I can remember NTD riding just thought he was some posh toff with a name like that LOL
With the death of Kennel Hill it has got me thinking about other personal sad moments in racing.
It
s funny because although you don
t have a personal attachment to these horses you still invest time and energy following them .Ones that come to mind for me are :
Grey Sombrero ,i was only 9 at the time but had remembered him winning a race by miles way before the National so had my dad put my 5p each way on him .
Until this point i didn`t realise that horses got killed racing and to be told on the way home from school the next day what had happened haunted me for years.Griffins Bar, had got on this horse at 200/1 for the becher chase the previous November i’d been telling anyone that would listen that he was an Aintree natural and jumping the last i thought i was to be vindicated .
I waited all through the winter and onto the National convinced i was going to see the biggest turn up ever in the race.
I can still remember the shots on the BBC where Pam Sly had ridden him out herself to make sure he was right after his fall in the Topham .
I was gutted to find out he had damaged a shoulder when stumbling at the fifth ,it wore me away for months afterwards ,i was a 33 year old man with a wife and three kids ,i should have had other things to worry about, it shouldn’t have mattered but it did.
Kennel Hill ,A real rogue but a lovable one ,think of your Duc de Balbec ,Pukka Major,Amrullah,Cardinal Red ,Levaramoss and Derring Rose and here was another one to throw money at in the vain hope of all hopes that one day they would put it in ,sadly missed .One more as i was thinking about as i was writing this post seeing Mrs Muck seemingly break down on both front legs was a sickener too a real favourite lost in battle.
I’ve waffled on somewhat but lets remember some old friends the ones that meant something to you.
I can`t remember being this upset at a horses death for a long time Griffins Bar was the last one that really got under my skin.
What a bloody shameHe had become my favourite horse ,very sad indeed .
Had 1st and 3rd so happy ,was worried about the ground but noted the times yesterday were slow so stuck with it.
Backed No Panic on sentimental grounds (still hoping Ballycassidy clears valentines everytime i watch the replay lol).
A real bonny looking horse tho` NP if a bit on the small side.My list is.
Palypso de creek
Ollie Magern
Beat the Boys
Cerium
Erics Charm
Royal Rosa (if he gets in)8/9 more withdrawals and Knowhere’s in I’d say 9 because Whinstone Boy is more likely to get chosen over Knowhere if it came down to a ballot.
I hope, for the benefit of all the runners Knowhere does not get in.
I thought there was once a rule to stop poor jumpers from running.
So STOP Knowhere from running!
He`s run in three nationals and never actually fallen .
Granted he was dodgy as a youngster but i see little problem with his jumping nowadays .
His fall at Cheltenham was a blip.March 26, 2010 at 22:00 in reply to: Grand National ,worst horse and one who boxed above itself #285805Big Brown Bear in 1987 ran a lot better than a 200-1 shot had the right to.
Ahhhh, Big Brown Bear – think my dad had his 50p each-way on him that year!
The gelding was part of that entire "brown bear" axis either owned or trained (in earlier instances both) by G B Barlow, wasn’t he? Big Brown Bear himself was a half-brother to former Edward Hanmer chase winner Golden Friend, I notice.
Barlow also owned Little Brown Bear (half-brother of Free Gift and Bally Conn) and Brown Teddy – the last-named of whom was still arseing about (runs: 11, wins: 0) in East Anglia Area point-to-points for Alex Embiricos until recently.
gc
yes and earlier than that Bears Paw and Bears Slipper .
Plus there is a pub in Frodsham called The Bear which i`m sure has something to do with the Barlows .
i soo want cheif dan george to get in
vf
I wouldn`t worry i think he will get in ,the irish national is on the monday before so some will elect to go for that and with the daft rule that you can`t re-appear in the national within 7 days means there will be in my guess around 20 withdrawals by the 48 hour dec stage.
I think I’m now going to back everything that NTD runs, be it non stayers
geriatrics [Hello Bud, Ollie] and, no word that’s printable
….in the words of the master, ‘if you throw enough s**t at a wall some of it will stick’. You wouldn’t hear PN say that, now….
There is something niggling me in the back of my head about Beat the Boys if he were to run in the national ,could just be a flea though i suppose
I don’t think there’s much thought anymore. Mon Mome has to go off favorite now.
I think you`re right peter his form this season is as good as it gets from a previous years national winner.
Wouldn`t be surprised to see him make it a second win.
Second, Third , Fourth Colours etc of owners that are indistinguishable from each other.
In last year’s King George we were told to look out for markings on the horses’ noses to tell the main two protagonists apart! Yesterday, we had a terrestrial race at the Cheltenham festival where not even the commentator, who’d probably swotted up for hours, could tell you if the jolly had made a mistake or a nigh identically garbed horse.
Do racing folk not understand the concept of the away kit? The idea is that it’s a completely different colour to make it easily distinguishable.
It would be handy to take on the french coloured sash idea.
Five live chit chat during the race ,does my nut.
Nice to see some old stagers in good form but less so that the field looks like it could be a kim muir field from a few years ago.
I can remember when the foxhunters was something different with horses you’d hardly heard of apart from the two televised finals at Stratford and the two foxhunters .
Must be me getting old .February 13, 2010 at 22:20 in reply to: Other than Red Rum, who was the best National Winner? #276411Yes i remeber her saying that too.
I reckon if the likes of Neale Doughty had been on that day he
d have stayed put and we
d have been looking at a different result.
The horse was cantering.Mcoy should have nursed the horse home today after the first mistake his aggresive riding afterwards did the horse no favours .
Denman is fragile mentally once a bad mistake has been made he goes to pieces ,needs a jockey who understands him.
Bring on Sam.February 13, 2010 at 22:10 in reply to: Other than Red Rum, who was the best National Winner? #276403One of the best national winners in my opinion was Last Suspect a real dog but who was close to top class .
Hywell Davies managed to stay on for once and gave him a great ride to get up.
Granted Mr Snugfit wasn`t much to write home about but LS always kept more back than he gave. -
