Paddy Brennan on Twitter has described RTV Punchestown Coverage as shocking. They have to admit they just have too much racing to show properly on one channel, and telling people to use the RTV Extra just isnt good enough.

RTV more often than not do a £10 for 10 months or similar type of deal, why dont they just realise that at 25 quid a month its too expensive and have a set rate of 10 or even 15 and thats it.

If you think race clashes on RTV are bad just now, wait until the summer, i had a look through the ATR fixture calender for the summer months and the amount on RTV is just impossible to show on the main channel.

On 6th July RTV has a clean sweep of all 9 fixtures. 6 afternoon , 3 evening.

    Bellewstown (Evening) (Turf)
    Beverley (Afternoon) (Turf) (Flat)
    Carlisle (Evening) (Turf) (Flat)
Chelmsford City (Afternoon) (All Weather) (Flat)
    Haydock (Afternoon) (Turf) (Flat)
    Leicester (Afternoon) (Turf) (Flat)
    Naas (Afternoon) (Turf)
    Nottingham (Evening) (Turf) (Flat)
    Sandown (Afternoon) (Turf) (Flat)

You can bet your bottom dollar the irish fixtures will be put into obscurity online no way will they take any precedence over the Eclipse fixture at Sandown. Eddie O’Leary’s ” betting shop fodder coverage ” will be proved right.

As far as Ascot goes as well they still havent said wether Champions Day will be on SSR yet as Ascot dont own those rights, no reason why they shouldnt right enough.

First i’ve seen Floodlight turf racing on SSR today from Toulouse.

Not sure if its something the UK would ever introduce.

Unless RTV were going to launch a 2nd channel aka Racing World like they did years ago with the American Racing, then they had absolutely no need to take the Irish rights other than the fact they thought they would put ATR / SSR out of business.

They simply cannot show all this on one channel and do it justice and just wait until the summer it’ll only get worse.

It was one of the reasons Chester / Bangor switched sides as they knew they would be marginalised on busy Saturdays

And Irish racing has been sold down the river by both SIS and RTV.

@GoldenMiller34 are you employed by RTV? The other day you said SSR was inferior now you are saying ITV are substandard. Two utterly ridiculous statements. The pundits on RTV would send you to sleep and it is far from a polished production.

The following article is really good insight on where Sky intend to take their coverage of racing. And i have absolutely no doubt in a couple of years time when the contracts come up again quite a number of courses will be signing with Sky.

Sky are going to pick and choose which french fixtures they are going to broadcast, presumably when UK are blank days. If you look at this link it tells you towards the bottom they will broadcast over 200 french fixtures.

Not a racing post member so cant read the article, unless someone does a screen shot online of it, but the general gist is correct. SIS have sold irish racing down the river to keep their tie in with RMG going. Apart from the major race days the rest of irish racing is going to be a bit part player, and shunted online where lets face it the viewing figures will be atrocious. Christ cable subscribers cant even access Racing TV Xtra its a major own goal.

The irish courses would have been front and centre of any Sky Sports Racing channel content, and its a damn shame they werent even given a chance to bid for rights as SIS were hell bent on selling them to RMG.

And tbh Irish Racecourses and HRI are to blame at the start of this as well for selling all their picture rights to SIS who in turn can do what they like with them.

Is there an issue with the nightly US racing on Sky Sports Racing? Doesnt seem to be as many tracks getting covered at the moment, and then at 11pm whereas the feed used to continue it then simulcasts with Sky Sports News?

Hopefully Virgin get it in HD quickly, as on the Sky platform the HD pictures are excellent. Graphics and overall production are slick, so i assume it will get better as time goes on as regards tweaks to the programming, not quite sure why they decided to take away the seconds from the time clock right enough on SSR. And the slo mo camera at the finish line is neat, and thats going to be at all SSR courses.

From what im seeing on Twitter thought RTV are having a time of it with split screen and most of Fairyhouse shunted onto nomans lands on RTV extra which cable subscribers are unable to access. On busy days Irish racing is going to play 2nd fiddle to the RTV UK tracks which is what they feared.

There is no doubt ATR production / programming had gone stale and needed a revamp, to wait until 2019 to go to HD is ridiculous in my book, why ATR hasnt gone HD beforehand i dont know and has never been fully explained, was it to do with the irish courses not being HD ready on their side?

To maybe answer SteveH31 i think the reason its not went to Sky Sports Racing just now is maybe due to SIS having the ATR production contract and that tied them into using Milton Keynes… As now Sky have ditched SIS altogether and are producing the channel and Racetech are taking over the on course camera work from SIS as well.

As far as courses moving channels, dont under estimate the politics involved from RMG / Jockey Club who are trying to be the be all and end all as far as UK horse racing is concerned and pressure being put on courses to stay with RMG / RTV.

My hunch is that give it a year or so and courses see how Sky are covering racing and the production values are top notch then they’ll switch. Not the JCR courses that wont happen, but how can the likes of Salisbury, Pontefract, Redcar, Catterick and the 5 scottish tracks think RTV is a better showcase for them than Sky Sports..

Some people are still of the mindset that Sky Sports Racing is just going to be ATR rebadged.

Its not, its going to be radically different , the fact that Sky are producing the channel themselves and not using SIS again as a sub production company tells you that.

Also Sky have 2 ready made lead presenters if they choose to use them, Alex Hammond for one and Jeff Stelling, he used to host all the Sky Winning Post shows years ago and knew his stuff , he doesnt present that much on Sky apart from the Soccer Results shows, i personally feel he would be a dab hand at some of the bigger Sky meetings such as Chester and Ascot.

But we shall have to wait and see how Sky decide to format the programming.

Never understood why when ATR had the Ascot contract. Both ATR & RUK showed Champions Day alongside BBC.

When RUK got the Ascot rights it was RUK and C4 / ITV only.

If British Champions Series had any sense they would probably let all 3 show it.

If you read the article, it wont be part of the sky sports subscription pack, it’ll be available to all sky and cable subscribers as part of their normal channel bundles, exact same as just now.

When this channel becomes Sky Sports Racing and its Sky doing the production rather than SIS it should hopefully improve no end for this type of stuff.
