It may have been a slow start to the service however anyone who has persevered where duly rewarded yesterday when the "NAP OF THE MONTH"; Nictory Vote, duly sluiced in by 3 3/4lengths thwarting odds on favourite backers of Ronaldo Des Mottes. I had heard good things about this horse and that is why i ensured to get the post on 2 hours earlier than usual. Recommended as a 3 point win the advised 5/2 was cut into 9/4 just before the off leaving a healthy profit of £50. The second string tip also obliged at much shorter odds however winners are important at this time of year and I’m sure i have one today to keep the ball rolling, it should be up within the hour….

    BIG BET TODAY…

Messrs Nicholls and Walsh look set for a great day at Taunton and the NAP OF THE MONTH comes in the 2nd race at 2.50. It was a few months back that a friend of mine in the West Country informed me of a new French recruit of Nicholls’, Nictory Vote, which he described as "the business" began to impress and he is strongly tipped to make a winning debut here today! Get on and take a price early!

Also of interest is Super Formen for Nicholls and Walsh in the opening Beginners’ Chase. Tipped last week in this section to make a winning chasing debut, Super Formen returned a slightly disappointing 2nd after being rather tentative at a few of the obstacles. He is however regarded as banker status here today at Taunton with that experience behind him and with Ruby taking over in the saddle. He runs in the opener and once again it is a small field but with far less quality than what he came up against last week with the biggest danger looking to be Stumped who could be of interest for forecast punters.

    Recommendation

    2.50 Taunton
    Nictory Vote
    5/2 (Bet365, VCBet, Paddy Power)
    3 points Win

    2.20 Taunton
    Super Formen
    1/2 (Paddy Power)
    2 points win

Course specialist Royal Mackintosh looks a great bet to get the week off to the flyer. Brian Harding’s mount loves a good slog through the mud and all of his 3 wins have come at this northern venue. He looks a good thing in the penultimate event on the card.

For all the bucket and sand lovers Wolverhampton hosts a typical all-weather card marking the return of Jamie Spencer to the saddle. He looks to have solid claims in the final race with Singleb but the one that takes my fancy is Red Cape. He ran a great race last time and off a similar mark in a weaker race here he should take all the beating at a tasty enough price.

Over in Ireland Catch Me is taken to score comfortably in the feature race on the card at 2.45.

    Recommendation

    2.45 Navan
    Catch Me
    4/7 (Betfred)
    3 points Win

    4.30 Carlisle
    Royal Mackintosh
    3/1 (Ladbrokes)
    2 points Win

    5.40 Wolverhampton
    Red Cape
7/2 (Boylesports, Betfred, VC Bet, SkyBet, Ladbrokes, William Hill)
    2 points Win

With no obvious pace in the race, this could very easily turn into a messy tactical affair. This would be of greatest hindrance to Teasing who needs a strong pace to chase. Carnivore likes to be held up so this won’t be ideal however it could help him last out over the extra furlong he encounters here today. Veronica’s Way looks poor, Bobski doesn’t look like he wants to win. Dicoh, the likely favourite, has joined an in-form yard however he was a tricky ride last time and could use a lot of energy pulling hard early. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Branca try and make his own pace on this and I think the one to be on is Garden Party who travelled great when caught close home at Wolverhampton over a furlong further. He never enjoyed Southwell’s fibresand last time, and even though he isn’t obviously well treated at the weights he could prove the answer in a tricky contest for the in-form Harris and reliable Catlin.

    Recommendation

    2.55 Wolverhampton
    Garden Party
    2points Each Way

Yesterday’s main selection came a slightly disappointing 2nd after apparently travelling best of the three principals turning for home. The double produced the customary one in and one out – Epic Oddyssey advised at 11/10 returned a comfortable winner at 8/13. Wolverhampton is Friday’s port of call.

We’ve been starved of jumps action all week since McCoy hit the magical 3000 winners over jumps in bottomless conditions at Plumpton on Monday, but today its back. Chepstow survived its morning inspection and hosts a very good quality card with several top yards represented throughout. It could turn out to be a great day for Messrs Nicholls and Thomas and i think their best chance comes in the second race at 2.10. The bet365.com Novices’ Chase over 2m1/2f has attracted 6 runners, 4 of which could prove hard to seperate in the race itself, but I’d take Super Formen to be the collector of the £6,505 prize for the winner. Rated second best out of these over hurdles, as early as last summer Nicholls’ comments on the horse where that he would always make a much better chaser and he looks to have solid claims to make a winning debut in this code here today. Conditions are set to be very testing but that should prove to be a help instead of hinderance as his only win came on heavy ground and around this course. His last visit here on his penultimate run was most encouraging where he was beaten less than 5 lengths by Champion Hurdle hope Crack Away Jack and less than 2 lengths by Alan King’s Squadron into 3rd. Last time out he never stayed the 2m5f trip around Cheltenham and the drop back to near minimum seems sensible. This is contrary to what appears on form to be his main danger, Jaunty Flight. He was in warm order for his chasing debut on his reappearance and needed next to all of the 2m4f trip to see off the relentless challenge of Fit To Drive. Although he has won on both soft and heavy ground he has never won at a shorter distance than 2m4f and I can’t see him breaking that trend against this useful field. Of the others, Or Bleu has won 2 of his last 3 starts, the first over hurdles and the second over fences, over distances of 2m3f and 2m41/2f, but if Super Formen jumps- which most Nicholls runners do brilliantly – Or Bleu would have 13lb to make up with Nicholls’ charge from their hurdles form. The only other apparent danger to Super Formen comes in the form of Andrew Turnell’s Jigsaw Dancer. This 7 year old gelding does seem to be improving and appears to have his ideal conditions but he could struggle to give 8lb to the selection and is taken on this time.

Of the two all weather meetings, United Nations in the 1.50 Southwell and Epic Odyssey in the 3.30 Kempton, look to stand out on their form in their respective contests and should have no real trouble in both coming through triumphant.

    Recommendation

    2.10 Chepstow
    Super Formen
    15/8 (Coral, bet365)
    2 points Win

    1.50 Southwell
    United Nations
10/11 (Ladbrokes, Coral, VC Bet, Stan James)
    3.30 Kempton
    Epic Odyssey
    11/10 (Paddy Power)
    1 points Win Double

FOLLOWERS HIT THE CROSSBAR FOR 2ND TIME RUNNING

Today’s solitary selection was a confident call with the expected hectic pace up front perfect for Marmooq’s hold up and pounce late style of running. All seemed to be great after a good exit from the stalls there was an early fight for the lead before Martin Dwyer made the race winning move on Kipchak by taking a hold and slowing the pace with still over 3/4mile remaining. From then on in it disappointingly turned into a dreaded tactical affair and Marmooq ran a stormer to finish an ever closing 1/2length behind at the line under nightmare conditions. Don’t give up hope on this one though and a strong pace over 1mile seems perfect and will definitely be worth an investment if the handicapper doesn’t punish him, a return to Kempton may also be beneficial. Look on around midday for tomorrow’s message.

    Result

    3.40 Lingfield
    Marmooq 2nd
    6/1
(Shake On It the unplaced 7/2Favourite)

Racingpost – "Held up in rear, headway on outside 2f out, ridden to dispute 2nd over 1f out, ran on"

Once again the weather has left just the two low quality all-weather cards at Lingfield and Kempton. The consequences of the recent awful weather really is becoming frustrating with good quality jumps action being abandoned up and down the country and more threats for this weekend’s action. The intended card up at Musselburgh today had some good level races staged and the undoubted bet of the day came in the form of Howard Johnson’s Woody Waller. This horse was sent off joint favourite for his second run over hurdles after apparently showing marked improvement at home after a satisfactory debut and it is a credit to him that he managed to get within 3 3/4 lengths of Alan King’s so called "top juvenile hurdler" Walkon, that horse has since boosted the form no end. You have to take into account Walkon has improved significantly since then, but Woody Waller’s easy victory next time out has also been boosted by a comfortable subsequent success by the runner-up. Even though he doesn’t seem to possess the class to succeed at Cheltenham, the fact that Howard Johnson gave him an entry into the Triumphe Hurdle shows the regard this one is held in at home and he should be definitely followed in similar events in the North as he was set to line-up in today.

I’ll admit that a flick through today’s two surviving cards doesn’t exactly get the heart racing however patience should be rewarded as the in-form Marmooq looks set to play a big part in the Three Bridges Handicap at Lingfield, schedueled for 3.40pm. This horse has been flying home at the death in his last 3 runs, allbeit getting up to win in the first one, over 7furlongs and today he has finally got the step-up in trip to a mile he has been crying out for. He can sometimes get outpaced in his races before staying on and he relies upon a fast pace being set up front, which he should get here today. With strong front runners Kipchak and Saviour Sand both in the line up and Nikki Bea who loves to prominently chase a pace, they should help ensure they go a good clip. The home straight at Lingfield is difficult enough to lead into and go on to win anyway, nevermind when you have been challenged hard up front for the previous 6 furlongs, and this looks left to one staying on late in the day to swoop round the outside and hopefully win going away. Marmooq should be the one to do this and with Ian Mongan retaining his place in the saddle, trust him to time it perfectly and earn us a nice payout on a horse he know’s better than anybody.

    Recommendation

    3.40 Lingfield
    Marmooq
    5/1 (Bluesquare, 888Sport)
    2 points Win

Today’s selection finished a clear 2nd, allbeit never really troubling the winner after making stylish headway from 3furlongs out. Recommended at 13/2, King’s Majesty returned at 11/2 with Gary Moore’s Dundry the gambled on unplaced 10/11 favourite.

I hope to have a selection for you tomorrow by the time of the first race.

With today’s solitary jumps fixture at Folkestone conceding inevitable defeat against the appalling recent weather we are left with just two all-weather meetings to attempt to phathom out. It is therefore most definitely a day for sensible stakes.
The bet of the day comes from Lingfield in the Turners Hill Handicap over 1mile5f at 4.10pm. The Surrey venue has proved to be a happy hunting ground for King’s Majesty who boasts form figures of 2113 at the track. After being held up out the back of the field at Lingfield on his most recent appearance, King’s Majesty was forced 5 wide turning into the straight but still knuckled down to run on a creditable 3rd in a similarly weak contest. With Shane Kelly taking over from Andrew Elliot and being able to run off the same mark (some 46lb lower than his mark over hurdles), King’s Majesty looks to have a solid chance in an open looking heat.

    Recommendation

    4.10 Lingfield
    King’s Majesty
    13/2 (SkyBet, Bet365, Victor Chandler)
    1 point Each Way

Tony McCoy in my opinion is simply the greatest jump jockey ever to grace our sport. His determination and drive is incomparable to any before him, his strength and skill is superior to his colleagues and also, and in some ways more importantly, he is a genuine person, giving his all at something he loves and lives to do, who hasn’t allowed his personality to change since he struck success at such a young age. A role model for all aspiring jockeys, a great ambassador for our sport … a true champion!

Quinola Des Obeaux for me too. I was interested looking back through the stables tours published in the Racing Post prior to Christmas to read that back then Willie Mullins spoke of Quel Espirit as his potential main bumper hope. He won well recently but the performance of Quinola Des Obeaux is the best of the Mullins candidates seen so far, allbeit who knows what beast he could have lurking in his yard ready to strike shortly. Of the others representing other stables, Dunguib has probably been the most impressive and with his winning form already franked, he looks sure to go well. It often pays to stick with the Irish in this contest so I think i will leave it at that.

The RSA is ultimately known for being a slog, which was won impressively last year by Albertas Run. As ever, a Paul Nicholls inmate dominates the head of the market, in this case being represented by What A Friend (general 7/1Fav) and while he boasts good solid form and seems to have really taken to chasing I’m of the opinion that Willie Mullins holds the key. Cooldine has always looked a classy chaser in the making and has so far been campaigned over the minimum trip over fences in hot graded races over in Ireland contested by the like of Nicholls’ Arkle favourite Tatenen. Cooldine promises to be a different horse when upped in trip and should have a great chance. His jumping has been put under the ultimate test running in fast and furious graded 2 mile chases in his native Ireland and he has developed such a speed of getting from one side to another that come the RSA Chase the other runners won’t be able to cope, and coming down the hill to the third last when the pace increases there won’t be any worries for this one. I see he is entered in Ireland this week over a more suitable trip of 2mile5, I wholly expect him to take this on the way to Cheltenham glory with the latter likely to prove his optimum trip.

Neptune Collonges is banker material to gain revenge over Exotic Dancer and take this comfortably before taking his deserved place in the Gold Cup.
