Have filled out the survey Emily, hope it goes well for you.
Thanks so much! Only 3 participants off being completed so hoping to achieve that!
So happy with the response I have had on the forum, Thank you all :)
emily i filled the survey in i am in ireland my local racecourse is cork whenever there is an upcomming meeting its blasted all over the radio twitter etc big race meetings are advertised on the main tv channels when ever i go to a meeting there seems to be a good crowd dont know if its to do with less meetings people look forward to it more as in britain its on tap everyday also upto now the rowdy types who in all honestly just go for a p**** up havent invaded to the extent i see when watching british racing i know i will get called for this but why not have an odd meeting booze free how many parents would bring children and possably future fans get them young would be my way of going about it if your not a fan of a sport no amount of advetising will persude you !!!!
Very valid point and I have to partly agree with you!
Thanks for filling out my survey, It is appreciated!
Ben – I think I have grasped your sense of humour and ‘banter’. You are forgiven!
I am only 7 participants off achieving my target which I am so grateful for as believe a lot of the responses have been gained for the forum so, thank you all!
Best of luck with the dissertation Emily, will you be attempting to determine a control to measure the effect of social media on attendance against ?
Presumably there will be a relationship between the standard of meeting (champions weekend) and the effect of social media combined with other sources (print / radio / youtube / television) resulting in increased public interaction / attendance. Any data Ascot / Newmarket could provide might be worth looking into considering british champions weekend has been creating video content throughout the year for their events that should be easy to measure public interaction with, any snapchat data should also be easy for them to gather viewer figures / public interaction fromThank you, within my questions I have considered other methods including those which you have mentioned so will compare the social media responses to those.
The data I am gaining from racecourses is through a separate survey which is sent directly to the marketing team, I am not focusing on gaining specific information on big race meetings however this will give me something to talk about in my discussion element rather than in the data collection.Good to see you still here, Emily. You won’t find a friendlier racing forum. I think the original exchange with Ben was one of those unfortunate results of both posters being unfamiliar with each other’s ‘style’.
Ben’s droll point did resonate with me. We get about one student a month here with Please Help! post leading to surveys that are often poorly structured and sometimes so confusing you need to quit part way through. I cannot recall one of the OPs – besides you – who ever came back to respond to comments or suggestions.
Anyway, good to have you here. I hope you stay with us. We could do with some common sense

Kind words, Thank You.
I’m still a bit puzzled by the premise of this thread, it’s already been pointed that there was a sharp increase in attendances in 2015 with an almost record total yet there are supposedly, according to this thread many courses concerned about decreasing attendances in the last couple of years.
Any chance of garnishing us with a few facts and figures Emily and which are these “many” courses?
I will private message you (When i work out how to do that) if you like of the reasoning behind my dissertation if you are genuinely interested :)
If Emily had replied with an insult to me it’d actually make me smile, either because it shows she’s game for a fight (which I always respect and would have no intention of getting into an internet war with her) or because it shows she knows I’m just taking the piss and has that sense of humour too.
But when someone gets offended by something I consider petty, it makes me poke that stick a tiny bit harder. But again, this isn’t done in a hurtful or harmful way, more of a jokey/banter way, as said though it probably doesn’t come across that way when read online.
Ben, I question what you do in your spare time. It is not in my nature to be insulting and certainly not via a racing forum which was used to genuinely ask for help towards my dissertation. It was not meant to offend anyone just for those who wanted to help.
I’ve tweeted the link – let’s hope some respond !
Fab! Thank you so much
Hi all who have commented. I think there might be a little confusion on my survey, there is no right or wrong answer to the survey I just would like responses from the racing population whether you use social media or not. I am not stating that social media is the key to increasing racecourse attendances it is more an investigation as to whether or not it does influence people attending the races. In actual fact it would seem that the traditional methods of marketing i.e word of mouth is one of the more effective methods within the racing industry rather than social media.
I am not sure I agree with the idea of people who follow social media are those who don’t have any idea or appreciation for racing, as most trainers and jockeys follow all courses on social media for the convenience of gaining information quickly.
Thanks to everyone for completing.
I’m considering the past couple of years and have analysed each racecourse alongside the data provided by the levy board. Attendances are a worry for many courses.
Thanks again for completing, even if you don’t use social media your still really helping – thats the whole point of my research. Social media is a huge topic to discuss, its not a simple discussion on racecourse attendances so I am really enjoying collecting my data and gaining opinions/facts from you all and from racecourses in a separate research survey.
I take the point of not having the option to say a couple of times a year so perhaps that is something to rectify in the future.
Thank you to you all for participating.
Sadly, I agree with the point that racing is turning into a day off boozy social events rather than appreciating racing at its finest. I feel Hexham is one of few that attracts racegoers who genuinely love the sport and not just to get drunk!!
As for the point of adding the other questions to my survey, it is mainly for my dissertation and having too many questions tends to put people off as too consuming and needed to keep questions focused on my specific question which is the influence of social media.
The purposes of the survey is mainly for my dissertation whilst offering advice from data I receive to the racecourses, not to aim to improve racing and tackle large scale issues.
There is absolutely no denying that without the betting sector, the consequences would be damaging for the whole horse racing industry and it simply would not be able to function. However, there are small things that can be done to increase racecourse attendances and it is those little things that racecourses can improve to get the punters in.
No doom and gloom about your comment, I just dislike the comment I received previously about being a ‘randomer’ and the negative comments.
Thank you so much!
Hi Ben, Firstly thank you very much for completing my survey I really appreciate it.
However, I find it interesting/sad that you feel the need to address me as a ‘randomer’ yet know nothing about my personal involvement in racing but I will leave that one with you.
I can appreciate the life of a punter may well be a struggle, but so is the life of an owner, breeder, trainer and with decreasing racecourse attendances this all has a knock on effect reducing the funds available to racecourses to constantly make improvements, raise the prize fund and attract owners to races which all has a negative impact to everyone involved in the industry.
Once again, thanks for spending time to complete my survey.
Emily
