So very sad to see his name. A lovely, game little terrier of a horse. Dreadful shock.

So very sad to read this and unexpected too. Just a young horse and so promising.

Thank you Tonge I appreciate that. Don’t do social media so I miss stuff.

Maybe there’s something to be said for keeping a bit for yourself. Mattie ran his heart out.

I read the tribute and it’s well worth reading. Very sad for this horse – he was so young and although no champion, appeared to do his best, which is all anyone can ask.

It’s nice that the owner, part of a syndicate, seem to really care about him. His trainer also seemed to care very deeply.

The trainer, mentioned in the tribute, makes a comment regarding the circumstances of the horse’s being put to sleep which, if true, is absolutely shameful and makes me wonder about how horse deaths are recorded. And surely the public should know when a horse is killed racing? I’d certainly never have known if it wasn’t for this forum. Because the horse wasn’t put to sleep on the racecourse his death isn’t mentioned in the RP report of the race. Makes it look like his run just petered out.

At least he appears to have been much loved in his short life.

So very sad to see his name here. 13 years old and I’m sure would have had a lovely retirement. I’ve been watching him seemingly forever. A horse I’ll not forget.

I’m not technical enough to put a link on, but for anyone that’s interested, Nick Alexander has put a lovely tribute to the horse on his website.

This is the sort of event that’s just very upsetting. I know our stalls are very narrow and noisy and I wonder if the poor horse had had any stalls experience. I know some trainers spend time getting their young horses used to the stalls but I don’t know if they all do. I don’t know what happened in this particular incident, but I dread to think what was going through this young horses head. He was just a baby. It’s just heartbreaking.

The gamest of the game, the bravest, toughest most likeable little pony of a mare. Only 9 years old. I thought she’d be around forever. If ever a horse deserved a good retirement it was her. Heartbreaking. RIP little one.

There’s a piece about him in today’s RP supplement. Apparently it was a two man job getting him out of his field because he’d be off. They’d just got hold of him when he jumped the metal gates, somersaulted and broke his back. Just absolutely tragic.

How sad that is. She must have had no idea what was going on.

I always feel it’s truly awful when a very young horse dies, but when an old horse dies it’s terribly sad for a different reason. This old boy was 13 and has been denied his retirement. Another lovely horse and so sad he’s gone. Would like to know what happened though.

An admirable horse. Was never going to win one of the worlds great races, but the kind of horse that would be a pleasure to own. A very sad loss.

Tonge it’s like you’re the bad news angel at the minute, but you just beat me to this one and Wheneverwecan.

    Absolutely heartbreaking.

That’s awful news and so unexpected. I didn’t see the race, came in just as the commentator was saying they all thought it was bad news but, to everyone’s surprise, he’d got up ok. So this is very sad to see.

Thank you, both of you. It’s not the news I wanted obviously. I so hope he was loved. Don’t know if his owner sold him to the trainer or just passed him on to him, but so hope he was loved. As game as a horse can be.

Only 5 years old and a really horrible fall to see. It was immediately obvious that the worst had happened.

Terribly sad to see this happen to a horse I’ve watched for a long time. Looked like he hit the hurdle and his back leg went. I hope they got to him quickly.

What an awful shame. Just so unfair.
