Although I missed the racing yesterday afternoon (Sprinter Sacre et al), I was horrified to learn on a later programme, a Winterwatch special, about the ’63 winter and there was no racing for about 2 months from Boxing Day onwards. One bookies resorted to racing mice in his shop. Wonder what the H&S guys would think of that nowadays. How would we cope if this winter was repeated :?:

£1113 from a 50p lucky 15 at Hexham in 2007. Graham Lee had 3 of the winners. Just about a year later, John Smiths Cup day at York I had the first 4 winners which would have paid over £7,000 for a 50p lucky, but silly me split the bet up between the 2 or 3 televised meetings on C4 so ended up wining about £400.

A mate this year after losing for most of the week at the Listowel Festival won approximately £1,400 on a combination T/C, F/C, EW bet costing about £15 on the Cartoon Horseracing

It depends on the attitude of the horse a lot like human beings. I know if I was whipped I would tell the jockey where to go. The same thing applies except horses can’t talk

Sorry possibly Hayley Turner excepted

Even the RSPCA says the GN should not be banned, just made safer. Although this may be for publicity reasons as much as anything

Not so sure about Synchronised. I didn’t think he should run but surely Jonjo must have tried him over the GN fences at home and been happy enough to run him. I think any doubts and he would have pulled the plug. You don’t take risks like that with a Gold Cup winner :?

Is Neptune Collonges going to run?

I could see him running into a place if he does.

    Dont you mean plodding?

Aye he plodded to 2 Punchestown Gold Cups, a Gold Cup 3rd behind Denman and Kauto and recently to within a head of Giles Cross giving a stone away

Well done on Neptune plodding to another win  Big shock on Synchronised. I thought it was a mistake running him but surely can’t blame Jonjo for this unfortunate accident

I very rarely back ante post. But what is the normal timescale for NRNB? I would have thought you would have still been able to bet NRNB for the time it took you to get to Brighton (and back maybe???). Unless you was walking or coming over from NZ or Oz :?

Well thanks for all your comments. I have now narrowed it down to half the field

Talking through my pocket but I thought this was a great race. Certainly made it a more interesting afternoon’s racing for me on my Donny 50p lucky 15. Just a shame all my other horses in the bet were last or near last  Never had a 50/1 or bigger before which actually equated to 150/1 on the "One Winner, Treble the Odds" slip

Surely must be another Golden Miller as THE Golden Miller did not run post-war

Treasure Beach didn’t really impress me at Listowel (finished 2nd) although young O’Brien rode like a ****

Difficult to single one out, but the type of bet that satisfies most is the one that jumps off the page, is value, and wins

i.e those that render analysis of the field and tissue compilation all but redundant

Oh yes, I had one of them at Listowel. I told my mate why Essex would win and then we both went and backed something else

The BBC have cut down their Arc coverage to just 90 mins this Sunday (and probably no red button coverage as back up). I’m sure in recent years they gave us well over 3 hours of coverage.

I know they covered the abbaye ‘non-race’ on terrestrial a couple of years back. Last year I had to watch it in the bookies :(

Just thought of another little bet I had, John Smiths Cup Day 2008. First 4 winners at York

    Blue Spinnaker 12/1
    Zomerlust 4/1
    Flying Clarets 12/1
    Yellowstone 10/1

Would have paid over £7K for a 50p lucky 15. Unfortunately I didn’t have them in the same bet. Blyhe Knight (11/2) also won for me that day. Luckily I didn’t do the Scoop 6 as I would have been the only 1 going for about £175K on the last race. Selection finished about 10th.

Won about £400 that day. Borderlescott was also touched off on the line by Green Manalishi costing me another £400

I guess the Beeb (if they have the rights to this meeting) will have to promise to screen on BBC1 to gain a maximum audience rather than hiding it away on 2 and also advertise the meeting to death between progs for about 2 weeks beforehand. Then the figures may reach 50% of their projections
