notably absent from the excellent Japanese rules) and introducing ridiculously punitive penalties they’ve merely compounded their original error, and terminally cheesed off the jockeys into the bargain.
I repeat
again
the tweet from Paul Struthers.
These will be my last resets on the subject for tonight but: 1.
Jockeys asked for a strict limit
Pinza – one of the primary reasons the BHA have set out a precise number of srokes is, as I understand it, (perhaps Silvoir, if you’re looking in you could confirm/elaborate) that the jockeys asked for that level of clarity.

I hope betting and attendances fall as this will sour alot of core fans and punters.
I don’t think you mean that because anyone who really loves the sport would hope that the new rules worked out, even if they don’t agree with them. It seems you want it all to fail just so you can say ‘I told you so’.
I don’t like the Tories and didn’t vote for them but, I would rather they did well for the country and proved me wrong for the benefit of everyone.
Instead of having an appeal fund for the jockey who lost out because he broke the rules, how about having a fund for the jockey who came second, and may well have lost his winning percentage because he stuck to the rules.
