very much my thoughts – why go novice chasing when you have Grands Crus?
Probably not quite in that one’s league, but too early to say that definitively. After this race last year I wouldn’t have thought GC could land a blow with Big Buck’s but he ran him close ultimately. The clincher for me will be what shape BB comes back in. If he shows next week and at Ascot next month that he’s as good as ever then so be it, Dynaste can still pick up a decent pot for 2nd in the World Hurdle. If age is catching up with him (probably not a good day to be speculating on that)n then he’s right there IMO. Oscar Whiskey is a very good horse but probably won’t see out 3m. Can’t see what else could seriously challenge him at this stage (maybe either of the Henderson horses who ran well in 3m novice hurdles last year but I think both are off chasing)
fantastic to hear a first hand account. I just didn’t think it was possible if I’m honest – if I did, there’s no doubt I’d have made the effort to get up there. The gambling is very much secondary to me these days (not always the case, not by a long shot) so it seems a bit perverse in hindsight that I wasn’t prepared to make the expense to get to and from Haydock from Somerset to watch today’s race, a sum that I’d happily have gambled away several times over some years ago on various no-mark midweek sand races.
As has been alluded to previously on this thread, a huge amount of credit must go to Paul Nicholls and his team. I’ll be the first to admit I’ve been calling for his retirement at various stages over the last few years (most obviously after P’town this year), more out of not wanting to see a great horse degrade himself than anything else. But as with Denman and, to a lesser extent, Masterminded the way he can bring these fantastic horses back from what most perceive to be a dead end is remarkable. I’ve been over to the Ditcheat yard several times over the years as it’s only 15 mins from me but it’s much harder to access these days for obvious reason I suppose. It’s terrific how accessible they make they superstars and it’s great for the sport. All that’s by the by really and again I’m rambling (kauto star wins against the odds + wine = me talking boll*cks) but this whole thing has cheered me up no end.
I don’t really think for a second he can or will win the KG and I’d rather tye bypassed it for one last GC stint personally. But the big man clearly knows best so I’ll trust his judgement. (quick word also for David Pipe, what a terrific job he’s doing with less of an armoury than the likes of Nicholls and Henderson. He’ll be top of the trainers table within the next 3 or 4 years, I’ve little doubt)
first post here – had an account a few years ago but after a few futile attempts at signing in and trying to remember an age-old password decided a new account was the way forward.
I had to, just had to, say something about this. I have NEVER felt like this after a seeing a horse win, Dessie et al included. Just fantastic, I really can’t think of much else to say. For such a classy horse to have such guts and heart is something we hardly ever see. One of THE great moments in NH racing, certainly in my lifetime.
I had my £10 bet this morning, as I do on a Saturday – Grandouet/Oscar Whiskey/Long Run win treble, and I’m not sure I’ve ever felt so confident of collecting on a bet like that. When OW fell I was initially disappointed but it then gave me the chance to watch the race wanting KS to win, which wouldn’t have been the case otherwise. In hindsight, it wouldn’t have made a jot of difference – £70 or whatever I’d have won was never going to make or break me and I’m sure I’d have cheered Kauto all the way home regardless.
I know I’m rambling – I just don’t have another outlet. My wife and boys don’t give two hoots about racing. I just want to tell the world that Kauto Star is a mother trucking legend, I’ll never see another one like him and I’m fairly sure watching a horse win will never make me feel like this again. Love him, love him, love him
I’ve no doubt Long Run will go on and retain his KG and Gold Cup, but this was Kauto’s day. Unbelievable
