Channel 4 continued to struggle with it’s viewing figures for racing after pulling in

an average of 600,000 on the opening day

compared to 1 million when the BBC showed it.

Channel 4 claim they are pleased with the figures and say a long programme tends to mean a lower average.

How do you have an "Average" with just one set of results?

I would keep the handicap system but change the structure.

Turn around the 0-80, 0-85 etc and make it minimums by having 80+, 90+, 100+.

Secondly make the bad horses carry the most weight rather than the good ones.

Here we go, another Derby preview.

I guess all this video footage will be repeated tomorrow.

The Oaks is being brushed under the carpet as some Handicap race.

    Disgrace.

Don’t even get me started on the "betting" angle on this show.

I would really lose my ragg.

Speaking of The Oaks, haven’t even seen them discuss the race yet.

Big feature on The Derby mind you.

Car crash telly it really is, couldn’t have put together a more uninspiring team to represent horse racing.

A jumps feature in the middle of an Oaks day production.

You couldn’t make this up, absolute embarrassing.

Another depressing thread trying to bring down people’s enjoyment in a great event.

I don’t see a problem with the current testing rules as they done what the strategy set out to do and that was finding cheats but no one expected to reel in the biggest fish in the sea which pays tremendous compliments to all of those involved in the strategic direction of this testing policy.

My only gripe with the BHA is the atrocious regulatory controls on licences handed to not just new trainers but current trainers. The issue I have in relation to new trainers is it’s too easy to become established, we’re talking animals worth tens of thousands who cost the earth to keep healthy yet all you need is a mickey mouse NVQ and a few years as an assistant to become legitimately accepted among the training ranks.

This has to end here today, we need to put a stop on the easy route into horse racing from trainers, like any other profession a degree should be required at the absolute minimum alongside fit and proper person checks whilst current trainers must sit tests every 18-32 months on physiological, pharmacological and external environmental trends impacting upon their business to ensure they are aware of the dangers.

I don’t subscribe to the idea that losing Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum from racing would be a tragic loss to the sport albeit there would be a period of re-adjustment but British Racing would equally survive in the long run and may even be better off.

What would actually happen in the event? We wouldn’t exactly lose the best bloodlines in the business as it’s widely recognised for a number of years now that Sheikh Hamdan has rarely bred a classic winning colt if any in consistent succession.

I think the markets would be more settled with prices dropping to natural levels that represent the product’s actual value in itself not the mythical fantasy purchase that have long burgeoned the sales rings. Yes, breeders may face a loss in the view of landing that big valuation from the Maktoum family but without their presence I do believe there would be exponential growth in not only number of purchasers but self-made businesses where the dreams of owning a stallion can be realized by your middle-upper class man rather than this supermarket dominance that suffocates the high street as producers are forced to sell to them because they offer the best money and buyers are forced to purchase their progeny because other stallion options are thin on the ground.

You have to look at Meydan in retrospect here too, I don’t believe it has been a success despite the visionary beauty that beholds a 4 week build up to one of the richest racing carnivals on planet earth which has largely been devoid of not only the highest European talents but also those from abroad who seek to maintain their seasonal preferences over a bate worth millions which epitomises that money isn’t everything when personal traditions and perceptions are taken into account.

Mahmood Al Zarooni come across as a nice person when ever I got the chance to hear him speak and I don’t think there’s anything malicious in this at all.

Hope he comes out of this with his training career still in tact, lesson learnt and move on.
