Mine – in no particular order
1. Failure to do my homework properly
2. Falling for or being swayed by hype (unforgivable I know)
3. Too cautious when I know deep down the time for bravery is at handJanuary 8, 2015 at 10:31 #5007221/ Being too rigid in ideas
2/ Follow certain horses/jockeys for too long
3/ Not being brave enough when circumstances dictate to steam inJanuary 8, 2015 at 13:05 #5007391. Definitely don’t do enough study time. I think for the amount I put on, is it worth it? But then a horse wins and I think if I’d have thought that through I may have come to that conclusion. Cockney Sparrow in the Scottish CH springs to mind.
2. Being swayed by tipsters. Never been a really confident person in anything I have done and can change my mind on someone else’s comments. Boy is that annoying when your original pick wins. Should get lessons from TAPK
3. I’d back Ruby Walsh on a rocking horse
January 8, 2015 at 13:56 #5007451. Dropping the pole
2. Falling in
3. DrowningJanuary 8, 2015 at 16:16 #5007561. Betting on NH racing
2. Betting on A/W racing
3. Following a trainer blindly even though I know they are out of form
January 8, 2015 at 16:29 #5007571. Following a particular horse with your heart rather than head
January 8, 2015 at 16:35 #5007581. Dropping the pole
2. Falling in
3. Drowninggc
Adoptive father of two. The patron saint of lower-grade fare. A gently critical friend of point-to-pointing. Kindness is a political act.
January 8, 2015 at 16:35 #5007591. Listening to other people as opposed to following what I beleive
2. Following trainers
3. Backing Davy Russell
January 8, 2015 at 17:07 #5007661. Following a particular horse with your heart rather than head
2. Believing I’ve only got one downfall
3. See 2.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
January 8, 2015 at 17:16 #500768I think my three biggest errors are:-
1. Backing a horse you weren’t going to back initially because it’s become a price you now believe is value. e.g. switching from Road To Riches to Bobs Worth for the Lexus because the latter horse went out to 4/1
2. Promising not to touch a fancy, because not everything was quite right for a bet, and then backing it because of paranoia that it wins unbacked.
3. Betting in impossible handicaps with huge fields and getting stuffed by the draw, especially at odds that I know are rank value in the circumstances.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
January 8, 2015 at 20:02 #500784Yes not being able to count to 3 doesn’t help either
January 8, 2015 at 20:27 #500788A few related problems.
1) Having too little money on winners, and too much on the losers. THis is really about a lack of discipline. If you went through all my bets for the last months and went in with with straight even stakes bet, i would be up a tidy amount. In reality, im nicely down.
2)Streching myself. Its easy to make small money from betting but having achieved this I try to scale up with with disastrous consequences
3)Chasing losses/lack of patience.SHL
January 8, 2015 at 20:33 #5007901. Log into laptop (I tend to bet online)
2. Go to bookies website
3. Place bet!Stay Lucky folks!
January 8, 2015 at 23:05 #500820I could name 33….
1,Failing to buy a terraced house for £12k when
Dancing Brave
won the 86 Guineas, could have sold it for £60k 10 yr later.
2,Buying a Black Mercedes with TAPK plates on it whenImperial Commander
won the 2010 Gold cup and losing £27k when I sold it.
3,Buying a Tag Heure watch for £3k whenWorkforce
won the 2010 Derby and never wearing it.
There’s no question I’m just one of lifes losers.
Having said that the greatest achievement was winning the 2008 Grand national withComply or Die
and convincing my missus Sex and Champagne was the best way to celebrate,we spent all night drinking and 5 minutes having rumpy then 9 months later watching her give birth to my Gorgeous daughter who incidentally is 6yo tomorrow.
Who says horseracing is a Mugs game?….Its a life changer!January 8, 2015 at 23:43 #500829Changing my bloody mind! Like today for instance, all morning, I was dead certain that I was gonna put Buckwheat (2:10 at Catterick) and Toga Tiger (5:15 Wolves) in a £15 bet (2 x £5 singles & £5 double). Came the afternoon, I ditched Toga Tiger and backed Miniskirt instead OK, I didn’t lose but I should’ve been much better off. Happens too often and I’m getting cheesed off with myself!
January 9, 2015 at 00:08 #500833I think it is a really good question.
I am actually pretty happy with the way I bet nowadays but it has taken me a long time to get there.
A lot of races are too hard for me but I have worked out where I tend to do well and focus on that.
